It has been an incredible journey, since I started the process of getting Asha slum students into University. Asha has always encouraged parents to send their children to primary and secondary school, but more was needed to make a break-through for the slum communities, so my team and I began to counsel parents in the slums and their children, explaining the economic and social benefits of their children going to university to study for a Bachelor’s Degree. Parents struggled with the need for the immediate financial support their children could provide if they got jobs against the argument that in the long-term, university was the best option not just for the child, but also for the family. However, the whole process was very difficult. It was necessary to choose students from all those who showed academic promise; they had to be very bright as universities were raising their requirements for entry to 85% and more. The next obstacle was, what courses should they apply for? And the application process itself was lengthy and complicated. Then how were these students to be funded through their courses? All these issues were faced and overcome with hard work and perseverance! The first batch of 35 slum students to go to the university and vocational institutes was in the year 2008. They were definitely a small number, but amazing in all the circumstances. By the year 2018, we had sent 2,800 slum students! 99% of all the Asha university students are now in gainful employment. Over the years I have seen Diwakar from Kanak Durga slum community, who is from the first batch of Asha students to go to the university. He completed his Bachelor’s and then did a Diploma in Advertising and Marketing. To understand the marketing and sales better he also worked in the Open Hand Café of the American Embassy School. Thereafter, cleared Common Admission Test (CAT) securing a seat for Masters in Business Administration. Today he works with RAW Pressery, well-known for its healthy cold pressed juices. I have also seen Mahinder Shrivas from Ekta Vihar slum community go to university and get his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering; he then went to Melbourne University in Australia to study for his Master’s degree in Computer Science. He graduated last summer and is now living and working for an Australian Bank in Sydney. This is such an encouraging and incredible story, requiring enormously hard work on Mahinder’s part and also great courage: moving to another country to live and study, away from family, friends and familiar culture. A truly amazing achievement for us all. Another outstanding student is Shehzadi from Zakhira slum community, who has overcome many of the barriers experienced by slum students and the additional barriers faced by female slum students to complete her Graduation in Political Science. She is now pursuing a Masters in Political Science from Delhi University. Her university experience, along with three internships, has has changed the course of her life. She has excelled in every way! These are just three examples from the many that could be mentioned. The transformation that comes does not just affect the student, it has a ripple effect on their families and their friends, it changes perspectives and lifts horizons, so that people begin to believe that the impossible is possible! My vision is that every child should have the right to education, from primary school to university, no matter where they live, whether in the richest part of Delhi or in the poorest slums, and I intend to continue helping bright students from all the slums in Delhi to realise their dreams of going to university and doing well for themselves and their families. So, please read this Year Book and be amazed at what has been accomplished so far.
