Like the lost treasures, these amazing reefs lie just a few hundred yards off the shores of Martin, Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties where more than one-third of Florida’s 19 million residents live. Fishing, diving, and boating help attract millions of visitors to southeast Florida each year (30 million in 2008/2009). Reef-related expen- ditures generate $5.7 billion annually in income and sales, and support more than 61,000 local jobs. Such immense recreational activity, coupled with the pressures of coastal development, inland agriculture, and robust cruise and commercial shipping industries, threaten the very survival of our reefs. With your help, reefs will be protected from local stresses and future generations will be able to enjoy their beauty and economic benefits. Coral reefs are highly diverse and productive, yet surprisingly fragile, ecosystems. They are built by living creatures that require clean, clear seawater to settle, mature and reproduce. Reefs provide safe havens for spectacular forms of marine life. Unfortunately, reefs are vulnerable to impacts on scales ranging from local and regional to global. Global threats to reefs have increased along with expanding ART SEITZ human populations and industrialization. Now, warming seawater temperatures and changing ocean chemistry from carbon dioxide emitted by the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation are also starting to imperil corals. -

[1] Glen Canyon Dam has caused a fundamental change in the distribution of fine sediment storage in the 99-km reach of the Colorado River in Marble Canyon, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. The two major storage sites for fine sediment (i.e., sand and finer material) in this canyon river are lateral recirculation eddies and the main- channel bed. We use a combination of methods, including direct measurement of sediment storage change, measurements of sediment flux, and comparison of the grain size of sediment found in different storage sites relative to the supply and that in transport, in order to evaluate the change in both the volume and location of sediment storage. The analysis shows that the bed of the main channel was an important storage environment for fine sediment in the predam era. In years of large seasonal accumulation, approximately 50% of the fine sediment supplied to the reach from upstream sources was stored on the main-channel bed. In contrast, sediment budgets constructed for two short-duration, high experimental releases from Glen Canyon Dam indicate that approximately 90% of the sediment discharge from the reach during each release was derived from eddy storage, rather than from sandy deposits on the main-channel bed. -

Status of Pacific Island coral reef fisheries by Tim Adams1, Paul Dalzell1 and Richard Farman2 1. SPC Coastal Fisheries Programme 2. Service de la mer, Province Sud, Nouméa, New Caledonia (paper presented at 8th International Coral Reef Symposium, Panama, 1996) Abstract It is difficult to determine the status of fisheries on Pacific Islands coral reefs. The region is economically undeveloped, sparsely populated and its coral reefs are scattered over a vast area. Resultant constraints on monitoring and investigation mean that quantitative information is rare. The few available quantitative indicators are summarised here alongside opinions based on extensive practical experience. Most anecdotal reports about exploitation of Pacific Island marine life that reach the global press concern adverse aspects of fisheries and this, in context with the definite crises being experienced in other global fisheries, particularly southeast Asian reef-fisheries, has led to a general feeling of pessimism about the broad impact of fishing on Pacific Island reefs. However, the available evidence suggests that Pacific Island reef fisheries as a whole do not exert an excessive pressure on reefs and that (high) local protein nutritional demands can be sustained at least for the immediate future. However, it is urgent that this apparent overall sustainability be consolidated through state-recognised management arrangements; it is necessary that some specific overfishing problems be addressed; and it is particularly important that the adverse influence of terrestrial activities and run-off on the carrying capacity of coral reefs fisheries be mitigated. Introduction Fisheries on Pacific Island coral reefs, despite the increasing pace of outside influence, are still overwhelmingly subsistence fisheries. -

Under evaluation is a distinct coastal boulder bed (CBB) derived from banded rhyolite with boulders arrayed in a partial-ring configuration against one side of the headland on Ensenada Almeja (Clam Bay) north of Loreto. Preconditions related to the thickness of rhyolite flows and vertical fissures that intersect the flows at right angles along with the specific gravity of banded rhyolite delimit the size, shape and weight of boulders in the Almeja CBB. Mathematical formulae are applied to calculate the wave height generated by storm surge impacting the headland. The average weight of the 25 largest boulders from a transect nearest the bedrock source amounts to 1200 kg but only 30% of the sample is estimated to exceed a full metric ton in weight.
