By Saivarshini Rishi As we continue to fight our way through this pandemic, we see it changing many important aspects of our lives, such as holidays and events. I want you to close your eyes for a minute and take your mind to Black Friday shopping, a widespread tradition in the U.S. What is the first thing that comes to your mind? I’m not a mind-reader but I’m pretty sure you pictured some- thing like long lines of people outside of stores and people pushing each other to get an item on clearance. But one question that everyone has is, how will it look like this year? I mean, can we picture this sort of a scenario in our current situation? To begin with, many stores have started to introduce these sales earlier than before and have them available for a longer duration to prevent huge crowds of people rushing to get the clearance. Additionally, many stores are closing during the holidays to prevent huge rushes. Walmart, after almost four decades, declared in July that it would close its stores on Thanksgiving Day. Other stores, like Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Best Buy, also presented similar deci- sions. Because it’s near impossible to practice social dis- tancing when there are crowds of people gathered at stores, online shopping has turned into an alternative source of purchasing goods on sale. Home Depot for example has sales both online and in-store from No- vember 6th till December 2nd, keeping both options open and allowing shoppers to decide which is better over the other. Best Buy went even further and started advertising on October 29th itself. But for people who do decide to do the in-store shopping, they might not expect the usual crowds of people clustered together. Walmart for instance has issued various safety measures to be followed on Black Friday such as for shopping carts to be sanitized for each shopper, social distancing to be maintained, people to wear their masks, and to line up in a single-file fashion. So, if you do decide to do the in-store shopping, we urge you to follow proper safety precautions. If there is an option where you could buy something you are looking for online, it is advisable that you consider Black Friday this year as another Cyber Monday. 4 www.jmmswordandshield.com DECEMBER 2020 FIRST SEMESTER VIRTU- AL LEARNING RECAP By Saivarshini Rishi Can you believe that the end of first semester of vir- tual learning is just around the corner, given the fact that we don’t have school for 2-3 weeks with Thanksgiving and Winter break? Our experience has truly been unique. The arrival of virtual learning came with drastic chang- es with homework, grading, tests, learning, etc., where some of these changes were easy to accommodate to while others were somewhat on the harder side. The first major difficulty with our current learning environment is the fact that each class only gets two hours per week of synchronous learning. This makes a lot of our education being some form of self-learning. Although we are provided with a handful of resources to use, the time spent learning the material ourselves in addition to the time spent on homework and assignments is way too much and it is basically somewhere between 5-7 hours, depending on the number of classes one takes. The difficulty of the class also plays a huge factor into this DRAMA, DEBATE AND as for students in AP classes, it is way more difficult to learn this material by themselves as it is all college cur- FORENSICS STILL riculum. American Muslims Breaking Barriers IN POLITICS 2020 AMERICAN MUSLIMS BREAKING BARRIERS IN POLITICS 2020 1 Introduction Assalamualaikum, Peace be with you. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, Jetpac, a representation-driven organization that trains American Muslims who want to run for office, and MPower Change, the largest Muslim-led social and racial justice organization in the United States, have partnered to highlight and document a list of candidates who ran for office in 2020, including in primary elections. It is our intention that this report serves as a resource and inspiration for other Muslims and people of color to run for public office in the United States. American Muslims are running for office in higher numbers than ever before, and this trend is expected to continue to rise with the many historic firsts we have seen across the country since 2017. A record 168 candidates were on 2020 ballots across 28 states and Washington D.C., which is the highest number since Jetpac, CAIR, and MPower Change started mapping the electoral progress of politicians who identify as Muslim. The candidates who have been running since 2017, win or lose, have continued to build coalitions in their communities after their campaigns ended, which has resulted in more Muslims being engaged in issue-based organizing on the local level. Muslim representation is still often neglected by policymakers, but the increase of candidates and community organizers is increasingly forcing elected officials and the media to include our perspective in the narrative on healthcare, the economy, immigration, and every other issue impacting American life.

  • LEGISLATIVE RECAP COVID-19 EDITION 2 Hawai‘I Public Health Institute 2020 Legislative Recap 2020: from COVID-19 to SOCIAL JUSTICE
2020 LEGISLATIVE RECAP COVID-19 EDITION 2 Hawai‘i Public Health Institute 2020 Legislative Recap 2020: FROM COVID-19 TO SOCIAL JUSTICE The year 2020 ushered in a new decade, and with it came resolutions to create a better future. The 2020 legislative session was no exception. In January, the Senate, House, and governor unveiled an ambitious joint package to create an affordable and livable Hawai‘i. In an effort to help Hawai‘i residents struggling to make ends meet, the 2020 Cost of Living Initiative focused on four areas: increasing wages and tax credits for working families, creating long-term affordable housing solutions, improving aging school facilities, and providing early learning access to all 3- and 4- year-olds by 2030. The tone of the legislature quickly changed as the risk of COVID-19 in Hawai‘i grew imminent. Their attention shifted from passing legislation for working families to emergency response and protection of public health. The state instituted a Stay-at-Home order and a mandatory 14-day travel quarantine to prevent an outbreak that could overwhelm Hawaii’s healthcare system. This helped keep Hawaii’s case count low, but also caused massive economic damage to the state. Thousands were out of work and the state faced a projected $2.3B budget shortfall. Federal funds flowed into the state to help with recovery, but could not cover budget defecits. The COVID-19 pandemic also exacerbated the health disparities experienced by racial minorities and those living in poverty. The Black Lives Matter movement, fueled by the tragic deaths of several Black Americans, further highlighted inequities caused by racism.

1 Senate Journal First Regular Session of the Fifty-eighth Legislature of the State of Oklahoma First Legislative Day, Tuesday, January 5, 2021 COMMUNICATION November 23, 2020 The Honorable J. Kevin Stitt Governor, State of Oklahoma 2300 N. Lincoln Boulevard Oklahoma City, OK 73105 Dear Governor Stitt, Over the last six years, it has been my sincere honor to serve and represent the constituents of Senate District 22. I have done my best to be a voice for voters in Piedmont, Yukon, NW Oklahoma City and Edmond, and they believed in me enough to elect me twice to this senate seat. I’m pleased to have been a part of so many positive changes during my tenure. In 2016, voters passed State Question 792, supporting alcohol modernization which opened the door for new businesses and opportunities across Oklahoma, resulting in nearly 5,000 new jobs. With the passage of State Question 788 and the successful enactment of HB 1269, of which I was the Senate author, Oklahoma is working to reduce our mass incarceration rates and the related fiscal and social costs that go with it. I’d be remiss if I did not mention supporting the largest increase in public education funding in the history of our state in 2018 totaling almost half a billion dollars, and the subsequent passage of an additional $120M in 2019 which you championed. But more important than these, are the families who have been impacted by legislation I carried. Two bills in particular, one which standardized investigations following the sudden, unexplained death of infants in Oklahoma, and the second which delayed the release of autopsy reports to the media so next of kin would be given time to process the information contained in the reports, are some of my proudest moments of service.

  • In Response to the Confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, a Coalition of Elected Officials in New York City Released the Following Statement
In response to the confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, a coalition of elected officials in New York City released the following statement: “Ostensibly, the role of the Supreme Court is not to make policy, or to implement a political agenda. It’s to determine whether or not the policies and the political agendas enacted by other branches of government are consistent with the Constitution and the laws of the United States. But this narrative simply isn’t true. The Supreme Court has always been a political institution. The Republican Party recognizes this reality and uses aggressive tactics to stack the courts with right-wing ideologues, cultivated in their own parallel legal ecosystem. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has fought to preserve the myth of our apolitical judiciary, unilaterally disarming in the battles that decide which judges are confirmed to the federal bench. This asymmetry is exacerbated by our dysfunctional electoral system. Hundreds of federal judges - including a majority on the Supreme Court - have now been appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote. The result has been catastrophic. A right-wing supermajority now sits on the Supreme Court. The federal judiciary is teeming with hundreds of conservative fanatics appointed by Donald Trump. They are poised to destroy what little remains of abortion access, labor rights, civil rights protections, and social insurance. Not only do these extremist judges threaten more than a century of progressive achievements, they threaten to foreclose the possibility of any future progress under a Democratic administration. Already, the Roberts court has gutted the most progressive elements of the Affordable Care Act, denying Medicaid coverage to millions of poor Americans.

The COVID-19 disease first appeared in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Since then, the World Health Organization has deemed it a pandemic. These kinds of viruses mainly affect animals, but this particular strand, SARS-CoV-2, has spread from animals to humans.
