Of the nearly 65 resi- dents at Allied Churches, 15- 20 have found some type of employment. In addition to Diversco, some of these em- ployers include K&W Caf- eteria, Wal-Mart, area farms and landscaping companies. “We do try to connect peo- ple at the shelter,” said Hunter Thompson, executive director of Allied Churches. Bone admitted that the path leading to where she is now was not easy, but she and Richmond agree that to make a change, people just need to “make the irst step.” No stranger to hardships in his life, Richmond recalled being kicked out by his par- ents when he was only 16 years old. With nowhere to go, he was forced to sleep on a park benchl. “My parents physically turned their back on me,” Richmond said. After becoming a member of Miracle Temple Church in Burlington, Richmond said that his life made a turn for the better. The church opened his mind and gave him a compassion that he had not known before. “Once your heart gets warm, your mind does, too,” he said. Now, Richmond insists on giving others a second chance, like he had been giv- en when Diversco promoted him to a management posi- tion. He said that he is appre- ciative of the potential others saw in him and wants nothing more than to provide others with the same opportunities. Dr. Bassiri & Associates, PA “I am fortunate enough for (the company) to share it with me, so I wanted to share with others,” Richmond said. Despite any struggles that may come along the way, Richmond believes in the good that can come from giv- ing others a second chance and does not see an end to his methods anytime soon. He admits that some em- ployees may not possess the same determination as Bone, but he hopes to ind the people out there who are just looking for that second chance. “I am going to continue this program,” Richmond said. “I am not going to give up.”
