  • List of Horse Breeds 1 List of Horse Breeds
List of horse breeds 1 List of horse breeds This page is a list of horse and pony breeds, and also includes terms used to describe types of horse that are not breeds but are commonly mistaken for breeds. While there is no scientifically accepted definition of the term "breed,"[1] a breed is defined generally as having distinct true-breeding characteristics over a number of generations; its members may be called "purebred". In most cases, bloodlines of horse breeds are recorded with a breed registry. However, in horses, the concept is somewhat flexible, as open stud books are created for developing horse breeds that are not yet fully true-breeding. Registries also are considered the authority as to whether a given breed is listed as Light or saddle horse breeds a "horse" or a "pony". There are also a number of "color breed", sport horse, and gaited horse registries for horses with various phenotypes or other traits, which admit any animal fitting a given set of physical characteristics, even if there is little or no evidence of the trait being a true-breeding characteristic. Other recording entities or specialty organizations may recognize horses from multiple breeds, thus, for the purposes of this article, such animals are classified as a "type" rather than a "breed". The breeds and types listed here are those that already have a Wikipedia article. For a more extensive list, see the List of all horse breeds in DAD-IS. Heavy or draft horse breeds For additional information, see horse breed, horse breeding and the individual articles listed below.

  • Rare Breeds Highlight Western States Horse Expo
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For more information contact Kate Riordan, [email protected] Rare Breeds Highlight Western States Horse Expo The 21st Western States Horse Expo, May 9-12, 2019, will feature a variety of rare breeds, along with “Stewardship Awards of North America” (SANA) classes specifically for these breeds. The host organizations, the Akhal-Teke Association of America and the Equus Survival Trust, focus on conservation through education. Horse Expo has always made a concerted effort to educate its attendees, whether through veterinary science, breeding, alternative modalities, training, camping or riding. To have SANA and the host groups parallel the Expo’s mission statement of education, plus showcase these horses in sanctioned classes at the Expo, is an exceptional opportunity. Where else can you visit with and watch these rare and endangered horses perform? And of course the exhibitors and breeders will gladly tell you about the unique characteristics of each breed including the traditional type, movement and temperament that these horses have displayed for centuries. This year the Horse Expo will be housed at Murieta Equestrian Center, the largest equestrian center in California. The expanded number of arenas allows the endangered breed classes to include Jumping, Dressage, Obstacle, Western Dressage, In-hand, Ridden, Costume and classes specifically for Akhal-Tekes. The Akhal-Teke horse is believed to be one of the oldest surviving and purest of horse breeds. The Akhal-Teke is a descendant of the ancient Turkmene horse that originated from Asia and was used by nomadic tribes as a war horse. Later the Turkmene horse was brought to Russia and the best breeding stock were taken to the first Akhal-Teke Stud, Zakaspiisky, near Ashkhabad where the breed was developed and used by the Russian Military.

  • Light Horse – Draft Horse – Warmblood Information Sheet
Light Horse – Draft Horse – Warmblood Information Sheet From infoplease.com: A light horse is any breed of horse that is used primarily for riding or for light work such as pulling buggies. Light horses have their origin in the Middle East and North Africa. All modern breeds of light horse trace their origins to the Arabian horse, usually through the Thoroughbred. Light horses are classified according to training, e.g., racers, trotters, riding horses, and cow horses From Wikipedia: A draft horse, draught horse or dray horse (from the Anglo- Saxon dragan meaning to draw or haul) is a large horse bred for hard, heavy tasks such as ploughing and farm labor. There are a number of different breeds, with varying characteristics but all share common traits of strength, patience and a docile temperament which made them indispensable to generations of pre-industrial farmers. Draft horses and draft crossbreds are versatile breeds used today for a multitude of purposes, including farming, show, and other recreational uses. They are also commonly used for crossbreeding, especially to light riding breeds such as the Thoroughbred. While most draft horses are used for driving, they can be ridden and some of the lighter draft breeds are capable performers under saddle. A number of horse breeds are used as draft horses, with the popularity of a given breed often closely linked to geographic location. Examples include: Page 1 of 7 American Cream Ardennes Belgian Boulonnais Breton Clydesdale Dole Gudbrandsdal Irish Draught Percheron Shire Suffolk Punch Gypsy Vanner horse Warmbloods are a group of middle-weight horse types and breeds, primarily originating in Europe, registered with organizations that are characterized by open studbook policy, studbook selection, and the aim of breeding for equestrian sport.

  • A Microsatellite Analysis of Five Colonial Spanish Horse Populations
doi:10.1111/j.1365-2052.2011.02210.x A microsatellite analysis of five Colonial Spanish horse populations of the southeastern United States E. K. Conant, R. Juras and E. G. Cothran Department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX 77843-4458, USA Summary The domestic horse (Equus caballus) was re-introduced to the Americas by Spanish explorers. Although horses from other parts of Europe were subsequently introduced, some New World populations maintain characteristics ascribed to their Spanish heritage. The southeastern United States has a history of Spanish invasion and settlement, and this influence on local feral horse populations includes two feral-recaptured breeds: the Florida Cracker and the Marsh Tacky, both of which are classified as Colonial Spanish horses. The feral Banker horses found on islands off the coast of North Carolina, which include, among others, the Shackleford Banks, the Corolla and the Ocracoke, are also Colonial Spanish horses. Herein we analyse 15 microsatellite loci from 532 feral and 2583 domestic horses in order to compare the genetic variation of these five Colonial Spanish Horse populations to 40 modern horse breeds. We find that the Corolla horse has very low heterozygosity and that both the Corolla and Ocracoke populations have a low mean number of alleles. We also find that the Florida Cracker population has a heterozygosity deficit. In addition, we find evidence of similarity of the Shackleford Banks, Marsh Tacky and Florida Cracker popula- tions to New World Iberian horse breeds, while the origins of the other two populations are less clear. Keywords feral horse, genetic distance, microsatellite, phylogeny.

Assessing Color and Breed In model horse competitions, the goal is to faithfully recreate the equestrian world in miniature. It is what exhibitors strive to do and what judges consider when evaluating a table of entries. One aspect of that evaluation is whether the color of the model is realistic. In order to assess this, a judge must be able to distinguish between visually similar (but often geneti- cally distinct) colors and patterns and determine whether or not the color depicted on the model is suitable for the breed the entrant has assigned. This task is complicated by the fact that many participants—who are at heart collectors as well as competitors—are attracted to pieces that are unique or unusual. So how does a judge determine which colors are legitimate for a particular breed and which are questionable or outright unrealistic? When it comes to the range of colors within each breed, there are three basic considerations. Breeds are limited by the genes present in the population (what is possible), by any restrictions placed by their registry (what is permissible), and by what is counted as a fault in breed competitions (what is penalized).

  • Spring Newsletter-June 2019
SPRING NEWSLETTER-JUNE 2019 WOODSMEN INVADE THE BEREA FOREST BY BEN BURGESS Eleven Suffolk Punch horses and seven good mules descended on Berea, Kentucky, during the week of Octo- ber 28 - November 3, 2018, for yet another terrific Biological Woodsmen’s Week. For those who may not know what this means, Biological Woodsmen’s Week is an annual gathering of proven practitioners of restorative forestry, along with a few invited guests. Most of the practitioners have completed an apprenticeship through the Healing Harvest Forest Foundation, and all are dedicated to the practice of doing the best work possible in the woods while using draft animals to extract the logs. This year’s gathering was hosted by Berea College, who has a real interest in this method of managing for- ests, since they own a large acreage that is of great importance to them to manage properly. One of the school’s eight great commitments is about “supportive and sustainable living”, which fits in very well with the practice of restorative forestry. The college forester, Clint Patterson, along with Wendy Warren, director of the Forestry Outreach Center, worked diligently to put this event together in order to demonstrate just how viable an option an animal-based extraction system can be to meet the objectives of the school. The week was broken down into two phases. Monday through Friday was about harvesting timber safely and effectively, while protecting the residual stand. Saturday was a day for public demonstration and education. The leaves were in full color and as the temperature and weather held steady, our timber cutters hit the woods on Monday morning.
