Catley and David Tipling China has come a long way since 1958 when 'Sparrows [probably meaning any passerine], rats, bugs and flies' were proscribed as pests and a war declared on them. The extermination of a reputed 800,000 birds over three days in Beijing alone was apparently then followed by a plague of insects (Boswall 1986). After years of isolation and intellectual stagnation during the Cultural Revolution, China opened its doors to organised foreign tour groups in the late 1970s and to individual travellers from 1979 onwards. Whilst these initial 'pion eering' travellers included only a handful of birdwatchers, news of the country's ornithological riches soon spread and others were quick to follow. With a national avifauna in excess of 1,200 species, the People's Republic offers vast scope for study. Many of the species are endemic or nearly so, a majority are poorly known and a few possess an almost mythical draw for European birders. Sadly, all too many of the endemic forms are either rare or endangered. Initially, most of the recent visits by birders were via Hong Kong, and concentrated on China's mountainous southern and western regions. Inevitably, however, attention has shifted towards the coastal migration sites. Migration at one such, Beidaihe in Hebei Province, in Northeast China, had been studied and documented by a Danish scientist during the Second World War (Hemmingsen 1951; Hemmingsen & Guildal 1968). We’ve added a significant number of new titles to the list and 2009 promises to be a bumper year. It’s wonderful to have two classic references available in paperback for the first time ever—Macdonald’s Princeton Encyclopedia of Mammals and Perrins’ Princeton Encyclopedia of Birds. These are outstanding books that belong on every naturalist’s shelf. A new Lars Jonsson book is always cause for celebration, and in Lars Jonsson’s Birds we have a mouthwatering collection of much of the master’s recent work, once again confirming him as the doyen of wildlife artists. Jeremy Mynott’s Birdscapes is an intriguing and elegant study of man’s enduring interrelationship with birds, at once insightful, amusing, and informative. We have also just published three new titles in our Princeton Field Guides series, and particular attention should be given to Mark Brazil’s magnificent Birds of East Asia, which covers Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and the eastern Asian seaboard, an area lacking a unifying guide until now, and to Dennis Paulson’s Dragonflies and Damselflies of the West, a richly illustrated, authoritative photographic guide, soon to be followed by a volume on the East. -

BORNEO: Bristleheads, Broadbills, Barbets, Bulbuls, Bee-eaters, Babblers, and a whole lot more A Tropical Birding Set Departure July 1-16, 2018 Guide: Ken Behrens All photos by Ken Behrens TOUR SUMMARY Borneo lies in one of the biologically richest areas on Earth – the Asian equivalent of Costa Rica or Ecuador. It holds many widespread Asian birds, plus a diverse set of birds that are restricted to the Sunda region (southern Thailand, peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Java, and Borneo), and dozens of its own endemic birds and mammals. For family listing birders, the Bornean Bristlehead, which makes up its own family, and is endemic to the island, is the top target. For most other visitors, Orangutan, the only great ape found in Asia, is the creature that they most want to see. But those two species just hint at the wonders held by this mysterious island, which is rich in bulbuls, babblers, treeshrews, squirrels, kingfishers, hornbills, pittas, and much more. Although there has been rampant environmental destruction on Borneo, mainly due to the creation of oil palm plantations, there are still extensive forested areas left, and the Malaysian state of Sabah, at the northern end of the island, seems to be trying hard to preserve its biological heritage. Ecotourism is a big part of this conservation effort, and Sabah has developed an excellent tourist infrastructure, with comfortable lodges, efficient transport companies, many protected areas, and decent roads and airports. So with good infrastructure, and remarkable biological diversity, including many marquee species like Orangutan, several pittas and a whole Borneo: Bristleheads and Broadbills July 1-16, 2018 range of hornbills, Sabah stands out as one of the most attractive destinations on Earth for a travelling birder or naturalist. -

THE Sumatran Tiger - one of the most incredible and unlikely sightings ever on a Birdquest tour! (Pete Morris) SUMATRA 6 – 21/26/30 JUNE 2014 LEADER: PETE MORRIS It’s not often that I begin a birding tour report with a mammal, but our incredible sighting of Sumatran Tiger I’m afraid stole the show from the birds this time around! It’s rarely seen let alone photographed at point blank range and watched for 20 minutes, so we can certainly class ourselves as part of a very select club! Fortu- nately the birds did us proud too! It had been a few years since I’d led this tour, and I’d almost forgotten how challenging the birding can be! Fortunately, I hadn’t forgotten that if you work hard and keep plugging away, success ultimately comes your way, and I was lucky to have a team of stalwarts that were prepared to, at times, put in the hard yards to gain the rewards! And in the end, we were extremely successful in tracking down nearly 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Sumatra www.birdquest-tours.com Nightbirds were a theme of the tour, and Reddish Scops Owl an endearing example! (Pete Morris) all of our hoped for targets. The main tour focused on three areas. At the imposing Gunung Kerinci we tracked down a great selection of specialities, including Red-billed Partridge, the rare Javan Woodcock (in daylight), Sumatran Trogon, a confiding Schneider’s Pitta, fabulous Sumatran and Rusty-breasted Wren-Babblers, Sun- da Forktail (nearby), Brown-winged and Shiny Whistling Thrushes and even a brief Sumatran Cochoa. -

A total of 803 bird individuals representing 86 bird species and 29 families (i.e. 37.90% from recently logged forest and 62.10% from thirty year post-harvested forest) were captured from October 2010 to September, 2012. Twenty one bird species were commonly captured from both types of forests, 37 bird species were caught Publication Info only in thirty year post-harvested forest and 28 bird species were caught only from recently logged forest. Arachnothera longirostra – Little Spiderhunter, Malacopteron magnum – Rufous-crowned Babbler, Paper received: Alophoixus phaeocephalus – Yellow-bellied Bulbul and Meiglyptes tukki – Buff-necked Woodpecker were 24 June 2013 the most abundant four bird species in the thirty year post-harvested forest. Avian community structures in two artificial wetland habitats i.e., man-made marsh and lake were investigated to identify the suitability of the habitats for avian species, habitat preference and food resources. Distance sampling point count method detected 35272 bird individuals of 98 species from July to November 2010. Ninty four bird species were recorded from man-made marsh and thirty one species from the lake area. Acridotheres tristis (6.34% of all detections) was the most dominant bird species of man-made marsh and Passer montanus (0.41%) was the most dominant bird species of lake habitat. On the contrarily, Microhierax fringillarius and Turdoides earlei (each 0.01%) were the rarest species of man-made marsh and Dinopium javanense (0.02%) was the rarest species of the lake habitat. The bird relative abundance of man-made marsh and lake habitats was significantly different (F 1,194 = 50.3, p<0.05). -

The impressively marked bird had been collected on the Marquesas Islands – a remote spot of the Pacific Ocean that would become part of French Polynesia. The members of the Society present at that meeting would have undoubtedly been impressed by yet another of the rare, exotic gems that Gould had a habit of pulling out of his seemingly bottomless hat. Next up in this Victorian frontiers-of-ornithology ‘show and tell’ was Hugh Edwin Strickland (1811-53). The birds he spoke about2 were quite a bit closer to home, although many were every bit as exotic as Gould’s Polynesian parrot. Strickland, instead of sourcing his specimens from the far corners of the Earth, had simply popped across London to Hyde Park Corner with his note book. There, causing quite a stir, was an exhibition of "Ten Thousand Chinese Things", displayed in a purpose-built “summer house” whose design was, according to The Illustrated London News3, “usual in the gardens of the wealthy, in the southern provinces of China”. -
Assessing the Potential for Avifauna Recovery in Degraded Forests in Indonesia

Continuing disappearance and degradation of primary tropical rainforests in Indonesia, and the ongoing conversion of degraded forest to monoculture plantations, threaten many bird species with local extinction. Yet, information on bird populations from the Sundaic region, which covers western Indonesia, is generally lacking, limiting our understanding of species responses to disturbance, extinction risks, and potential ways to counteract local species extinction processes. On the Indonesian island of Sumatra, bird density information is only known from two studies (on four hornbill species and one pheasant species). Here, we compare bird densities between less degraded and highly degraded forests within the Harapan Rainforest Ecosystem Restoration Concession in Sumatra. From a total of 148 bird species recorded, densities were calculated for 47 species with the highest encounter rate, 33 of which were recorded in forests of both disturbance levels, allowing comparisons to be made. We found five species with higher densities in the highly degraded forest and seven species with higher densities in the less degraded forest. While our species-specific results were generally consistent with previous biological insights, there were exceptions, such as a species previously considered to be sensitive to habitat degradation, the sooty- capped babbler Malacopteron affine, being more abundant in the highly degraded forest. Our study revealed that despite its condition, degraded forest retains much value for Sumatran lowland forest birds, providing a compelling argument for securing its important conservation status under improved management, rather than assigning it for clearance as typically happens. -

The magnificent Reeves's Pheasant was one of the many specialties seen on this tour (Brendan Ryan). EASTERN CHINA 3 – 27 MAY 2017 LEADER: HANNU JÄNNES Birdquest’s Eastern China tour, an epic 25 day journey across much of eastern China, focusses on an array of rare Chinese endemics and migrants, and this year’s tour once again proved a great success. The focus of the first part of the tour is to achieve good views of rarities like Spoon-billed Sandpiper, the critically endangered Blue-crowned (Courtois’s) Laughingthrush, the superb Cabot’s Tragopan and Elliot’s Pheasant and the ultra-rare Chinese Crested Tern. This was successfully achieved alongside a plethora of other much sought after species including White-faced Plover, Great Knot, stunning Saunders’s Gulls, Reed Parrotbill, eastern migrants, including Pechora Pipit, Japanese Robin, Japanese Paradise, Yellow-rumped, Narcissus and Mugimaki Flycatchers, and forest species like Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher, White-necklaced Partridge, Silver Pheasant, Buffy and Moustached Laughingthrushes, Short-tailed Parrotbill, Fork-tailed Sunbird and the delightful Pied Falconet. The second part of the tour, the ‘Northeast Extension’, visited a series of sites for various other Chinese specialities. Beginning in Wuhan, we bagged the amazing Reeves’s Pheasant and Crested Ibis, as well as stunners that included Fairy Pitta and Chestnut-winged Cuckoo. We then moved on to Jiaocheng for the fabulous Brown Eared Pheasants before flying on to Beijing, where the mountains of the nearby Hebei province yielded the endemic Chinese Beautiful Rosefinch, Chinese Nuthatch, Green-backed and Zappey’s Flycatchers and the rare Grey-sided Thrush.
