Phil has written for theatre companies, dance groups, and symphonies around the world and received commissions from Mark Fewer, CBC Vancouver Orchestra, Art of Time Ensemble, and Duke Trio. In 2001 Dwyer won the prestigious KM Hunter Award for Land of Sleepless Dreams, a composition he wrote for Amici Chamber Ensemble. That year, he was also featured soloist with Latvia’s Liepaja Symphony. Dwyer was commissioned by CBC Radio Drama to write original music and serve as musical director for A Night at the Quinte Hotel, an evening of Al Purdy’s poetry starring Gordon Pinsent. In 2008 Phil was recognized at the National Jazz Awards with awards for Saxophonist and Arranger Of The Year. John is currently a member of Kenny Wheeler’s quartet and large ensemble and performs in duo and quartet settings with John Surman – their recording of ‘Ambleside Days’ on album won critical acclaim. John celebrated his 60th birthday year in 2002 with a Contemporary Music Network Tour in which he presented his new trio with the drummer Joey Baron and Marc Johnson on bass. The tour also featured the Creative Jazz Orchestra playing John's composition 'The Green Man Suite'. In July 2002 John received the BBC Jazz Award for 'Best New Work' for this suite. In 2004 John recorded 'Where do we go from Here?' in duo with Kenny Wheeler and 'Nightfall' with bassist Charlie Haden. They subsequently performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Also that year John formed a new trio with Palle Danielsson and Martin France. They performed at the Vancouver Festival and recorded 'Angel of the Presence' for CAM Jazz. This recording was released in January 2006 to coincide with their UK tour and has received critical acclaim. John has been professor of Jazz Piano at the Cologne College of Music since 1993 and became a Lecturer in jazz at York University in 2005. For 45 years, he has been a major force, producing a prodigious and creative body of work that expands beyond jazz. Surman’s extensive discography as a leader and a side man numbers more than 100 recordings to date. Surman has worked with dozens of prominent artists worldwide, including John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, Chris McGregor’s Brotherhood of Breath, Dave Holland, Miroslav Vitous, Jack DeJohnette, Terje Rypdal, Weather Report, Karin Krog, Bill Frisell, Paul Motian and many more. Surman is probably most popularly known for his longstanding association with the German label ECM, who began releasing Surman’s recordings in 1979. Surman has won numerous jazz polls and awards and a number of important commissions. Every period of his career is filled with highlights, which is why Cuneiform is exceedingly proud to release for the first time ever this amazing document of the late 60s 'Brit-jazz' scene. Born in Tavistock, in England, Surman discovered music as a child, singing as soprano soloist in a Plymouth-area choir. He later bought a second- hand clarinet, took lessons from a Royal Marine Band clarinetist, and began playing traditional Dixieland jazz at local jazz clubs.

We continue to fulfill our mission with the help of dedicated faculty, energetic administrators, committed staff, generous benefactors and concerned citizens. I am pleased to share some of our recent highlights: On Jan. 26, I will attend the faculty council meeting for the Faculty of Nursing. I attended the faculty council meeting for the Faculty of Engineering on Nov. 27; the faculty council meeting for the Faculty of Law on Oct. 31, and the faculty council meeting for the Faculty of Business Administration on Oct. 3. I will continue to attend as many faculty council meetings on both campuses as I can. These meetings are an opportunity for me to learn more about the faculties, including their accomplishments and their needs plans for the future, directly from members of faculty. Hind Masri, a second-year law student, recently left Fredericton for a four-month internship at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hauge, Netherlands. Ms. Masri will be working in the Appeals Division of the ICC, which is the first permanent, treaty-based, international criminal court established to help end impunity for the perpetrators of the most serious crimes of concern to the international community. Dean Levitt organized the internship for Ms. Masri and has made the development of new experiential learning opportunities for our law students a priority.

  • B.C. Jazz Legend Performing with Ensemble Vivant Group by Mary Cocivera
B.C. jazz legend performing with Ensemble Vivant group by Mary Cocivera Ensemble Vivant, a group of five musicians, will take the stage at the Kelowna Community Theatre Thursday to weave some musical magic, ranging from Bach to Piazzolla. Known for its wide-ranging genre diversity, the Toronto-based ensemble will feature music with a distinctly Latin flavour. Jazz musician Don Thompson returns to his native British Columbia for this Kelowna gig. Born and raised in Powell River, he started his 50 year musical career with piano lessons, but started jamming with jazz musicians in his teens and moved to Vancouver in the early 1960s to play bass in Lloyd Arntzen's Dixieland quartet. When the neck broke off his borrowed bass, he bought his own bass and became one of the go-to bassists for countless studio sessions in Vancouver. He taught himself to play vibraphone and was the only vibes player in all of Vancouver at the time. Thompson moved to California in the late 1960s, to play and tour with saxophonist John Handy. As a pianist, bassist, percussionist, composer, arranger and producer, he is described as a musician who can move flawlessly from vibes to bass to piano and sound virtuosic on each instrument. Thompson played in Jim Hall's trio, George Shearing's band and has collaborated with Moe Koffman, Ed Bickert, Rob McConnell, Lenny Breau, Sarah Vaughan, Kenny Wheeler, Art Farmer, Phil Dwyer and many others. He has performed in Europe, Japan, Great Britain, South America and at every major jazz festival in North America.

  • The Compositional Language of Kenny Wheeler
THE COMPOSITIONAL LANGUAGE OF KENNY WHEELER by Paul Rushka Schulich School of Music McGill University, Montreal March 2014 A paper submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of D.Mus. Performance Studies ©Paul Rushka 2014 2 ABSTRACT The roots of jazz composition are found in the canon ofthe Great American Songbook, which constitutes the majority of standard jazz repertoire and set the compositional models for jazz. Beginning in the 1960s, leading composers including Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock began stretching the boundaries set by this standard repertoire, with the goal of introducing new compositional elements in order to expand that model. Trumpeter, composer, and arranger Kenny Wheeler has been at the forefront of European jazz music since the late 1960s and his works exemplify a contemporary approach to jazz composition. This paper investigates six pieces from Wheeler's songbook and identifies the compositional elements of his language and how he has developed an original voice through the use and adaptation of these elements. In order to identify these traits, I analyzed the melodic, harmonic, structural and textural aspects of these works by studying both the scores and recordings. Each of the pieces I analyzed demonstrates qualities consistent with Wheeler's compositional style, such as the expansion oftonality through the use of mode mixture, non-functional harmonic progressions, melodic composition through intervallic sequence, use of metric changes within a song form, and structural variation. Finally, the demands of Wheeler's music on the performer are examined. 3 Resume La composition jazz est enracinee dans le Grand repertoire American de la chanson, ou "Great American Songbook", qui constitue la plus grande partie du repertoire standard de jazz, et en a defini les principes compositionnels.

Robert G. Doyle July 3, 1932 - November 24, 2014 rom humble beginnings amidst the depression era and the war rationed 40’s, Bobby Doyle began playing the piano as a 10-year-old youngster growing up in New FWestminster, B.C. He was introduced to the rudiments with sporadic lessons from an elderly teacher who lived in the neighborhood, but he wasn’t too keen on classical piano. Being interested in popular music, he spent hours practicing on his own during his teenage years while friends played outside, or as he put it, “doing something girls mostly did”. Immersing himself in music, he soon began working locally, “plunking away in cowboy bands” at age 15. At age 16 he made his radio debut on CKNW with Mike, Mark & Jack, The Rhythm Pals, appearing on the popular Bill Rea show. These early experiences spawned a 60 plus year career as a prominent Vancouver musician and private teacher. In the 50’s he moved to Vancouver and began working at The Flame and The Vancouver Lawn & Tennis Club. Throughout the 60’s and into the 70’s he was a house band member in three of Vancouver’s most prominent supper clubs starting at Izzy’s, often at The Cave and ending at Oil Can Harry’s. This coincided with a musical association lasting over 40 years alongside He was always Vancouver’s iconic Bobby Hales. These clubs played host to myriad well-known entertainers engaged and and music performers. It was a fruitful era for live music in the city and the opportunity to play alongside and/or accompany the stars of the day, including Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, listening to what Stan Getz, Buddy Rich, Mitzi Gaynor, Robert Goulet, Sherry Lewis, Jack Carter, Red Buttons, a was going on…he young up and coming Stevie Wonder, Chubby Checker and countless more.
