Executive councillors are equivalent to ministers at the federal level. Each state is allowed to nominate between six and 10 executive councillors and this is specified in the state constitution. They are given specific portfolios and the number may vary from councillor to councillor. The ones responsible for finance, local government, environment, foreign investments and sports (not necessarily in that order) have a heavy burden to shoulder considering the significance of these portfolios. Under the so called Perak Amanjaya Development Plan, some of the things that we have tried to do are the same things that I believe many others here are concerned about: first, balanced development and economic distribution between the urban and rural areas by focusing on developing small towns; second, poverty eradication regardless of race or religion so that no one remains on the fringes of society or is left behind economically; and, third, youth empowerment. Under the first one, the state identifies viable small- and medium-size companies which can operate from small towns. These companies are to be working closely with the state government to boost the economy of the respective areas.
