Do you enjoy singing in four-part harmony? When you go to musical theater do you wish that you were up on the stage rather than in the audience? The Old Mill Singers is getting ready for our spring concert series that will be performed at Ossining High School in June. Our theme this spring is “Hits from Billboard to Broadway.” We are an amateur chorus of men and women singing a mixed repertoire of classical and popular tunes. The Old Mill Singers was founded in 1970 as the Phelps Arts Society to provide music for hospital patients during the holiday season, and, over forty years later, it continues to perform in nursing homes, at Rosary Hill, at community events, and in public concerts twice a year. We welcome all interested singers – sopranos, altos, tenors and basses – and will be accepting new members through February. Formal auditions are not required, only the ability to sing in tune in a group. We rehearse at St. Paul's on The Hill (40 Ganung Drive) in Ossining on Tuesday evenings, starting at 7:30 P.M. Our spring rehearsals will continue every Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM through May. Visit us at www.oldmillsingers.org or call and leave a message at 917-318-8941. (Please mention the Old Mill Singers.)

BEEKEEPING 101 WORKSHOP -March 21st, at the Yorktown Grange, $10 suggested donation. This workshop will cover some key aspects of bee biology and behavior and introduce you to ‘natural’ beekeeping methods. You will learn a brief history of beekeeping, the basic equipment needed, site selection, and where to obtain honeybees and equipment. You will learn a more sustainable, holistic approach on how the colony works as an organism, interacts with the environment, plants, flowers, and with us. We will demonstrate how to assemble the wooden boxes and frames, as well as share tips on how to plant a garden that attracts honeybees and other pollinators. You will go home with a potted/seeded container to start your own pollinator garden. Even if you do not want to be a beekeeper, come and learn how to appreciate them, as well as how to go pesticide free for pollinators and improve the environment with beneficial forage plantings.

Taconic Opera: La Traviata like you’ve never experienced it before! After its success in 2013 with a Lucia di Lammermoor sing-a-long and a sold-out crowd, Taconic Opera returns to White Plains with Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata in the same format. Because the concept was so popular last year, it had to be moved to a larger venue, The Play Group Stage, 1 North Broadway, White Plains, NY for a single performance on March 22, 2015 at 2:30 pm. It is an experience not to be missed at an affordable price, and in the convenience of central Westchester. Conducted by the Musical Director, Jun Nakabayashi, the orchestra and lead singers of Taconic Opera will perform a semi-staged production of La Traviata (orchestra, costumes, minimal sets) and the audience members, if they choose, can be part of the chorus of the opera. Music will be provided if you do not have your own La Traviata score. The roles of Violetta and Alfredo will be sung by young and catapulting stars of the opera firmament who will thrill the audience with their mastery of both the music and the dramatic acting of this Verdi classic. The Taconic Opera chorus will sit among the audience - which the conductor will face at the correct times - so that any willing audience member can feel like a true blue chorus member in a live opera. The setting is intimate and the leads fully engage the audience to make them a part of the performance. It is a unique and unparalleled artistic experience that left audiences raving last season. Tickets are $33, $25 for seniors and $15 for students. Tickets can be obtained by calling 1-855-886-7372 or online at http://www.taconicopera.org. Score reservations (optional-$10) can be made by phone only.

Ferry Sloops Presents: "The Unknown Palisades: A Slideshow Through Time" At the next Ferry Sloops meeting on Wednesday, April 1, 7:30PM at Shattemuc Yacht Club, the Spring Lecture Series kicks-off with "The Unknown Palisades: A Slideshow Through Time" presented by Eric Nelsen, longtime historical interpreter for Palisades Interstate Park. The cliffs and forested talus slopes of the Palisades rise to more than 600 feet above the river. In the mid-19th Century, New York builders quarried the Palisades for building materials, ship ballast, and for concrete aggregate. With the efforts of the New Jersey Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission was established in 1900, and was granted the authority to purchase and manage the land. Through images and narrative, Eric Nelsen, brings the story of the Palisades to life: its fishermen's villages and palatial estates, the epic struggle to preserve the ancient cliffs, and the thriving beaches and campgrounds of the Depression and New Deal era. Admission is FREE and open to the public. Come with a dish to share at 6:30PM and join us for a potluck supper or arrive a little before 7:30PM for the presentation. Shattemuc Yacht Club is the host of the Ferry Sloops "2015 Spring Lecture Series”. For more information, please visit the Ferry Sloops website http://www.ferrysloops.org/

The Ossining Story: A Bicentennial Celebration 1813–2013 is still available for purchase. This special-edition souvenir journal commemorated Ossining’s 200th birthday, honoring its past and present. Ossining became the first incorporated village in Westchester County in 1813, when it was still known as Sing Sing. The journal is the culmination of the work of many Ossining residents who cherish our village’s history. Its managing editor, Martha Mesiti, Town Historian and a lifelong resident, reached out to the organizations that comprise Ossining’s vibrant community to share their histories. Over 60 groups responded, including the Police and Fire Departments, houses of worship, educational groups, military groups, historical organizations, social and service groups, and more. Mesiti also commissioned articles of historic interest from local authors and historians, covering such topics as the village’s unique architecture, Sing Sing marble, Sing Sing prison, and historic personalities like the Old Leather Man. The 160-page book is only $10 a copy. Copies of the book are available at the Ossining Municipal Building (16 Croton Ave.). Copies may also be purchased online at the Village of Ossining Web site www.villageofossining.org.
