Walk leaders and back-markers should exchange mobile phone numbers so that contact can be maintained in cases of emergency. Leaders and back-markers without phones should appoint substitutes. Numbers should be exchanged at the start of the walk. Every effort should be made to ensure a first-aid kit is available on all walks.. Walks are graded according to the following classification of pace:- A = Fast B = Brisk C = 5-7 miles Medium pace D = generally 4-5 miles at a more moderate pace Starting times of walks vary and need to be noted carefully. Members should ensure they carry their membership cards on all walks. This provides a project update, information about ongoing work and detail about the A303/A358 corridor. Project update Since we last provided an update in the winter 2018 newsletter, the A303 Sparkford to Ilchester dualling scheme has been progressing through the Examination period of the Development Consent Order (DCO) process. This is the planning process required for the scheme, where the DCO application must be approved before the scheme construction can commence. On 12 June 2019 the DCO Examination for the A303 Sparkford to Ilchester dualling scheme closed. The next step in the DCO process will be for the Planning Inspectorate to write a report about the Examination for the Secretary of State for Transport. This report will include a recommendation on whether to refuse or grant the DCO. The report from the Planning Inspectorate will be issued to the Secretary of State for Transport by the end of September 2019. A three-month period will then commence enabling the Secretary of State to decide whether to grant or refuse the DCO. This means a decision should be announced by the end of 2019. The decision will be published alongside the Planning Inspectorate report on the National Infrastructure Planning website. On the edges are C19 historic orchards, bounded by mature hedgerows, and several farmsteads. The orchards are a particularly strong landscape feature in terms of social history and culture as they represented an intensively productive use of land, providing cider for the labouring classes while also allowing the grazing of sheep and poultry. There are many listed buildings but most prominent are the Church and Cadbury Court at the historic core around which development is concentrated. The southern edge of the Conservation Area is characterised by the parkland setting of the Court. Under the ownership of Sir Archibald & Lady Langman the estate introduced scientific methods of farming in the 1930’s. The Langman’s prosperity, as a result of this innovation, is evident in the provision of the new village hall opposite Glebe House on Woolston Road. Although most of the other farms have been converted to residential use, Manor Farm remains the manufacturing base for renowned Montgomery Cheddar and Ogleshield cheeses. The River Cam, which rises in Yarlington, runs along the western edge of North Cadbury and through Brookhampton. -

From: To: A303 Sparkford to Ilchester Cc: [email protected] Subject: A303 Consultation Ilchester to Sparkford Date: 01 September 2020 20:25:34 Dear Secretary of State for Transport, A303 CONSULTATION – ILCHESTER/PODIMORE TO SPARKFORD We live in the village of West Camel immediately south of the section under consideration for upgrade. Having lived in the village for over 30 years we have been involved in previous consultations and do appreciate all the complexities. The initial advice given locally for this consultation was that as Option 2 appeared to be such an obvious choice that is was – “a no brainer” because: It is cheaper, quicker to build and safer as requires little in the way of entrance and exits…..so why would anyone looking at the options choose Option 1 ? Unfortunately the consultation process allowed for votes worldwide and it appeared a successful Facebook campaign from the smaller community north of the A303 called in votes from as far away as Australia to “Save our Vale”, not realising that almost as much ‘new land’ would be carved up to dual along the (broadly) existing route for Option 1 but causing abject misery and chaos for the whole build, particularly past the new primary school in Queen Camel, which Highways England didn’t initially know had been recently built. Option 1 appears to be the only section of the A303 not bypassing local communities. Ilminster, Wincanton, Sparkford and Mere to name just a few. Over time we have raised a number of concerns about process with those running the consultation –it appears that the planners can flex the area they consider as ‘local’ and in this case, they chose to flex the local boundary to as far away as 7 miles from the planned route. -

Project update The A303 Sparkford to Ilchester Dualling scheme entered the decision period of the Development Consent Order (DCO) planning process on 12 September. This means the examination phase is now over. The Planning Inspectorate has written its report for the Secretary of State for Transport, which includes a recommendation on whether to grant or refuse the DCO. This report is only made available to the Secretary of State who now has until 12 December 2019 to decide whether to grant or refuse the application. The decision letter will be published alongside the Recommendation Report on the National Infrastructure Planning website once the announcement is made. The forthcoming South Somerset Local Development Framework (LDF) will be required to allocate new development sites for both housing and employment for the period 2006-2026, with the focus of major growth placed upon Yeovil, thereafter the district’s major towns and rural centres. As part of the process of finding suitable sites for development, a landscape study to assess the capacity of the settlement fringe to accommodate new development in a landscape-sympathetic manner, is commissioned. This will complement other evidence-based work that will contribute to the LDF process. 1.2 PPS 7 commends the approach to the identification of countryside character developed by the Countryside Agency (now Natural England) and suggests that it can assist in accommodating necessary change due to development without sacrifice of local character and distinctiveness. -

Landscape Character The Yeovil Scarplands sweep in an arc from the Mendip Hills around the southern edge of Somerset Levels and Moors to the edge of the Blackdowns. Rivers like the Brue, Parrett and Yeo drain from the higher ground of the Scarplands cutting an intricate pattern of irregular hills and valleys which open out to the moorland basins. To the east there is a gradual transition to Blackmore Vale and the Vale JULIAN COMRIE/COUNTRYSIDE AGENCY JULIAN COMRIE/COUNTRYSIDE of Wardour and the area is separated from Marshwood Vale The Yeovil Scarplands comprise several scarps and vales formed by the ridge above the Axe Valley.
