BOOM FOR REAL: THE SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT PRESENTS THE ART OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT IN GERMANY BASQUIAT BOOM FOR REAL FEBRUARY 16 – MAY 27, 2018 Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) is acknowledged today as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. More than 30 years after his last solo exhibition in a public collection in Germany, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is presenting a major survey devoted to this American artist. Featuring more than 100 works, the exhibition is the first to focus on Basquiat’s relationship to music, text, film and television, placing his work within a broader cultural context. In the 1970s and 1980s, Basquiat teamed up with Al Diaz in New York to write graffiti statements across the city under the pseudonym SAMO©. Soon he was collaging baseball cards and postcards and painting on clothing, doors, furniture and on improvised canvases. Basquiat collaborated with many artists of his time, most famously Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. He starred in the film New York Beat with Blondie’s singer Debbie Harry and performed with his experimental band Gray. Basquiat created murals and installations for New York nightclubs like Area and Palladium and in 1983 he produced the hip-hop record Beat Bop with K-Rob and Rammellzee. Having come of age in the Post-Punk underground scene in Lower Manhattan, Basquiat conquered the art world and gained widespread international recognition, becoming the youngest participant in the history of the documenta in 1982. His paintings were hung beside works by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter and Cy Twombly.

In a rather conventional sense, great performing is often associated with a sense of interiority, becoming your character, identifying with your role. In that sense, a great performer could become anyone else simply by looking deep within herself. Of course, there’s a long history of performance practices that reject this model. Yet whether it is a matter of embracing or rejecting what is, so to speak, on the inside, there is an overarching belief that great performers are uniquely adept at locating themselves and using that self to build a world around them. It is no surprise then that today we are all expected to be great performers. Our lives are filled the endless capacity to shed one skin for another, to produce multiple cyber-personalities on a whim. We are hyperaware that our outsides are malleable and performative—and that our insides might be an endless resource for reinventing and rethinking ourselves (not to mention the world around us). So perhaps it’s almost too obvious to say that Jibz When I was a youth, say, about 8, I played a game in the Cameron, the mastermind behind Dynasty Handbag, is an incredible woods with my friend Ocean where we pretended to be hookers.

  • KENNY SCHARF Bringing the Fantasy Into Reality
193 Kenny Scharf is an artist who has worked with objects, interiors and kitsch for his whole career even if he’s best known for his paintings. He made TVs, cars, telephones, a crib for his daughter, pillows, boomboxes, a piano, a mixer and exhibited some of them in the Customized Appliance Show at The Queens Museum of Art, New York in 1991. They are not self-made, they’re customizations of found junk, halfway between artifacts and acts of resistance to the industrial aesthetic. Scharf is usually associated with the East Village scene of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. A dear friend of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, often at that time his practice was read as graffiti art even though he wasn’t painting so much on public walls. Probably the reason is that he was KENNY SCHARF Bringing the fantasy into reality INTERVIEW BY FranCesCO SpampinatO PHOTOGRAPHY BY YE RIN MOK acting in the public sphere, customizing daily appliances and appropriating pop imagery from advertisements and TV in the same way graffiti artists were customizing the urban landscape. Wikipedia says he lives in New York but he’s constantly moving between his houses. He says he bounces around a lot but can feel at home anywhere as long as he’s get- ting enough sleep. He’s the kind of guy who feels most at home in nature. He has a huge loft in Brooklyn. However, he passes as much time as he can in his places in Brazil, a paradise on the beach, and Culver City, LA.

The Jetsons The Flintstones Keith Haring Jean Michel Basquiat paintings sculptures Kenny Scharf Kenny Scharf, born in Hollywood, California in 1958, first came to artistic prominence in the early 1980s in New York, along with artists Keith Haring and Basquiat. Scharf placed his bright imagery, drawn from television and pop culture, on the streets and in nightclubs of the city, helping to nurture a dynamic and freewheeling scene. Scharf calls his art Pop Surrealism: "Surrealism is about the unconscious, and I feel my work is about the unconscious. The images come from the unconcious except that my unconscious is filled with pop imagery. My unconscious is pop, so therefore the art would be Pop-Surrealism." Scharf is a prolific artist who has worked in many traditional media, including painting, printmaking, drawing and sculpture; he has also designed lifeguard stations, Zippo lighters, watches, cellphones, carpets and carnival carousels. Scharf has exhibited widely, including the Salvador Dali Museum, St. Petersburg, Bienalle de Sao Paolo, Brazil, Tony Shafrazi Gallery and Queens Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Contemporary Art, Monterrey, and the Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art. The exhibition opens September 27, 2018 from 6 - 8 pm at Alden Projects and contains 50+ original works in spray-paint, crayon, collage, and silkscreen (through November 4, 2018). A newly released 144-page book published by Alden Projects, Richard McGuire: Art for the Street – New York 1978-82 (2018) accompanies the exhibition. Edited by Todd Alden with a foreword by Luc Sante, this is the first monograph on the artist’s early work, including black-and-white photographs (1979) which McGuire commissioned his friend, Martha Fishkin, to take alongside McGuire after periodic nights of wheatpasting, registering the (formerly) gritty downtown New York contexts the Ixnae Nix works occupied, including St. Marks Place, Houston Street, and White Street. Organized by Todd Alden in collaboration with Richard McGuire, the exhibition also includes archival materials indexing both the early downtown New York contexts, and the artists associated with McGuire: Keith Haring, Jean- Michel Basquiat, Al Diaz, ESG, Bush Tetras, Konk, Alan Suicide, Y Pants, UT, Tseng Kwong Chi, John Sex, Test Pattern, and Samo Is Dead Jazz Band.

MAD PRESENTS CINEMA SERIES DOCUMENTING THE RISE OF NEW YORK’S 1975–80 PUNK MUSIC SCENE Go Nightclubbing Archive Features 30 Hours of Remastered Historic Video Featuring Performances by 82 Bands such as Dead Boys, Iggy Pop, the Heartbreakers, John Cale, and the Cramps New York, NY (April 7, 2014)—This spring, the Museum of Arts and Design presents its latest cinema series, Go Nightclubbing Archive, featuring selections from a historic video archive of the burgeoning New York punk scene from 1975 to 1980. In partnership with NYU’s Fales Library, which recently acquired the archive, MAD will premiere ten individual screenings that draw from over 200 hours of remastered footage by Emily Armstrong and Pat Ivers. As young filmmakers, Armstrong and Ivers documented performances by 82 bands in downtown New York such as the Dead Boys, Iggy Pop, the Heartbreakers, John Cale, the Cramps, DNA, the Lounge Lizards, Bush Tetras, Sun Ra, the Go-Go’s, Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, James Chance and the Contortions, and many others. Running from April 18 through June 6, 2014, the program is the first in a series examining the role of local documentary cinema in New York. Go Nightclubbing Archive showcases how documentary practices not only capture and shape our understanding of history, but also are a formative voice within that historic moment. Filmmakers Armstrong and Ivers met in the mid-1970s, when both were making experimental film and video art during the explosive and innovative movement that would become the punk rock music and art scene. Soon after meeting, they began filming live performances of bands at clubs like CBGB, Mudd Club, and Danceteria.

  • The Life and Art of Jean-Michel Basquiat
PERFORMING BLACKNESS AT THE HEART OF WHITENESS: THE LIFE AND ART OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT Christopher F. Johnston A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2008 Committee: Andrew Hershberger, Advisor Irina Stakhanova Graduate Faculty Representative Ellen Berry Khani Begum © 2008 Christopher F. Johnston All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Andrew Hershberger, Advisor Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1960 to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother, Jean-Michel Basquiat rose to prominence as a painter in the 1980s art world. When he died in 1988 at age twenty-seven from a drug overdose, he had achieved more fame and wealth than any black artist in history; he remains today the world’s most recognizable black painter. This study seeks to show how Basquiat’s racial and cultural background shaped his life and art. In its first three chapters, this study examines Basquiat’s experiences in New York City in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s in a variety of contexts including his neighborhoods, schools, the graffiti movement, avant-gardism, and the art world. This study finds that the artist’s blackness often made him racially hyper-visible and the target of racism and stereotyping. It also finds that of all the artistic traditions that Basquiat was exposed to and involved in, his experiences with performance art had the most enduring impact on him artistically. In its final two chapters, this study looks at Basquiat’s public persona and art. Chapter Four covers the way the artist walked, talked, dressed, wore his hair, acted in interviews, posed for photographs, and behaved in public in general.
