I make raw ink drawings to remember what I see, and then that becomes like a music score." - Francesco Clemente After showing Francesco Clemente's work at our Salzburg gallery in 2004 and 2007, we are very pleased to announce his first solo exhibition of works on paper. Francesco Clemente is one of the most renowned international artists who revitalized figurative painting with the emergence of the Neo- Expressionist movement in the late 1970s early 80s. Clemente's unique style combines the tradition of Indian imagery, the Romanticism of William Blake and of Italian Renaissance frescoes to make evocative and powerful works in a sensuous palette. In this exhibition, the artist will present 21 new pastels and watercolors, all in the form of a puzzle piece, installed to create a mosaic of poetic, colorful figurative images, which do not necessarily reveal a whole picture. As in much of his work, Clemente makes references to non-Western symbols, myth and spirituality, astrology and the four elements, sexuality and senses, as well as dream-like visions. Francesco Clemente was born in 1952 in Naples. From 1970 he studied architecture at the University of Rome, and began to exhibit his drawings, photographs and conceptual works in Europe. From 1973, he travelled regularly to India, and in 1981 he moved to New York. Since the mid-80s, Clemente's work has been the subject of many exhibitions: in the Berlin National Gallery (1984/85), Basel Museum of Contemporary Art (1987), Philadelphia Museum of Art (1990), Royal Academy of Arts, London (1991), Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris (1994/95), Guggenheim Museum, New York (1999/2000), Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin (2004), the National Archaeology Museum, Naples (2002/03) and the National Museum of XXIst Century Art, Rome (2006). -

BOOM FOR REAL: THE SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE FRANKFURT PRESENTS THE ART OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT IN GERMANY BASQUIAT BOOM FOR REAL FEBRUARY 16 – MAY 27, 2018 Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) is acknowledged today as one of the most significant artists of the 20th century. More than 30 years after his last solo exhibition in a public collection in Germany, the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is presenting a major survey devoted to this American artist. Featuring more than 100 works, the exhibition is the first to focus on Basquiat’s relationship to music, text, film and television, placing his work within a broader cultural context. In the 1970s and 1980s, Basquiat teamed up with Al Diaz in New York to write graffiti statements across the city under the pseudonym SAMO©. Soon he was collaging baseball cards and postcards and painting on clothing, doors, furniture and on improvised canvases. Basquiat collaborated with many artists of his time, most famously Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. He starred in the film New York Beat with Blondie’s singer Debbie Harry and performed with his experimental band Gray. Basquiat created murals and installations for New York nightclubs like Area and Palladium and in 1983 he produced the hip-hop record Beat Bop with K-Rob and Rammellzee. Having come of age in the Post-Punk underground scene in Lower Manhattan, Basquiat conquered the art world and gained widespread international recognition, becoming the youngest participant in the history of the documenta in 1982. His paintings were hung beside works by Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Gerhard Richter and Cy Twombly. -

In a rather conventional sense, great performing is often associated with a sense of interiority, becoming your character, identifying with your role. In that sense, a great performer could become anyone else simply by looking deep within herself. Of course, there’s a long history of performance practices that reject this model. Yet whether it is a matter of embracing or rejecting what is, so to speak, on the inside, there is an overarching belief that great performers are uniquely adept at locating themselves and using that self to build a world around them. It is no surprise then that today we are all expected to be great performers. Our lives are filled the endless capacity to shed one skin for another, to produce multiple cyber-personalities on a whim. We are hyperaware that our outsides are malleable and performative—and that our insides might be an endless resource for reinventing and rethinking ourselves (not to mention the world around us). Artist Resources – Kenny Scharf (American, b. 1958) Kenny Scharf website Scharf on Instagram Scharf at Honor Fraser gallery, Los Angeles “I think a lot of the magic happens when you don’t know what you’re going to do. You just let fate guide you and the use of magic. You depend on another kind of energy or something outside of yourself. It’s kind of a scary thing and it’s really exciting. I really believe spontaneity and magic come together.” Scharf told Art21 Magazine in a 2012 interview covering the artist’s solitary, spontaneous, and eternally optimistic process. Scharf began transforming rundown spaces into immersive installations in the 1980s, creating art out of his love of collecting found objects and making something unexpected out of trash. His dayglow blacklight installation, Cosmic Cavern was born from his former studio and living space in Brooklyn, which he transformed into an art installation and party space. In 2014, Scharf led a group of students in creating their own cosmic caverns at The Modern in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Portland Art Museum recreated the cavern in 2015. Scharf also led Art in Focus through the space in a 2016 video interview. Though painting is Scharf’s primary medium in his mature practice, he still creates sanctioned graffiti in the form of murals, which can be seen enlivening Scharf in New York, 1982 streets in New York and Los Angeles, and even the interior and exterior of parking garages. In 2014 Scharf entered the fashion industry, adapting his dayglow graffiti aesthetic for Louis Vuitton, creating apparel and shoe designs with Jeremy Scott for Adidas, and producing limited addition body lotion sets for skin care experts Khiels. -

Debuting new paintings and frescoes, both shows will present boldly expressive, large-scale works that comprise a meditation upon the restless physical and spiritual journey that has shaped the course of the artist’s acclaimed four-decade career. Francesco Clemente: India will be on view at Vito Schnabel Projects, New York, from November 8, 2019 through January 17, 2020. The scope and power of the artist’s oeuvre are felt through his distinctive sense of color and his deeply personal visual lexicon, a fi gural language that subsumes eclectic narratives, rituals, ideas, and symbols inspired by his global wandering. Clemente’s work traverses time and recorded history to probe the mysteries, ecstasies, incongruities, and, ultimately, the gravitas of the human condition. In his quest to explore the metaphysics of spirituality, mysticism, identity, and the self, Clemente has created a body of work in a variety of mediums that is often charged with eroticism and intimacy, rich in references, and expansive in its openness to interpretation. -

Kenny Scharf 1 2 Kenny Scharf has remained a key and prolific figure in the art world since his Preface early participation as a key proponent in the NYC East Village Art scene in the early 1980s, where he worked alongside artist peers such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. His works have been exhibited widely ever since. When we look at a work by Kenny Scharf, we see a dynamic and joyous burst of colour, form and energy radiating from the canvas. However, these saturated, seemingly playful shapes have sharp teeth that lurk beneath, reflecting the dual nature of our modern society. Kenny Scharf’s paintings are always reflective of the artist’s unique, self generated, visual universe, drawing from ideas and experiences extracted from the surrounding world. He succesfully conjoins fine art with popular culture feeding from the traditions of Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, comic books and Street Art. We are delighted to collaborate with this major international artist and showcase ‘Blobz’, an incredible new collection of works, signalling his first solo show with Opera Gallery at our flagship London space. TAYLOR McKIMENS Taylor McKimens è nato a Seattle (WA) nel 1976, è cresciuto a Winterhaven (CA) e ha ottenuto il suo BFA all'Art Center College of Design di Pasadena, in California, nel 1999.
