The Funky Diaspora
The Funky Diaspora: The Diffusion of Soul and Funk Music across The Caribbean and Latin America Thomas Fawcett XXVII Annual ILLASA Student Conference Feb. 1-3, 2007 Introduction In 1972, a British band made up of nine West Indian immigrants recorded a funk song infused with Caribbean percussion called “The Message.” The band was Cymande, whose members were born in Jamaica, Guyana, and St. Vincent before moving to England between 1958 and 1970.1 In 1973, a year after Cymande recorded “The Message,” the song was reworked by a Panamanian funk band called Los Fabulosos Festivales. The Festivales titled their fuzzed-out, guitar-heavy version “El Mensaje.” A year later the song was covered again, this time slowed down to a crawl and set to a reggae beat and performed by Jamaican singer Tinga Stewart. This example places soul and funk music in a global context and shows that songs were remade, reworked and reinvented across the African diaspora. It also raises issues of migration, language and the power of music to connect distinct communities of the African diaspora. Soul and funk music of the 1960s and 1970s is widely seen as belonging strictly in a U.S. context. This paper will argue that soul and funk music was actually a transnational and multilingual phenomenon that disseminated across Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond. Soul and funk was copied and reinvented in a wide array of Latin American and Caribbean countries including Brazil, Panama, Jamaica, Belize, Peru and the Bahamas. This paper will focus on the music of the U.S., Brazil, Panama and Jamaica while highlighting the political consciousness of soul and funk music. -

Espie University of Delaware [email protected] Abstract The history of Jamaican music includes Roots, Mento, Ska, Rocksteady and Reggae styles - setting the stage for the origination of the Dancehall genre in the early 1980s. While a wide range of ethnographic literature has been published on these musical foundations, few publications exist on the evolution of Dancehall in Jamaica. Dancehall has expanded in the past 10-15 years due to increasing effects of collaboration between American and Jamaican artists and DJs along with the ease of musical transmission through technology. In this ethnographic research, I have studied the evolution of Dancehall to create a portrayal of musical trends leading to the predominance of Dancehall in Jamaica. I collected data over 10 days of fieldwork in Portland, Jamaica in June of 2015. The music played by four club DJs was chosen as the focus of study because of its influence on Portland’s musical culture. Data consisted of observational field notes and 10 hours of audio recordings of local DJs in club settings. Audio recordings were analyzed for traditional beats, song length, production year, language choice, and added effects. Field notes were used as a secondary source to confirm/disconfirm the emerging musical themes from across these DJs. Findings have been compared to the existing literature to create an updated trajectory of musical trends within Dancehall. Along with contributions to the field of ethnomusicology, this research can be used in music education in informal music learning on a domestic and international level. -

Prejudice and Homophobic Violence in Jamaica
FOR LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER HUMAN RIGHTS F ALL:2004 WHAT HAPPENED TO “ONE LOVE”? PREJUDICE AND HOMOPHOBIC VIOLENCE IN JAMAICA In May 2004, Amnesty International issued a report documenting a serious pattern of homophobic violence in Jamaica. The violence ranges from vigilante attacks to torture and ill-treatment by police. And there appears to be little or no accountability for these human rights abuses. Exhortations to kill and maim lesbian and gay people can even be found in the lyrics of a number of popular Jamaican dancehall artists, such as Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Buju Banton—a radical departure from Reggae’s musical tradition of preaching “one love” and social justice. Amnesty has called on the Jamaican government to institute law reform and other steps to protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Jamaicans from discrimination and violence. The brutal murder in June of Brian Williamson, prominent gay activist and a founding member of J-FLAG (Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals & Gays), and the recent campaign by some LGBT activists calling for the boycott of those Jamaican Reggae stars spouting hate lyrics ignited intense public debate and media interest. In this issue, we talk to the program manager of J-FLAG about the situation for the LGBT community in Jamaica, and what he thinks can be done to address discrimination and violence against LGBT people. We are withholding the name of our interviewee to honor his request to remain anonymous due to fear for his own safety. UTfront: Give us a sense of the conditions of LGBT rights in Jamaica. -

RASTAFARI: DREAD, POLITICS, AGENCY Instructor: Dr. Neil Roberts Spring 2009 Williams College AFR302.01/ PSCI234.01/ Mon/Th, 2:35-3:50 PM REL261.01 Office: x4772, NAB 213 Office hours: Tu, 1:00-3:00 PM [email protected] Course description: The emergence of Rastafari in the twentieth-century marked a distinct phase in the theory and practice of political agency. From its heretical roots in Jamaica, Garveyism, Ethiopianism, and Pan-Africanism, Rastafari has evolved from a Caribbean theological movement to an international political actor. This course investigates the political theory of Rastafari in order to develop intellectual resources for theorizing the concept of agency in contemporary Africana thought and political theory. We will analyze texts and audio-visual works on the political economy of late colonial Jamaica, core Rastafari thinking, political theology, the role of reggae music, the notion of agency, and the influence of Rastafari on global politics. Course requirements: Participants are expected to attend class regularly and complete readings for class listed on the syllabus. I will generally begin each class summarizing briefly the previous session’s main points, and shall proceed to lecture for a portion of time about the current day’s topic. Although this is primarily a lecture course, you should be prepared to engage in a class discussion and group activities. Throughout the semester, we will be connecting intellectual and political themes raised in various texts and documentaries to musical works. Thus, regularly utilizing services such as iTunes or listening to music on CDs is strongly encouraged.
