CATALOGUE WELCOME to NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS and NAXOS NOSTALGIA, Twin Compendiums Presenting the Best in Vintage Popular Music
NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS/NOSTALGIA CATALOGUE WELCOME TO NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS AND NAXOS NOSTALGIA, twin compendiums presenting the best in vintage popular music. Following in the footsteps of Naxos Historical, with its wealth of classical recordings from the golden age of the gramophone, these two upbeat labels put the stars of yesteryear back into the spotlight through glorious new restorations that capture their true essence as never before. NAXOS JAZZ LEGENDS documents the most vibrant period in the history of jazz, from the swinging ’20s to the innovative ’40s. Boasting a formidable roster of artists who forever changed the face of jazz, Naxos Jazz Legends focuses on the true giants of jazz, from the fathers of the early styles, to the queens of jazz vocalists and the great innovators of the 1940s and 1950s. NAXOS NOSTALGIA presents a similarly stunning line-up of all-time greats from the golden age of popular entertainment. Featuring the biggest stars of stage and screen performing some of the best- loved hits from the first half of the 20th century, this is a real treasure trove for fans to explore. RESTORING THE STARS OF THE PAST TO THEIR FORMER GLORY, by transforming old 78 rpm recordings into bright-sounding CDs, is an intricate task performed for Naxos by leading specialist producer-engineers using state-of-the-art-equipment. With vast personal collections at their disposal, as well as access to private and institutional libraries, they ensure that only the best available resources are used. The records are first cleaned using special equipment, carefully centred on a heavy-duty turntable, checked for the correct playing speed (often not 78 rpm), then played with the appropriate size of precision stylus. -
Genre, Ethnoracial Alterity, and the Genesis of Jazz Manouche
Genre, Ethnoracial Alterity, and the Genesis of jazz manouche SIV B. LIE It’s French jazz. Why suggest that it’s jazz manouche? Django obviously started it, the whole movement, on account of him being a superstar, being a Gypsy, and then afterwards the Gyp- sies copied him, and it evolved into that. It’s a category that doesn’t correspond to reality. People should say “Django style.” For me, jazz manouche doesn’t exist, in fact. It’s a fiction. [Jazz manouche] must exist because everyone talks about it.1 n the above quotations, speakers address the ontology of “jazz ma- nouche,” a genre originally grounded in the recordings of guitarist Django Reinhardt (1910–53) and invented several decades after his I 2 death. They represent only a fraction of the musings on the subject that I recorded while interviewing musicians and others involved in the jazz ma- nouche scene in France. Centered on the reproduction of Reinhardt’s musical style, the genre is commonly associated with the Manouche subgroup of I am deeply grateful to Patrick Andresz, Alain Antonietto, Stella Funaro, Gérard Gerber, Engé Helmstetter, Michel Lefort, Gigi Loeffler, Marcel Loeffler, Mandino Reinhardt, and numerous others in France for sharing their stories and lives with me. I would like to thank Michael Beckerman, J. Martin Daughtry, Maureen Mahon, Will Robin, David Samuels, Davin- dar Singh, and especially Benjamin Givan for their thoughtful comments on earlier versions of this article. I would also like to thank the anonymous reviewers of this Journal for the helpful feedback they have provided. -

NEW ALBUM RELEASE - SIX & SIX | Swing to Bop
NEW ALBUM RELEASE - SIX & SIX | Swing to Bop In 2019 RÊVE BOHÈME released their sixth album on the Norwegian Gypsy Jazz label Hot Club Records. As the album title refers to, RÊVE BOHÈME has picked SIX lesser-known swing compositions from their hero DJANGO REINHARDT and matched them with SIX bebop standards that Django loved to play! All the songs on the album have the characteristic acoustic sound of RÊVE BOHÈME and with their modern and dynamic interpretation of these classic songs RÊVE BOHÈME makes an exiting contribution to the contemporary Gypsy Jazz-scene today. SIX & SIX | Swing to Bop was recorded in one studio session with RÊVE BOHÈME having fun and playing live, choosing mostly “first takes” of the recorded material – so this album is a must for all Django-enthusiasts and Gypsy Jazz lovers! Line-up: Jens Fuglsang (lead guitar), Finn Poulsen (harmonica) Robert Pilgaard (rhythm guitar), Jesper Riis (double bass) The band / The story - www.reve.dk Rêve Bohème is from Denmark but played their first concert at the gypsy jazz restaurant Bistro d'Eustache in Paris, 1998. Since then they have been touring and playing clubs and festivals in Norway, Sweden, Finland, France, England, Germany, Holland, Greece and Poland. The band have played and performed with international gypsy jazz artists such as Dorado Schmidt, Robin Nolan, Andreas Öberg, Jon Larsen & HCN, Gustav Lundgren, Basily, Paulus Schäfer, Angelo Debarre, Gary Potter, Biel Ballester, Mozes Rosenberg - and many others. Over the years Rêve Bohème have recorded in different line-ups and musical settings. Their fusion between the Nordic and South- European traditions have always created a unique musical universe which can be heard on their five previous albums: Django goes North 2012 (Calibrated), Café Django 2009 (Calibrated), Best of Rêve Bohème 2007 (Hot Club Records), Django’s Dream 2005 (Calibrated) and Django Jalousie 2002 (Cope). -

Enrico Crolla “Henri”
1 The GUITAR of ENRICO CROLLA “HENRI” Solographers: Christian Dangleterre & Jan Evensmo Last update: June 20, 2020 2 Born: Napoli (Naples), Italy, Feb. 26, 1920 Died: Paris, Oct. 17, 1960 Introduction: What Oslo Jazz Circle knew about French jazz when I grew up there can be summed up with one name: Django Reinhardt. It took my good friend and guitarist Jon Larsen, the motor and godfather behind the string swing rejuvenation in the 1980s, to point out that France had so much more to offer with regard to jazz guitar. Henri Crolla is a perfect example! History: Born to a family of itinerant Neapolitan musicians, he moved with his family to Porte de Choisy in France 1922 following the rise of fascism in Italy. One of his neighbours was a young Django Reinhardt, with whose family he became close. He died in Paris from lung cancer (ref. Wikipedia). 3 HENRI CROLLA SOLOGRAPHY JOSEPH REINHARDT ET SON ENSEMBLE Paris, April 1944 Claude Laurence alias Andre Hodeir (vln), Joseph Reinhardt solo (g), G.Milpat alias Henri Crolla (g), Marcel Fabre (b), Pierre Fouad (dm), Odette Pacou (vo). Django Reinhardt: the Journey of the Gypsy King
Django Reinhardt: The Journey of the Gypsy King [Minor Swing ] [Black Slide] Introduction: The ideas of art music and folk music have always been separate and somewhat black and white. The virtuosity of performance and the complexity of composition have largely defined art music—just as simplicity and relatability have done that for folk music. To combine the two styles of music for creation’s sake is not a new musical idea, but historically the end product generally has seemed to privilege and to lean more towards art music rather than folk. Django Reinhardt, however, is one of the first musicians to ever take it in the other direction, elevating folk influences to be on a par with classical ones. His ability to take simple rhythms and melody lines and add complex virtuosic guitar improvisation over those melodies are what make the gypsy style so innovative, aesthetically rewarding, accessible, and historically influential. His contributions in gypsy jazz have left their mark on other styles of music such as blues, rock and roll, bluegrass and other jazz styles. Furthermore, if we were to mention the greatest guitar players of the last century, we would have to include Django Reinhardt on the list. 1:15 History of Django and his disability: As with most European gypsies, the Reinhardt family was constantly on the move. Therefore, the story of Django Reinhardt's birth is somewhat unclear. However, we do know that he was born somewhere near a little town called Liberchies in Belgium in a gypsy encampment on January 23 rd , 1910. He was named Jean-Baptiste Reinhardt, and as with most gypsy children, he was given a nickname. -
Florin Niculescuniculescu
