In addition to the academic courses there will be a series of evening guest lectures covering topics of general interest. In 2016 lectures were given by the Master of Corpus Christi on the role of the master in Cambridge colleges, his diplomatic career in the Middle East and current events in Syria and Iraq; by Professor John Hatcher on the Black Death and specifically its impact on the city and ; by Dr Geoffrey Edwards on Brexit; and by Dr Ewan St John Smith on the peculiarities of the naked mole-rat and what we can learn from them.

Social Programme

Social activities will be offered on most afternoons each week. Possible activities include a guided tour of the extraordinary Parker Library at Corpus Christi to view its unique collection of medieval and renaissance manuscripts, a visit to the King’s College Chapel, a walk along the River Cam to take tea at The Orchard Tea Room at Grantchester, a visit to the Fitzwilliam museum or the University Botanic Garden, or the following architectural tours:

The Wren Library, Trinity College Visit one of the most beautiful buildings in Cambridge. This stunning library, designed by the world-famous architect Sir , houses a rich and diverse range of treasures: hundreds of illuminated manuscripts, a lock of ’s hair, letters by , and even the original manuscript of Winnie the Pooh! This is a rare opportunity to explore the library’s collection and to learn more about the history and architecture of Cambridge’s grandest college.

Three Wren Chapels Sir Christopher Wren is best associated with rebuilding the city of London after the Great Fire of 1666, but it was in Cambridge, with the construction of Pembroke College Chapel, that Wren’s architectural career began. The great architect continued to build in Cambridge throughout his life. This walking tour looks at the college chapels of Peterhouse, Pembroke and Emmanuel, which, in their own ways, tell the story of Wren’s career as well as the profound changes that transformed seventeenth-century Britain.

For those attending the two week programme, or the first one week programme, Saturday 2 September will be spent in London where there will be the option to join a specially organised tour, together with free time to explore the city’s many sights.

The afternoon of Sunday 3 September will be spent visiting the charming city of Ely, located just a few miles outside of Cambridge. Ely is home to one of England’s finest medieval cathedrals and participants will wander through this stunning Gothic structure and learn more about its history and the people who have made this site so important for over a thousand years, explore the city’s historic sites and relax in Ely’s charming shops and cafes.

Accommodation and Meals

Participants will live in standard single occupancy student bedrooms with either shared or private bathroom facilities, according to preference. A limited number of rooms have two single beds, and these will be made available for those wishing to share on a first come first served basis. Rooms will be in buildings adjacent to the main college site.

There will be a Formal Hall each week. These three-course meals, a Cambridge tradition dating back centuries, will be served in Corpus Christi’s historic dining hall and will be preceded by drinks on one of the College lawns (weather permitting).

A traditional English Afternoon Tea, with sandwiches, cakes, scones and jam, and tea and coffee, will be held in College each week.

Summer school participants will also be provided with swipe cards to take meals in the College cafeteria (breakfast, lunch, dinner) or College bar (light snacks, drinks), with sufficient credit to purchase approximately two meals (breakfast and one other meal) per day in Cambridge. This partial meal plan will give participants the opportunity to explore the many wonderful cafes and restaurants around the city.

Fees

Costs included in the Summer School Fees: Accommodation, approximately two meals per day in Cambridge, internet access, College facilities, a Formal Dinner each week, an Afternoon Tea each week, 2 academic courses per week, a series of guest talks and tours, and for those attending the two week summer school a day trip to London (transportation & morning tour) and an afternoon visiting Ely (transportation and tour).

Participants will need to cover the following additional costs: Travel and medical insurance, travel from their home to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, approximately one meal per day while in Cambridge, meals and any activity fees in London and Ely, together with any personal expenditure or independent travel.

Paying the fees: Once your place on the summer school has been confirmed you will be asked to pay a non-refundable deposit to Corpus Christi College to secure your place. The deposit is £400 for those attending for the full two weeks, and £200 for those attending for just one week. The final balance of the summer school fees will then be due by 30 June 2017.

The College’s preferred method of payment is by bank transfer, and the College’s bank account details will be provided in the email confirming your place on the summer school. When making the bank transfer please quote LLSS and your last name, and please tick the relevant box to confirm you will pay your bank’s charges and the receiving bank’s charges.

Terms and Conditions

Application and payment deadlines The application deadline is 15 June 2017, but applications may still be accepted after this date if places are available.

Places on the summer school and accommodation options are filled on a first come, first served basis, so early application is strongly advised.

To reserve a place on the summer school, and any accommodation chosen, a non-refundable deposit must be paid. The deposit is £400 for those attending for the full two weeks, and £200 for those attending for just one week.

The balance of the summer school fees is due by 30 June 2017. Failure to pay the balance by this date may re- sult in the summer school place being offered to another applicant.

Cancellation and refund policy If an applicant must cancel their place on the summer school, the following refunds shall be offered: A full refund (excluding the non-refundable deposit) if the place is cancelled by 30 June 2017 A 50% refund (excluding the non-refundable deposit) if the place is cancelled by 13 July 2017 A 25% refund (excluding the non-refundable deposit) if the place is cancelled by 28 July 2017 After 28 July 2017 no refund shall be made

Academic courses and social programme The summer school will endeavour to provide the academic courses and social programme as described on the website. In the unlikely event that an instructor has to withdraw their course due to illness or other exceptional reason, the summer school will seek to offer a replacement course in the same subject area. In the unlikely event that, for reasons beyond its control, the summer school is unable to provide elements of the social programme as described, suitable alternative activities shall be offered.

Insurance The College is unable to accept liability for any loss or damage to personal property. All applicants are strongly advised to take out sufficient travel and medical insurance to cover the duration of the summer school, together with any journey to or from the UK. They should also take out vacation cancellation insurance.

College rules In submitting an application form to the Lifelong Learning Summer School, applicants agree to abide by the College rules.
