Characterizing the Spatial Distributions of Spotted Lanternfly
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Characterizing the spatial distributions of spotted lanternfy (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) in Pennsylvania vineyards Ashley Leach1,3 & Heather Leach2,3* Spotted lanternfy (SLF) is an invasive insect in the Northeastern U.S. projected to spread nationally and globally. While SLF is a signifcant pest of vineyards, little is known about the pest in grape agroecosystems including its spatial ecology. SLF spatial patterns were analyzed using a combination of approaches including generalized linear mixed efect models, Moran’s I statistic for spatial clustering, and Empirical Bayesian Kriging. Analysis revealed that SLF displayed signifcantly clumped distributions in monitored vineyards. Approximately 54% and 44% of the respective adult and egg mass populations were observed within the frst 15 m of the vineyard edge. Importantly, the spatial concentration of adults at the edge was consistent temporally, both between years and weeks. Moreover, high populations of SLF on vines were signifcantly correlated with reduced fruit production in the following year. Mark-release-recapture of SLF revealed that higher proportions of SLF were recaptured on vines with high pre-existing SLF populations, indicating that SLF may exhibit aggregation behavior along vineyard perimeters. Monitoring and management eforts for SLF should be prioritized around vineyard edges as it may signifcantly reduce infestations and subsequent damage. Te spatial ecology of invasive species has received considerable attention in the past decade 1–6. Spatial ecology ofers unique insights into how organisms organize and utilize habitats across both space and time. Geostatistical and spatial analyses identify predictable invasion patterns of invasive pests, which aid in describing how these species colonize foreign habitats and what landscape attributes contribute to the their success7,8. -

INTRODUCflON The Infraorder Gerromorpha comprises of semi-aquatic bugs characterised by long conspicuous antennae, longer than head and inserted in front of eyes. They are distributed in all kinds of climatic zones, except the coldest and driest parts. This infraorder contains 8 families namely, Gerridae, Veliidae, Hydrometridae, Mesoveliidae, Hebridae, Macroveliidae, Paraphrynoveliidae and Hennatobatidae (Andersen, 1982a). Knowledge of Indian semi-aquatic Hemiptera is limited to the taxonomic preliminaries, recording species from different parts of the country. Limois emelianovi, sometimes considered a synonym of emeljanovi, is the correct name for this species, doi: 10.1111/j.1748-5967.2008.00188.x as emeljanovi is simply another transliteration of the personal name Emelianov, Emeljanov or Emel’yanov. The name emelianovi stands correct based on the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature code 32.5.1, because there is no internal evidence of an inadvertent error, and an incorrect transliteration is not considered an inadvertent error. The cytochrome oxidase I (COI) barcoding regions of both species were sequenced and compared for future reference. -

While efforts to tackle other invasive hemipterans like the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri (Kuwayama), the Bagrada bug, Bagrada hilaris (Burmeister), and the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Sta˚l) are still underway, L. delicatula is a new pest that could potentially impact industries ranging from lumber to wine. Here we review the literature regarding this insect in its native and invasive range in Asia. We also highlight the pest status and tentative management recommendations for this pest in North America. Birdantis collaris (Walker, 1870) stat. rev. and B. trilineata (Schmidt, 1926) stat. rev. are reinstated as valid species, respectively from status of subspecies and as junior synonym of B. delibuta Stål, 1863. These four species, as well as the other one previously described from the Maluku Islands, B. decens Stål, 1863, are illustrated from their type specimens. An identifi cation key, a distribution map, illustrations of habitus and details of male genitalia are provided. The synonymy between Myrilla Distant, 1888 and Birdantis is formally reinstated and all species formerly placed in the subgenus Birdantis (Myrilla) are transferred to Birdantis sensu stricto. Birdantis is transferred to the subfamily Aphaeninae Blanchard, 1847 and now contains eighteen species distributed in Maluku (fi ve species), New Guinea and neighbouring islands (ten species) and Australia (three species). -

Zettel* Abstract Based on collections in the Natural History Museum Vienna, taxonomic and faunistic results about the Ger romorpha of Myanmar are presented, including descriptions of new species and first species records. The following seven species are described: Hebnis binnensis sp.n., Hebrus schillhammeri sp.n., Timasius gold- marie sp.n., and Timasius schaeferi sp.n. of the Hebridae; Geovelia orientalis sp.n. and Perittopus zimmer- mannae sp.n. of the Veliidae; and Metrocoris atlas sp.n. of the Gerridae. Most new species are exclusively from the Alaungdaw Katthapa National Park in Sagaing Division, except for Perittopus zimmermannae sp.n. which was additionally collected in Chin State.
