Investment trends represent a critical issue in capital-intensive sectors such as the ski industry. The data are based on snow reliability indicators and snowmaking investments covering 1997–2014. Descriptive statistics reveal that snowmaking has been the second investment item for ski resorts regardless of the elevation or ski resort size. The study finds that snowmaking investments are highly negatively correlated to snow conditions of the prior year for small and medium-sized ski resorts. Introduction Lift ticket prices differ considerably across Alpine countries when expressed in a common currency. For example, based on a representative data set from the winter season 2010/2011, the average price of a one-day lift ticket is €37 in Aus- tria, €34.50 in France, and €39.20 in Switzerland. Similarly, the six-day ski pass costs about €177 in Austria, €175 in France and €188 in Switzerland on aver- age. One obvious factor of the price differences is the difference in VAT rates across countries. Countries with a higher value-added tax (VAT) rate experience higher prices.1 However, when prices are adjusted for differences in value-added tax across countries and then expressed in a common currency, the international price differences in one-day lift tickets remain quite large, ranging from €33.30 in Austria to €32.60 in France and €36.10 in Switzerland. Overall, French one-day lift tickets (net of VAT) are 10 per cent lower on average than those in Switzerland, and 13 per cent lower when the medians are compared. When lift ticket prices are measured as six-day ski passes (net of VAT) the price differen- tial between the two countries is less much pronounced. Climate change is increasingly regarded as a threat for winter tourism due to the combined effect of decreasing natural snow amounts and decreasing suitable periods for snowmaking. The present work investigated the snow reliability of 175 ski resorts in France (Alps and Pyrenees), Spain and Andorra under past and future conditions using state-of-the- art snowpack modelling and climate projections. The natural snow reliability (i.e. without snowmaking) elevation showed a 5 significant spatial variability in the reference period (1986 - 2005) and to be highly impacted by the on-going climate change. The technical reliability (i.e. including snowmaking) is projected to rise by 200 m to 300 m in the Alps and by 400 m to 600 m in the Pyrenees in the near future (2030 - 2050) compared to the reference period for all climate scenarios. While 99% of ski lift infrastructures are reliable in the reference period thanks to snowmaking, a significant fraction (14% to 25%) may be considered "at risk" in the near future. -
