Joel Rippinger by: Fr. Charles Reichenbacher OSB ’59, Director of Planned Giving Fr. Joel Rippinger OSB (age 70) celebrates this year his Golden Jubilee of monastic profession (August 16, 1969). Always a busy man, Fr. Joel is noted for his walking at a runner’s pace, jogging and bike-riding, and never wasting time, with a book or periodical always in hand. He possesses a gifted mind, with a great variety of interests—kind of a renaissance man. His students find him hard to stump on his famous potpourri days, as do his fellow monks as they watch Jeopardy. His niece, at younger age, gave the famous family quote: “Not another museum, Uncle Joel.”

Fr. Joel is the second oldest of Joe ’40 and Helen Rippinger’s six children (John ’65, Fr. Joel, +Tom ’68, Dan ’72, Tim ’74 and Mary Jo (Mike) DiRe). Patriarch Joe is one of Marmion’s oldest living alums. Fr. Joel was ordained a priest on July 13, 1974 at the Rippinger family’s home parish of Annunciation B.V.M. in Aurora.

At the Abbey, Fr. Joel is currently the novice master and master of junior monks, director of oblates, and a sought- after monastic retreat master, lecturer on things monastic, and past president of the American . At Marmion Academy he is the faculty/staff chaplain and, now in his 43rd year, an instructor of Honors Theology and Advanced Placement American History. He is a former chairman of the theology department, dormitory prefect in the residential program, and varsity tennis coach.

Fr. Joel attended St. Meinrad Minor Seminary (southern IN), Benedictine University (Lisle), Bellarmine School of Theology (Loyola University, Chicago), Notre Dame University, and San Anselmo School of Theology (Rome, Italy). He is the author of The Benedictine Order in the U.S.: An Interpretative History (1990). He is fluent in a number of languages.

Fr. Joel loves Benedictine monastic life, living it and knowing its history, both Marmion’s (he is the Abbey’s archivist) and the history of the Benedictine Order. His family, his Marmion community, his many students and alums, and his monastic friends throughout the world salute him for his 50 years of monastic life—living it and spreading its message throughout the world. Abbey - 3 Abbot John Visits the Guatemala Mission

In early January, Abbot John visited Marmion’s Abbey’s Guatemala mission. During this time the mission’s school, Colegio Seminario San José, began its new academic year on January 11.

While there, Abbot John also spoke with the Benedictine priory community about beginning a new retreat center in the very near future, using the buildings that served for many years as dormitories for residential students. During the past six years these buildings were rented to the National Major Seminary’s philosophy program. The contract with the major seminary ended in November last year. These buildings are once again available for use. After much study and discussion, it was decided not to resume the school’s residential program, which would be much too costly, but to open a financially self-sustaining retreat center which will be of service to a great number of people in the area.

Your prayers on behalf of the students and monks at The Guatemala mission are very much appreciated.

Academy - 7 Junior Ring Ceremony by: Anthony Tinerella ’84, Head of School and Principal During my time away from Marmion, working for the Archdiocese of Chicago, I was made aware and experienced a tradition that many schools had for their junior class when they received their class ring – an actual ceremony during the distribution of the class rings. When I became Head of School and Principal, one of the many ideas that I brought back with me to the Academy was the idea of adding a ceremony for our junior class as they approached senior year.

12- Advancement Paul Duranceau ’69 Memorial Science Fund by: Fr. Charles Reichenbacher OSB ’59, Director of Planned Giving

The Paul Duranceau ’69 Memorial Science Fund was established in 1989 to support student science competitions, science or engineering projects, or related activities. The goal is to use only the annual interest earned.

Paul Duranceau of Madison, WI (originally from Aurora) was killed in a tragic automobile accident in Madison on November 21, 1987. At the time Paul was the laboratory director of Residuals Management Technology, Inc. of Madison. He held an M.A. in chemistry from Michigan State University and had a life-long love of science research.

At the time of his death Paul was survived by his wife Judy, and his parents Vern and Donna Duranceau. All three are now deceased. This would be Paul’s 50th Alumni Reunion year for the class of 1969.

The Duranceau Science Fund was begun by his wife and parents, family members, classmates and friends in Paul’s memory. Family members and friends continue to add to the Fund. It now has a Gift Principal of over $21,000.

14 - In the News The Man in Black An Ash Wednesday Reflection by: Peter Ferraro ’19 The theme of Marmion’s Ash Wednesday Mass is “walking with Jesus to Calvary through Lent.” The Man in Black is a major part of that theme and has been a tradition for many years at Marmion. I remember my first time participating in the Ash Wednesday Mass during my freshman year. The Man in Black was AJ Jaffe ‘16. Watching him act out the execution was like something I’d never seen before. From the suspenseful music to the solemn look on everyone’s face around me, especially on AJ’s, I felt the true meaning of the Lenten season: the sacrifice Jesus has made for all of us.

The goal of this Mass is for us to recognize and carry our own cross. Our cross includes the hardships of life: the losses, the stresses and the sufferings. We follow the teachings of Jesus and use his strength in us to carry our cross. Some of us face many different challenges in life that may not be challenges in another’s life. For me, my struggles and sufferings were through injuries. My junior and senior year I was ranked #1 in the state for wrestling. However, this vanished quickly. I endured two gruesome injuries in both years to where I lost the opportunity to compete in the state tournament. I was mentally broken like never before. However, being surrounded by my brothers at Marmion they all helped me carry my cross. I continued to smile unconditionally with a positive attitude even though I was in pain. I did not let this pain hinder the person I have become today. I have so often been overshadowed by my sporting accolades that no one knew who I was outside of sports. Luckily, I was able to turn these injuries into something bigger. I gave myself up to God and turned to him for help. This led to me being more involved around campus and volunteering a countless amount of hours. It is through this I found my escape, I had nothing to complain about because I began to see who God really wanted me to be. As a result, at the Ash Wednesday Mass when the cross was finally set in place, I knelt down in front of the cross to pray and I felt all my burdens lift off my shoulders and I finally felt freed from all my sufferings. Top left: “The Man in Black”(the executioner), Peter Ferraro ’19, reenacts the crucifixion of Jesus as part of Ash Wednesday Mass. March for Life 2019 by: Sean Kramer ’19 Earlier this year, I had the absolute pleasure to attend the March For Life along with 28 other students from Marmion and Rosary in Washington, D.C. We spent four days there, going to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, marching on the Mall to the Capital Building, learning about the Sanctity of Life at a Pro-Life conference at Georgetown University, and making new friends we didn’t even know existed. It was, and forever will be, one of the greatest experiences of my life. There’s something powerful about being in such a large In my eyes, life begins at the moment of conception, and group of people who fight for the same beliefs. The anything that takes away that life is a threat to human energy it gave me is indescribable. Being able to see that dignity that every human is granted. But the sad reality is our President, Vice-President, powerful political figures, that in America there are over one million lives lost annually close friends, and strangers I have never seen before are all due to abortion. And over sixty million since the case of Roe fighting for the same thing gives me hope that I am making v. Wade that legalized abortion in 1973. That’s sixty million a difference that my children will be able to see the effects lives that will never get to experience a life that we have of. Being able to hear stories of abortion activists flipping been so richly blessed with. They never even had a say in sides once they have seen behind the curtain gives me hope the matter. That is why I march. To give a voice to those that we can turn around society to the side of Life. who cannot speak. To protect their Right to Life. Academy - 15
