C. MANISTEE NATIONAL FOREST ...... (800)821-6263 1755 South Mitchell Street (231)775-2421 Cadillac, Michigan 49601 There are nearly 500,00 acres of it on the Manistee National Forest, emerging from the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. And it isn't one of those accident-of- nature type of environments that you stumble across in the wilderness from time to time, even though it may look the part.

It was long enough ago now so that even the camper's memory is dim, but that was back in the days of how- the-West-was-won. As the 19th Century finally turned its back on the future, the part of lower Michigan began to look remarkably like a sand dune.

Today, except along the expansive beaches of the Lake Michigan Recreation Area, only remnants of the old

MICHIGAMEA LODGE 110 DECEMBER 2014 WHERE TO GO HIKING AND CAMPING BOOKLET Pg 3-84

sand blowouts are apparent. It has become a forest of camping and campers, swimming, hunting, fishing - lush, green shaded spot alongside an era of chaos and unrest, where people can spread out in the privacy of their own dreams.

A year 'round Forest, the Manistee can be as magnificent to the eye as to the spirit. Along quiet forest trails, colorful wildflowers and shrubs bloom throughout the spring and summer, and in the autumn, stands of hardwood trees burn in brilliant shades of yellow and red, celebrating the climax of another season in the company of gentling green conifers. And if you're a good listener and can read signs along these trails - tracks, nipped branches, animal droppings, the bark of trees scrubbed smooth. There may be a second kind of excitement: the feeling of solitude that knows it's not alone.

For excitement that's a little more tangible, the Manistee is laced with a network of rivers that offer fast-paced sport for canoe enthusiasts-and a refreshing sight for those who simply enjoy bubbling woodland streams. Commercial canoe rentals are available throughout the area.

Camp along the river? Just be sure you're not trespassing on private property-there's a lot of it within the Manistee's boundaries; and be careful of the stream banks. We're trying to keep them out of the water.

And by the way, hunting and fishing regulations-which cover such species as deer, squirrel, ruffed grouse, coho salmon, trout and bass-are under the control of Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Sportsmen should check this Agency for season, license and bag limit requirements.

Winter is fun on the Manistee, whether you prefer mechanized travel or not. Eighty-five miles of marked trails, include in which are the Caberfae Way, Udell Hills and Ward Hill Trails, make snowmobiling an all 'round pleasure. A note of caution, however; animals are not snowmobiles enthusiasts. In fact, it would be a good idea for snowmobilers to familiarize themselves with Michigan snowmobiling regulations-available through the Department of Natural Resources or the Manistee National Forest.

And for skiers, the Calerfae and Big M developments offer plenty of open, downhill space.

But what happened to the sand blowouts? That's the real story of the Manistee and of man's struggle for perspective in the natural environment. If you care to take the time on the ground, you can see the story unfold for yourself.

Way back in history, when the place we now call Michigan was still an Indian word-but you've heard that part of the story before.

You've heard about the growing nation that needed timber to build its way through the Eastern Wilderness across the Great Plains to the Pacific; and how the virgin forests were hewn and fired and eventually left to the farmers, who tilled the last sparks of life from their sandy soils.

It was a one-way proposition; development to disaster. It didn't have to happen that way, though; it wasn't planned that way. In fact it wasn't planned at all. That's important.

MICHIGAMEA LODGE 110 DECEMBER 2014 WHERE TO GO HIKING AND CAMPING BOOKLET Pg 3-85

In the lush back country areas of New England, where the mere suggestion will bring seedlings popping through the duff on the forest floor, the extensive cutting brought little more than a passing condition. In time it would, and did, heal itself.

But in sandy Michigan and other similar areas, the cycle of cutting, burning and tilling left a deeper scar, Sand. Miles of it. deep and shifting.

Since the Manistee was declared a National Forest in 1938, man has been retracing his steps slowly backward to the time of the pioneer timber harvests. The planning and recycling which should have slowly penetrated the blowouts, encouraging a reluctant forest to return home.

As you drive across the Manistee, you may see remnants of some of these barren, blown out areas. Harnessed now, their contrast to the lush, surrounding forest is not unpleasant; nor the current timber sales areas. For now that we know about Michigan, the sand is no longer a threat.

So that is where the blowouts went.

Their arrival was no accident, nor was their denature; nor is the vigorous, growing environment embraced by the Manistee National Forest, today.

It was destroyed by man and rebuilt by man-peculiar creature that he is. Perhaps on day he will build cities this way.

The Huron National Forest (see above map for Manistee National Forest, managed by the same office) represents a 415,000-acre partnership between man, the natural environment and the spirit-song which beckons to us all from the heartland of a shaded wood. Neither museum nor monument, the Forest welcomes man, not as a guest or a stranger, but as an integral part of the land itself -- to draw industry and sustenance there, to become invigorated by the growth and to sit quietly at the fountainhead of creation.

Established in 1909 to protect both timber and water resources, these two precious commodities remain today the focal point of Forest activity. Annually, the Huron National Forest harvests about 550,000 board feet of sawlogs and 70,000 cords of pulpwood. All of this timber serves Michigan's industry and Michigan's economy. Celebrating the blessing of the vast timber resource, as well as commemorating the pioneer loggers who first opened this to man's industry, is the nine-foot bronze Lumbermen's Monument, dedicated in 1932. This monument overlooks the Au Sable River and is located in the heart of the Lumbermen's

Monument Auto Tour -- a multiple use demonstration area designed to provide, in miniature, an over-view of a dynamic and productive Forest.

The Au Sable River is the largest of over 650 miles of streams, which lace a pattern among numerous lakes across the forest landscape. These waters are the lifeline of the Huron National Forest, as well as many communities far removed from its boundaries. Intense watershed management, coordinating the activities of timber, recreation and wildlife, keep these waters pure and fresh.

A major portion of this extensive water resource is devoted to recreation. Numerous campsites picturesquely dot stream banks and lake shores. Opportunities for swimming, fishing and boating are plentiful and these waters have long been favored by a wide variety of waterfowl: mallard, black duck, green- and blue-winged teals, widgeons, wood duck, golden eye, bufflehead, merganser, scaup, redhead, canvasback, pintail and shoveler.

For the more adventuresome, the many stream channels offer rewarding sport to canoeing; and another travel way for the adventure seekers is the 220-mile Shore-to-Shore Trail, which connects Lakes Huron and Michigan. Traversing this trail on foot may reveal the many wildlife species of the Huron National Forest: deer, skunk, bear, beaver, mink, fox, muskrat, otter, raccoon, cottontail , snowshoe hare, fox, gray squirrel, and weasel.

Particularly significant and fascinating in regard to wildlife management is the 4,000-acre Kirtland Warbler Management Area east of Mack Lake along the Shore-to-Shore Trail. Currently, habitat management for this rare song bird--which mates only in this portion of Michigan and winters in the Bahamas-- requires periodic prescribed burning, to maintain young stands of jack pine for nesting.

PLACES TO VISIT

THE AU SABLE RIVER flows easterly through the Huron National Forest and empties into Lake Huron. From 1870 to 1890 it was a famous waterway for the logs destined for the sawmills at East Tawas, Tawas City and Oscoda. Today, it is popular with canoeists and fishermen. It spins the turbines that produce electric power from six dams along its length.

LUMBERMEN'S MONUMENT AND MULTIPLE USE TOUR. The monument commemorates the 19th-century loggers who cut the virgin timbers of Michigan. Dedicated on July 16, 1932 , its bronze figures stand 9 feet. This landmark, overlooking the Au Sable River, is the start of the Huron National Forest Miniature Multiple Use Tour. The Tour demonstrates the applied methods of Multiple Use -- see for yourself how Multiple Use works to produce the benefits that flow from the renewable resources of the Forest. This is an area rich in forest and wildlife lore.

THE KIWANIS MONUMENT is a memorial to the Kiwanis Clubs of Michigan. These groups donated funds in 1928 to plant red pines on 10,000 acres within the Huron.

KIRTLAND'S WARBLER MANAGEMENT AREA. There are presently 1,000 of these Warblers left in the world. A management area of 4,010 acres is provided to improve the habitat for the rare song bird which nests only in this area of Michigan.

McKINLEY was once a thriving little city of 800 residents and 2,000 woodsmen. In 1874, a narrow-gauge railroad ran from McKinley to Au Sable on Lake Huron. By 1900, the pine forests were depleted and the town was all but deserted.

B. ICE AGE NATIONAL SCIENTIFIC RESERVE AND TRAIL ...... (608)441-5610 700 Rayovac Drive, Suite 100 Madison, Wisconsin 53711 Imagine a public greenway meandering across Wisconsin's glacial landscape. Imagine a trail 1,200 miles long leading both to places of glacial beauty close to home and to some of the remotest parts of Wisconsin. That is what the late Ray Zilmer of Milwaukee had in mind in the 1950's when he proposed that an Ice Age Glacier National Forest Park be established along the entire length of the marking the furthest advance of the last glacier in Wisconsin. An avid hiker, he proposed a continuous footpath, similar to the Appalachian Trail, as the central feature of the park so that visitors could explore and enjoy the glacial landscape at their own pace. In 1958 the Ice Age Park and Trail Foundation was established by a group of Wisconsin citizens to promote the creation of the national glacial park. As the effort to win Congressional authorization of the park gained momentum, volunteers were already at work building the first segments of the future Ice Age Trail in the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

The result of these efforts was the creation, in 1971, of the nine-unit Ice Age National Scientific Reserve to be administered by the State of Wisconsin in cooperation with, and with assistance from, the National Park Service. While the nine Reserve units contain only portions of the glacial park proposed by Zilmer, the Federal legislation authorizing the Reserve specifically recognized the efforts of the Ice Age Park and Trail Foundation to create a continuos footpath linking these areas, but offered no Federal assistance. 1. LOCATION: See the section on Wisconsin State Parks for notations on which parks are part of the Ice Age Reserve. Additional information is available from the National web site www.nps.gov/iatr. 2.
