(708)366-9420 536 No. HARLEM AVENUE (800)870-3666 RIVER FOREST, ILLINOIS 60305 The Forest Preserve District operates overnight camping facilities for properly supervised youth groups of either boys or girls at camps SULLIVAN, FALCON, ALPHONSE, GLENVIEW, REINBERG, and ZANDER WOODS. Adult and family camping is prohibited within the FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT. Trailers and campers are prohibited. Reservations and permit for the use of DISTRICT operated camps must be obtained from the RECREATION DEPARTMENT, FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT, call (708)366-9420, between the hours of 8:30 am till 12:00 and between 1:00 pm. till 4:30 pm of any work day except SATURDAYS AND HOLIDAYS. Written confirmation and fee, must be received within fifteen (15) calendar days after the tentative reservation has been accepted. Reservations not confirmed within this time period will be AUTOMATICALLY CANCELED. A PERMIT will be issued upon receipt of the written request and fee. Changes will not be accepted after a permit has been issued. Reservations for the following year will be accepted beginning at 8:30 am on SEPTEMBER 15 of the present year. If such date falls on a Saturday or Sunday, reservations will be accepted on either the Friday before or the following Monday. Fees listed herein must be paid in advance and are for the sole purpose of defraying a portion of the maintenance and operation cost of the provided facilities. Make CHECKS payable to the FOREST PRESERVE DISTRICT OF COOK COUNTY. Fees are not refundable. Check out time is 2:00 pm. The fee for lodges, cabins OR a section of larger cabins is $20 per night. CAMP SULLIVAN ENTRANCE is on the northwest corner of 147th Street and Oak Park Avenue, Tinley Park, Illinois. Caretaker's residence is located at the entrance. a. CABINS—Two buildings are each divided into two sections (cabins A and B, cabins C and D). Each cabin/section is provided with ten bunk beds accommodating twenty persons. A separate Lodge building also accommodates twenty persons with bunks. Mattresses and bedding are not furnished. Each cabin/section in a building shares kitchen facilities and play/eating area. The Lodge has its own kitchen and play/eating area. Each kitchen has a stove, refrigerator, sink, hot and cold running water, serving counter, and shelving. Kitchen utensils, dishes or silverware are not furnished. Each cabin/section and the Lodge has its own flush toilet and single shower. Each building has its own pay telephone. All cabins have electric lights and are heated. b. TENT CAMPING--groups may obtain reservations and permits to camp overnight on weekends in their own tents. Water for drinking, cooking, and washing is available from a well in the camp area. Privy type toilet facilities are provided. Tenting areas will be designated by the caretaker. Cabin dinning facilities are not available to tent campers. c. One of two hike trails at Camps Sullivan/Falcon is the Iroquois Spirit Trail. This trail is ten miles long. For details, see Chapter 5, page 8. The other trail located at Camps Sullivan/Falcon is the Big Foot Trail. It is approximately 13 miles long and covers much of the same area as the Iroquois Spirit Trail. The patch shows the Trail following the creek, the cemetery, the old quarry, green for the woods, and a red foot for people not accustomed to long walks. See Chapter 5, page 7. A .PDF file with a copy of the brochure for this trail along with the other Indian Portage Trails is included on the distribution CD for this booklet. CAMP FALCON The camp is located on the south side of 143rd Street, one-quarter mile east of Harlem Ave., Tinley Park, IL. Entrance is through Camp Sullivan (SEE CAMP SULLIVAN). a. CABINS—There are two cabins (east and west) accommodating a group of thirty. Bunk beds are provided, but mattresses and bedding are not furnished. There is a flush toilet in each cabin. A pay telephone is provided in each cabin. The kitchen and dinning hall, equipped with tables and benches, are in an adjacent building. The kitchen has a stove, refrigerator, sink, hot and cold running water, serving counter, and shelving. Kitchen utensils, dishes or silverware are not furnished. b. CAMP ALPHONSE Camp is located on the NORTH side of DUNDEE Road, Illinois Route 68, ½ mile west of QUENTIN Road in DEER GROVE FOREST PRESERVE, North of PALATINE, IL. a. FACILITIES--The area is available for overnight on weekends camping by groups having their own tents. Water for drinking, cooking, and washing is available from a well in the camp area. Privy type toilet facilities are provided. Tenting areas will be designated by the Caretaker. b. ZANDER WOODS Camp is located on the SOUTH side of the Thornton-Lansing Road at Wiligan Road, one mile east of THORNTON, ILLINOIS. a. FACILITIES--SAME AS ALPHONSE b. CAMP REINBERG Located on a 75 acre site on the east side of Quentin Road one-quarter mile north of Dundee Road (Rt. 68) in Deer Grove Forest Preserve, north of Palatine, Illinois. a. CABINS—There are six heated cabins; cabin 1 sleeps 13, cabin 2 sleeps 7, cabin 3 sleeps 16, cabin 5 sleeps 10, cabin 6 sleeps 15, and cabin 8 sleeps 11. Cots and mattresses are provided, but no sheets, blankets, or pillows. There is a toilet, sink, and shower facility in each cabin. There is one pay telephone for the camp. The kitchen and dinning facilities are located in a separate building for all cabin visitors. The kitchen has stoves, refrigerators, sink, hot and cold running water, serving counters, shelving, and tables. Kitchen utensils, dishes or silverware are not furnished. (815)727-8700 22606 S CHERRY HILL RD PO BOX 1069 JOLIET, ILLINOIS 60434 The forest preserve owns and manages over 15,000 acres throughout Will County. To help protect Will County’s flora and fauna, certain activities within preserves require a permit. Camping permits are available for organized groups, families, and individuals wishing to tent camp. Sites are equipped with grills and picnic tables; all are near drinking water, restrooms, and trails. Group campers must make reservations two weeks prior to their camp date; family campers must make reservations one week in advance for weekday camping and by the Thursday prior to their camp date for weekend camping. Family sites hold a maximum of 6 people; group sites hold 12 people. Fees are $10 per site for residents, $20 per site for nonresidents for Family sites; and $25 per site for residents, $50 per site for nonresidents for Group sites. A phamplet listing all of the County facilities with a map showing their location is available. Following is a partial list of the sites that would be of most interest to Calumet Council Scouts. A. This area has been used for District camporees. c. Plum Creek Nature Center features hands-on displays that help you explore your natural world.
