Served as the Chief Executive Office of a public, comprehensive university offering 116 graduate and undergraduate programs, with an emphasis on education, health, sciences and business. The university enrolls over 12,000 students and employs more than 700 faculty members.

The President’s cabinet included the Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs, Vice President of Finance and Administration, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Vice President of Student and University Affairs, and Executive Assistant to the President-Director of Diversity and Equity. SCSU is part of the Connecticut State University System which includes three other state universities. The University has a budget of $200,000,000.

Major Accomplishments  Enhanced communication with a of activities including an online president’s blog providing updates in key areas from academics to construction to campus safety and highlighting accomplishments by faculty and staff.  Met with a number on campus constituencies, including faculty, staff and students.  Initiated small-group breakfast meetings with faculty and staff.  Participated in open University Dialogues.  Instituted office hours for individual meetings with members of the campus community each Friday.  Developed a President’s Student Advisory Committee to meet periodically with a cross-section of students (full-time, part-time, transfer, graduate, and students with special needs) to discuss campus issues and concerns from a student perspective.  Met regularly with Union stewards.  Launched the Southern Academy with support from a national sponsor, Dell Corporation.

Campus Outreach/Meetings  Mayors of New Haven and Hamden.  Members of the New Haven legislative delegation.  Superintendents from New Haven, Meriden, and Hamden.  Representatives of the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League.  Three local Chambers of Commerce.  Leadership of the Community Foundation for Greater New Haven.  Several community non-profits leaders.

Leadership and Management  Hired several new managers, including three Deans and Associate VP for HR.  Reorganized Enrollment Management by hiring new Associate VP.  Reorganized in two areas to better align the University: o The Police were moved from Student Affairs to Finance and Administration, which avoids any potential conflicts of interest within Student Affairs and the campus. o Public Relations now reports directly to the President to eliminate any potential block of communication.  Met enrollment goals. 2 STANLEY F.  Increased retention rates.  Completed all materials for Nursing Ed.D. program in collaboration with Western Connecticut State University.  Successfully secured funding for the new School of Business building.  Secured bond support to complete renovation and expansion of the Library.

Activities for community development and university fundraising:  Worked with national leaders to assist SCSU in re-focusing its urban education mission by working to energize the community to support education.  Raised approximately $25,000 in scholarship support though performance by Diane Bish, world renowned classical organist.  Raised $1.5 million, with support from Institutional Advancement.

Served as Chief Executive Officer of a public, high research activity, Land Grant University committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarly and creative research, and effective public service. The University offers degree programs at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels, with emphasis on engineering, science, technology, agriculture. A diverse student population of 9000 undergraduate and 1500 graduate students are enrolled in more than 116 undergraduate degree programs and 59 graduate programs. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&T) had an all-funds budget of approximately $500 million and a workforce comprised of 2000 employees. NCA&T is one of 16 institutions that comprise the University of North Carolina System of comprehensive colleges and universities.

While serving as the Chancellor, I formed a cohesive, goal-oriented vision for the Cabinet which included the Provost/Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, Vice Chancellor for Development and University Relations, Vice Chancellor for Research, Vice Chancellor for Institutional Technology, Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, General Counsel, Internal Auditor, Athletic Director and Special Assistant to the Chancellor.

Under my leadership the institution focused on preparing a globally competent student with a strong natural science focus; maintaining outstanding academics in liberal arts; education, nursing, agriculture, business and fine arts; continuing to support the unique partnership with UNCG through Joint Nano Science and Engineering School; and continuing the exclusive partnerships with Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC). 3 STANLEY F. Major Accomplishments . Eliminated serious audit findings in the first year. . Re-centered the institution’s academic excellence by enrolling the finest freshman class in 25 years. . Increased quality of the incoming class for 2008-2009 based on SAT scores and GPA’s. . Implemented the Dowdy Scholarship program, a four-year scholarship for outstanding scholars with GPA’s ranging from 3.2 to 4.0. . Secured the prestigious Engineering Research Center (ERC) grant awarded by the National Science Foundation, a cornerstone award of $18 million over 5 years with a 10 year life span (the first ever for an HBCU). . Improved the School of Nursing state boards pass rate from 66% to 91% and removing the school from probation and having the program granted full accreditation for eight years. . Opened the first Wall Street Trading Room at an HBCU. . Signed a Memorandum of Agreement with GTCC as an entry point for students not quite prepared to enter NC A&T.

Leadership and Management . Member of the University of North Carolina Administrative Council. . Chair, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Council of Chief Executive Officers. . Served on a number of local and regional community and business boards.

Served as Chief Executive Officer of Coppin State University, a model urban, residential liberal arts university located in the northwest section of the City of Baltimore that provides academic programs in the arts and sciences, teacher education, nursing, graduate studies, and continuing education. Coppin State University has a culturally rich history as an institution providing quality educational programs and community outreach services. Coppin was comprised of nearly 4,000 students and offered 53 majors and nine graduate-degree programs. Coppin is one of 13 institutions that comprise the University System of Maryland comprehensive colleges and universities and research institutes.

The President’s Cabinet included Academic Affairs, Finance, Student Life, Planning and Accreditation, Institutional Advancement, External Affairs, Information Technology, and Capital Planning. These units comprised over 500 professionals and a budget of $75,000,000.

Academic Appointments  Full Professor and served on a Doctoral Committee at Morgan State University.

Major Accomplishments . Coppin was elevated to University status within the first year of my administration. . Increased operating support by fifty percent. . Led the effort to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with Helwan University, Helwan, Egypt, to enhance math and science and engineering opportunities for students at both universities. . Development and implementation in fall 2005 of the Coppin Academy, new Thurgood Marshall Gates radical high school - $650,000.

Vice Chancellor of Student and Multicultural Affairs/Professor, 2001-2003, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI.

Chief Officer for student and multicultural affairs including: Gear-Up, Student Academic Development Center, Recruitment and Outreach, Office of Student Life, Athletics, Norris Health Center, Enrollment Services, Financial Aid and Student Employment Services, Klotsche Center, Auxiliaries, and UWM Children's Center. These units comprised 500 professionals and a budget of $230,000,000. The Administrative Council included twelve directors, four Executive directors and an Associate Vice Chancellor.

Major Accomplishments . Completed $27,000,000 Sandburg Project (residence hall). . Secured $44,000,000 expansion and renovations to Klotsche athletic facility.

Leadership and Management . Served as the Chief Administrative Officer of the Division of Student and Multicultural Affairs. Provided leadership in the division on setting policy, monitoring, evaluation, and meeting the needs of our 23,000 students at UWM. . Member of Chancellor's Agenda Committee. . Member of Chancellor's Cabinet. . Chaired Administrative Council in Division of Student and Multicultural Affairs. . Chaired Milwaukee Commitment, which included Plan 2008 for diversity. . Lead UWM, with Chancellor, in review and adoption of the Global Sullivan Principals. . Worked with Chancellor on partnership in Nigeria. . Represented the Division of Student and Multicultural Affairs at state, regional and national levels. . Served on a number of community boards.

Sullivan-Spaights Distinguished Professorship, 1998-2001, University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee, Schools of Social Welfare and Education, Milwaukee, WI.

Served as the Sullivan-Spaights Distinguished Professor, the only professorship named after African Americans in the entire University of Wisconsin System.  Graduate School Appointment - Schools of Social Work and Education.  Served on Doctoral Committees - School of Education.

Major Accomplishments . Total Funded Projects, $1,321,000 . Established five Sullivan-Spaights Scholarships (four-year tuition, room, and board - $640,000). . Developed the Sullivan-Spaights First Summer Institute in Milwaukee on June 18, 1999. Three national scholars were invited to examine adolescent fathers' issues with over 110 participants ($21,000). . The Mentoring Institute - "1000 Boys to 1000 Men" is a comprehensive Institute with support from OIC-GM, the Youth Leadership Academy, and local African American churches ($120,000). . Authored the State of Black Milwaukee and The State of Black Milwaukee Through the Eyes of Children - two texts in collaboration with the Urban League of greater Milwaukee, funded by the Helen Bader Foundation ($70,000). 5 STANLEY F. . Sullivan-Spaights Policy Institute - First project Kellogg Foundation Devolution Initiative ($270,000 over three years). . Pre-Release Center Project with OIC-GM, State Corrections Department, and private business groups. Developed program and evaluation component. (Start- up funding $50,000). . Created the Sullivan-Spaights Foundation Account ($150,000).

Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, 1993-1998, Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic, CT.

Managed all academic support units including the Advisement Center; Learning Center; Registration; Admissions and Enrollment Management; the J. Eugene Library and Media Services. Also had responsibility for all campus outreach activities, research and grant development, distance learning, and played a significant role with continuing education. Served on the President's senior staff and assisted in the development and implementation of policy at Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU). Served in place of the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the President in their absence.

Major Accomplishments . Management oversight of the construction of the new J. Eugene Library, a $27.5 million, 120,000 square foot state of the art facility, which was reviewed by the New York Times as one of the top libraries on the east coast. . Raised $1.2 million over five years for ConnCap and CAP Step Programs. . Obtained $100,000 from Northeast Utilities for the technology program. . Secured $3.5 million, over five years, for outreach support, scholarships, and research. . Increased enrollment for six consecutive years. ECSU had the best recruitment and retention record for students of color and first generation students.

Leadership and Management . Provided continuing professional development and training in academic administration, information and educational programs, telecommunications technology (distance learning). . Created environment where all academic support professionals worked together to build an enrollment management team and set a new focus for ECSU. . Continuous monitoring, evaluation, and improvement of academic support programs, curriculum development, students services, faculty needs, faculty research support, retention and recruitment, community outreach, academic needs and distance learning. . Maintained liaison with national and state groups in response to accreditation standards and external professional organizations. . Developed and offered a course in the South Arsenal Neighborhood Development housing project. . Developed a project with the Prince Hall Masons to offer courses in their facility in the community. . Provided leadership in the ECSU male student group to help address academic needs and retention.

Provided leadership for research and development, collaborative leadership in the Schools of Social Work, Medicine, and Public Health, worked with students, community leaders, and faculty. Assembled four institutions of higher education and numerous scholars to develop the State of Black Hartford, the first text of its kind in Hartford, Connecticut. Served as Editor and developed a board comprised two college presidents, one vice president, and scholars ($50,000).
