The events were part of a joint 2018-19 research project called Song lines on the road – Life lines on the move! (On the Road for short) that sought to share two independent strands of longitudinal, co-produced, arts-based research in which we have developed approaches aimed at amplifying how living knowledge flows on in communities even when the shocks and intensities of lived experience defy articulation and representation.

  • Text by Lizzie Wade & Photos by Nick Russell
Text by Lizzie Wade & photos by Nick Russell 26 Illustration: Sandbox Studio symmetry | volume 7 issue 3 june 2010 In the summer of 1928, the young Ernest O. Lawrence set out across America in a Flying Cloud coupe to begin his new life at the University of California, Berkeley. Eighty-one years later, a writer and a photographer took a road trip to visit the legacy of this accelerator-physics pioneer: American Big Science. 27 Every good cross-country road trip needs a theme. Sure, you can drive across the United States in three days flat, heading in a straight line on impersonal interstates and stopping at the occasional Waffle House for sustenance. But that doesn’t do justice to the great American tradition of the road trip, heading from sea to shining sea with the windows down and the radio on. From On the Road to Easy Rider, we’ve learned that the destination isn’t the point—it’s how you get there that counts. So when my boyfriend Nick Russell and I decided to drive from New York City to Los Angeles last summer, we weighed various options for our theme: The always-classic National Parks? The quirkier tour of Elvis museums? Major cities? Small towns? Desert, mountains, prairie? Uninspired, we threw out ideas for stops along the way. Marfa, Texas— good art, family friends, and UFO lights in the desert. Pueblo, Colorado—the Rocky Mountains, a friend’s parents, and Casa Bonita, a cross between a Mexican restaurant and Disneyland. Petersburg, Kentucky—the Creation Museum, devoted to disproving evolution, which we ultimately decided was not for us.

  • A Storm Is Coming! Lessons in Hurricane Preparedness
A Storm is Coming! Lessons in Hurricane Preparedness Georgia Redonet Long Middle School INTRODUCTION The busy 2004 hurricane season, with fifteen Atlantic storms certainly served to remind us that we should learn the essentials of hurricane preparedness. I find that a study of hurricanes and their effect on our state’s coastal areas provides an exciting and interesting start to the school year in my seventh grade Texas History classes. We study the causes and effects of the storms and how to prepare for emergency situations. While this unit will focus only on hurricane preparedness, in the classroom we will first study the formation and structure of hurricanes and round out our studies by investigating the Great Galveston Storm of 1900. I would suggest that those teachers living in coastal areas choose a storm from their own locale. When there was the possibility that our area might be struck by an approaching storm, as was the case with Ivan in September 2004, the energy level in my classroom was electrifying. Students eagerly watched the news and weather and were going to the school computer lab to check out weather web sites. On May 24, 2005, the American Red Cross reported that they had found many Americans in coastal regions who were not prepared for the coming hurricane season that lasts from June 1 to November 30: Waiting until the last minute to prepare for a hurricane, or assuming that a major storm will not hit your community is a mistake, said Joe Becker, Senior Vice President, Preparedness and Response for the American Red Cross.

Abstract The WPI Science Year IQP intends to contribute to efforts to revitalise interest in science among students ages ten to nineteen by capturing their attention and interest with interactive web-based computer games focusing on the popular themes of sports and inventions. In developing these games, the project team researched student interest in science and web- based games, the UK national curriculum, and educational game design and production. Final deliverables include comprehensive game design documents, detailed storyboards, and two Flash-based Internet games. 2. Executive Summary Educators and industry representatives in the United Kingdom have expressed concern about the decline of interest in scientific study among children and young adults between 10 and 19 years of age. Resources and initiatives are needed for making science provocative and exciting to today’s youth. Science Year is a UK government-based initiative that seeks to spawn interest in this target age group through various educational resources such as web-based games, nationwide projects, and CD-ROMs for use in the classroom.
