Tras su debut en 2004 en el Auditorio Nacional de Música de Madrid, han sido ganadores (recibiendo además el premio especial del público) del prestigioso ARO lnternational Music Competition (Múnich, 2005), y distinguidos con la Medalla de Plata del ciclo El Primer Palau (Palau de la Música de Cataluña, Barcelona, 2005). Recibieron del Ministerio francés de Salud y Juventud, en París, una subvención para la grabación de un dúo tras haber ganado el concurso Musiques d'Ensembles 2008, y se proclamaron también ganadores y premio especial Mozart en el Bialystok lnternational Piano Duo Competition (Polonia). En 201 O, los hermanos Víctor y Luis del Valle grabaron un disco con música del compositor Tomás Marco junto a la Orquesta Filarmónica de Málaga. También colaboraron con la Orquesta Real Filharmonía de Galicia en la realización de un disco con obras del compositor gallego José Arriola. Además, grabaron para RNE Radio Clásica, BR (Radio de Baviera), SWR (Süden-Westen Radio) y para el sello discográfico Sony España. También participaron como artistas invitados en la gala final de clausura del XV Concurso Internacional de Piano de Santander Paloma O'Shea (agosto 2005), retransmitida por La 2 de TVE y el Canal Internacional. Por otra parte, han ofrecido recitales en el Festival Internacional Vladimir 2 Spivakov (Moscú), Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad (Suiza), Festival Jeunes Talents (París), Festival Internacional de Cadaqués, Festival Internacional de Perelada, Festival Internacional de Santorini (Grecia), Festival Internacional Dino Ciani (Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italia), Rheingau Musik Festival (Alemania), Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele (Ludwigsburg, Alemania), Printemps musical de Silly (Bélgica) y Espoo lnternational Piano Festival (Finlandia). La crítica musical los ha calificado de "prodigios": "Belleza sonora y virtuosismo en su prodigioso y renovador pianismo." (El País). NOTAS AL PROGRAMA Por Guillermo Gaviria El programa de hoy incluye música para piano a cuatro manos, también llamada para "dúo de piano", y música para dos pianos. Estas dos opciones cubren un amplio espectro estético y social que incluye los dúos de piano de los siglos XVIII y XIX, una de las posibilidades frecuentes de hacer música en la casa y el desarrollo técnico virtuosistico de la música para dos pianos del siglo XX. El martes 29 de mayo de 1787, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) concluyó en Viena su Sonata para piano a cuatro manos en do mayor, KV 521 , ignorante de que al mismo tiempo se preparaba en Salzburgo el funeral 1 de su padre, Leopoldo Mozart, quien había fallecido el dia anterior . Mozart recibió la noticia unos dias después y, por tanto, no pudo asistir al entierro. Es asi que la Sonata, KV 521 no está relacionada con la muerte de su padre a pesar de la coincidencia de las fechas. Para esta época, Wolfgang y Leopoldo ya se habían distanciado, particularmente por la idea que tenía Wolfgang de desarrollar una vida como compositor independiente más que al servicio de las cortes. Leopoldo nunca aceptó que su Wolfgang abandonara Salzburgo, se casara y llevara una vida independiente. 5 El interés de Mozart por la escritura para piano a dúo viene seguramente de su niñez, de su vida de niño prodigio que tocaba con su hermana Marianne (" Nannerl"). De acuerdo con Maynard Solomon: En sus primeros años de vida, Mozart y su hermana, Marianne, eran como una sola carne y un solo espíritu. Eran "los niños Mozart", viviendo y trabajando juntos por objetivos comunes dentro de la empresa familiar -estudiar, viajar y tocar- presentándose como miembros simbióticos de un solo organismo, compartiendo cada experiencia de la vida, desde los eventos triunfales hasta ver al otro balanceándose en el borde de la muerte.2 Por otro lado, para Mozart -como para cualquier músico en las grandes ciudades, para quien sus ingresos fijos eran insuficientes-la fuente principal de recursos adicionales siempre fueron los conciertos y las clases. Mozart no tenía una particular disposición ni tampoco interés en la enseñanza, y solo cuando sus restricciones económicas llegaban al máximo se preocupaba por conseguir estudiantes. This thesis is a comparative study between pianists who are associated with the Chopin tradition, primarily the Polish pianists of the early twentieth century, along with French pianists who are connected to Chopin via pedagogical lineage, and several modern pianists playing on period instruments. Through a detailed analysis of tempo and rubato in selected recordings, this thesis will explore the notions of tradition and individuality in Chopin playing, based on principles of pianism and pedagogy that emerge in Chopin’s writings, his composition, and his students’ accounts. Many pianists and teachers assume that a tradition in playing Chopin exists but the basis for this notion is often not made clear. Certain pianists are considered part of the Chopin tradition because of their indirect pedagogical connection to Chopin. I will investigate claims about tradition in Chopin playing in relation to tempo and rubato and highlight similarities and differences in the playing of pianists of the same or different nationality, pedagogical line or era. I will reveal how the literature on Chopin’s principles regarding tempo and rubato relates to any common or unique traits found in selected recordings.

Everything about them was a dichotomy; Lili's life was brief and plagued with illness virtually from infancy but Juliette Nadia Boulanger ( September 16, 1887 -- October 22, 1979) lived a long and incredibly productive life to the age of 92, beginning as a composer and instructor before devoting herself solely to teaching composition at 33. For decades, she taught just about every musician you've ever heard of, particularly Americans; more than 1200 students, including: Aaron Copeland, Walter Piston and Virgil Thomson. Others include Marc Blitzstein, Burt Bacharach, Daniel Barenboim, John Eliot Gardner, Philip Glass, Ned Rorem, Gian-Carlo Menotti, Astor Piazzolla, Michel Legrand, Quincy Jones, Dinu Lipatti, Douglas Moore and Thea Musgrave to name just a few! Funnily enough, like Ravel before her, she informed George Gershwin that she had nothing to teach him. But the list is endless... and her reputation endures as one of the major forces in the annals of twentieth century musical world. Ned Rorem called her ''the most influential teacher since Socrates." Her musical influence was so ubiquitous that Virgil Thomson once said: "Every town in the USA had a five - and- dime and a Boulanger pupil." Her younger sister, Marie-Juliette Olga (always known as Lili) Boulanger lived a tragically short life: (August 21, 1893 -- March 15, 1918). She was cursed from the very beginning by chronic illness beginning with bronchial pneumonia at the age of two until her death at 24, plagued with debilitating 'intestinal tuberculosis' (retrospectively thought to have been what is now known as Crohn's Disease.) Yet within that short fragile life she became the first female in its history to win the Paris Conservatoire's prestigious Prix de Rome in her teens, leaving behind a significant body of more than a dozen major works for orchestra, instrumental soloists and chorus.

ABSTRACT This thesis aims to examine Chopin’s own style of playing and to trace some of the approaches taken by 19th century pianists in interpreting Chopin. In doing so, the study hopes to challenge our assumptions about the sacrosanct nature of the text, while offering possibilities for performance. Through examining the accounts of Chopin’s playing and teaching as well as the customs that would have been familiar to him, this study offers a glimpse of the practices that is today often neglected or simply relegated to the annals of ‘historical performance practice’. Special attention is also given to exploring the aspects of Chopin’s style that might pose particular problems of interpretation, such as rubato, tempo and pedalling. In the final analysis, perhaps it is not the early interpreters who represent a ‘radical’ break from Chopin’s aesthetic, but we modern interpreters, with our more rigorous standards and stricter notion of ‘fidelity to the score’.
