At first sight, it seems to uncritically support the Cuban Revolution. However, as one progresses the tone becomes much more nuanced. There emerges a basic sympathy for the aims and objects of the revolution, clearly announced in the introduction, without hiding areas where Cuba has not lived up to these expectations. It is difficult for a European audience to appreciate the level of venomous hostility towards Cuba displayed by US ‘public opinion’ and this is the author's starting point, explaining the divergence of public opinion from scholarly attitudes. Thus, most US and Cuban scholars see the relationship between the USA and Cuba as being dominant, while most politicians and journalists used to see Cuba as a cats-paw for the USSR and now the last vestige of a defeated system. This comes, she argues, from different views of the concept of ‘freedom’, with one side of the debate interpreting this as ‘free enterprise’, while the other side stresses notions of ‘national independence’. Therefore, given the widely received wisdom in the USA that Castro is the last of the Stalinist dictators with no redeeming features, there must be a great temptation to bend the stick, and it will probably be useful for American teachers to have the Cuban side of the argument expressed simply and without rhetoric. -

Further back in U.S. history, cops, and sol- diers murdered hundreds of union members and labor organizers between 1870 and 1950. -

Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts. -

In English- language film studies, perceptions of Cuban cinema are still shaped by an oft- romanticized period in the 1960s, when politically and formally radical works like the recently restored Memorias del subdesarrollo (Memories of Underdevelopment, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, 1968) emerged from the newly created Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos and gained international renown. This vision of Cuban film persists despite growing schol- arly interest in its transformation after the fall of the Soviet Union, the subject of recent book- length studies such as Enrique García’s Cuban Cinema After the 208 JCMS 60.2 • WINTER 2021 Cold War, Nicholas Balaisis’s Cuban Film Media, Late Socialism, and the Public Sphere, and Dunja Fehimović’s National Identity in 21st Century Cuban Cinema.1 Two monographs join this recent crop of works examining Cuban film outside its most familiar parameters, with Megan Feeney’s Hollywood in Havana addressing film culture on the island prior to 1959 and Laura- Zoë Humphreys’s Fidel between the Lines largely focusing on Cuban cinema from the 1980s to the present. The iconic figure of Fidel Castro, rendered all but inseparable from the Revolution in the discourse of the authoritarian Cuban state, looms as a spectral presence in both books. -

© Lonely Planet Publications Arts Dance & Theater 28 Literature 29 Painting 31 Cinema & Television 32 Arts Far from dampening Habana’s artistic heritage, the Cuban revolution actually strengthened it, ridding the city of insipid foreign commercial influences and putting in their place a vital network of art schools, museums, theater groups and writers unions. Indeed, Cuba is one of the few countries in the world where mass global culture has yet to penetrate and where being ‘famous’ is usually more to do with genuine talent than good looks, luck or the right agent. Despite the all-pervading influence of the Cuban government in the country’s vibrant cultural life, Habana’s art world remains surprisingly experimental and varied. Thanks to generous state subsidies over the past 50 years, traditional cultural genres such as Afro- Cuban dance and contemporary ballet have been enthusiastically revisited and revalued, resulting in the international success of leading Cuban dance troupes such as the Habana- based Conjunto Folklórico Nacional (p139 ) and the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. Much of Cuba’s best art is exhibited in apolitical genres such as pop art and opera, while more cutting-edge issues can be found in movies such as Fresa y Chocolate, a film that boldly questioned social mores and pushed homosexuality onto the public agenda. DANCE & THEATER Described by aficionados as ‘a vertical representation of a horizontal act,’ Cuban dancing is famous for its libidinous rhythms and sensuous moves. It comes as no surprise to discover that the country has produced some of the world’s most exciting dancers. With an innate musical rhythm at birth and the ability to replicate perfect salsa steps by the age of two or three, Cubans are natural performers who approach dance with a complete lack of self- consciousness – something that leaves most visitors from Europe or North America feeling as if they’ve got two left feet. -
