Learning about new research projects such as these is one of the many joys of an academic role, and it is crucial that venues such as the RSA Journal exist to disseminate and debate this scholarship. This issue is of course particularly timely, as efforts to decolonise the academy and other structures globally are gathering momentum and attention from the mainstream media. As the Editors’ Introductions note, however, the term ‘decolonisation’ can begin to appear merely cosmetic when not accompanied by a more fundamental transformation in attitudes and being. I appreciate this understanding of ‘decolonising’ for us as being about a disposition, a way of being that emphasises epistemic humility and the need to de-centre from one’s own intellectual authority. However, it is important to be aware that this way of thinking about it is asymmetric; it assumes that one approaches the project of decolonisation from a position of relative authority (as many within the Western academy will). There is of course another side to the dialectic; the peoples, ideas and ways of being that have had epistemic humility and polyglotism forced upon them precisely through colonial encounters. Decolonisation for such groups may not mean the same thing at all; indeed it may mean its presumptive reversal. This does not mean that in either case the ‘decolonisation’ in question is inauthentic or incomplete, but it means that one’s relationship to power structures will profoundly shape what ‘decolonisation’ means for different people–theoretically, practically and ethically. The issue’s emphasis on ‘praxis’ is thus critical for cultivating an appreciation of these differences and diversities within decolonisation, which emerge both within the individual projects and reading across them as a whole. I congratulate the Editors–Romina Istratii, Monika Hirmer and Iris Lim–for their thoughtful curation and editing of this issue, and the contributors for their fascinating contributions. As the Decolonising SOAS Working Group looks forward into the next year, we are keen to ensure that our own work is never just ‘cosmetic’ but concretely focused on transforming praxis within our teaching and learning, our research, our collaborations, our institutional culture and our external partnerships. We are very happy to have supported the RSA’s work this year and look forward to further engaging with SOAS’s Research Student community in the next phases of the project. Dr Meera Sabaratnam Chair, Decolonising SOAS Working Group 1 Note from the RSA / The SOAS Journal of Postgraduate Research, Volume 11 (2017-18), Page 2 A NOTE FROM THE SOAS RESEARCH STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (RSA) As this year’s elected Academic Officer for the RSA, and a PhD candidate at the Centre for Global Media and Communications, I was delighted to be the key organiser of ‘Decolonisation in Praxis’, the first joint conference of the SOAS Research Students’ Association (RSA) and The SOAS Journal for Postgraduate Research (SJPR). The SOAS Research Students' Association is the organisation that represents all Doctoral Researchers at SOAS. Its Committee consists of several Officers that are elected within the SOAS Students' Union elections. The organisation sends two members to the Doctoral School Management Group to ensure that students' voices are heard on all issues that concern them, and that students remain aware of any initiative that is taken by SOAS in regards to the doctoral experience. The RSA also represents Doctoral Researchers to the SOAS Student Union. We are looking back to a very active and successful academic year. During 2017-2018 the RSA President Robyn Waite and fellow RSA Officers have been actively involved in negotiations about issues such as critical changes in visa requirements and work spaces at the Doctoral School We deeply care about making students’ voices heard and our academic voices are part thereof. As such, we wanted to provide a forum for our postgraduate students not only to practise academic skills but also¾and particularly¾to share and discuss topics that lie at the heart of the vibrant and critically-minded SOAS student body. This is how the idea of an annual RSA conference was born during the first RSA meeting of the 2017-2018 academic year. With The SOAS Journal for Postgraduate Research aiming to showcase the talent and diverse research interests of SOAS research students, it was only natural to seek their cooperation on this endeavour. Feminist student activists often put their own female bodies on display to disrupt the disembodied “objective” thinking that still seemed to dominate the academy. The philosopher Theodor Adorno responded to one such action, the “bared breasts incident,” carried out by his radical students in Germany in 1969, in an essay, “Marginalia to Theory and Praxis.” In that essay, he defends himself against the students’ claim that he proved his lack of relevance to contemporary students when he failed to respond to the spectacle of their liberated bodies. He acknowledged that the protest movements seemed to offer thoughtful people a way “out of their self-isolation,” but ultimately, to replace philosophy with bodily spectacle would mean to miss the “infinitely progressive aspect of the separation of theory and praxis” (259, 266). Lisa Yun Lee argues that this separation continues to animate contemporary feminist debates, and that it is worth returning to Adorno’s reasoning, if we wish to understand women’s particular modes of theoretical ii insight in conversation with “grand perspectives” on cultural theory in the twenty-first century.

Also, with English hailed as the lingua franca and a language for possibilities and prosperity, more and more world citizens are drawn towards it, often at the cost of their native languages. While it is true that we are all staunchly moving towards one world and language uniformity ensures homogenization, yet it clashes with the principle of preserving linguistic diversity. This poses certain questions like how is the globalization phenomenon related to issues of languages, culture and identity. What will be the effect of language loss; what roles does the linguist have to play in the process of language survival; why is language preservation needed? This paper scrutinizes language specific issues in the wake of globalization. The issues dealt with here are: status of world language and their chances of survival; factors contributing towards language loss and language survival; effects of language loss and need for language preservation; suggested steps towards language preservation. Does Islamophobia really exist? Or is the hatred and abuse of Muslims being exaggerated to suit politicians' needs and silence the critics of Islam? The trouble with Islamophobia is that it is an irrational concept. It confuses hatred of, and discrimination against, Muslims on the one hand with criticism of Islam on the other. The charge of 'Islamophobia' is all too often used not to highlight racism but to stifle criticism. Islamophobia can generally be defined as unfounded fear of and hostility towards Islam. Such fear and hostility leads to discrimination against Muslim, exclusion of Muslim from mainstream political or social process, stereotyping, the presumption of guilt by association and hate crimes. This paper focuses on terrorism, and to be more precise, the issue of Islamophobia because of the misperception towards Islam. These issues become even more crucial when such phobia has led to a stress among the world community. People need to understand what Islam really meant, so that they would be clear that they cannot judge Islam by looking at the Muslim itself.     FEMINIST MEDIA STUDIES, 2016 VOL. 16, NO. 4, 610–630 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/14680777.2016.1193293 Post-postfeminism?: new feminist visibilities in postfeminist times Rosalind Gill Department of Sociology, City University, London, UK ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This article contributes to debates about the value and utility Postfeminism; neoliberalism; of the notion of postfeminism for a seemingly “new” moment feminism; media magazines marked by a resurgence of interest in feminism in the media and among young women. The paper reviews current understandings of postfeminism and criticisms of the term’s failure to speak to or connect with contemporary feminism. It offers a defence of the continued importance of a critical notion of postfeminism, used as an analytical category to capture a distinctive contradictory-but- patterned sensibility intimately connected to neoliberalism. The paper raises questions about the meaning of the apparent new visibility of feminism and highlights the multiplicity of different feminisms currently circulating in mainstream media culture—which exist in tension with each other. I argue for the importance of being able to “think together” the rise of popular feminism alongside and in tandem with intensified misogyny. I further show how a postfeminist sensibility informs even those media productions that ostensibly celebrate the new feminism. Ultimately, the paper argues that claims that we have moved “beyond” postfeminism are (sadly) premature, and the notion still has much to offer feminist cultural critics. By working through texts by Gregory of Nyssa, this dissertation fills out what fittingness and gratuity entail—what, that is, they do for beauty-seekers and beauty-talkers. After the historical set-up of the first chapter, chapter 2 considers fittingness and gratuity through Gregory’s doctrine of God because Beauty, for Gregory, is a name for God. That God is radically transcendent transforms (radicalizes) fittingness and gratuity away from a strictly Platonic vision of how they might function. Chapter 3 extends such radicalization by considering beauty in light of Christology and particularly in light of the Christological claims to invisibility, poverty, and suffering.

A host of perpetrators made reporters and photographers, even editors, fair game as there were murders, attacks, threats, and cases filed against them for defamation, sedition, and internet- related offences. It was a year in which two journalists were shot at point blank range and killed, and one was hacked to death as police stood by and did not stop the mob. The following statistics have been compiled from The Hoot’s Free Speech Hub monitoring: Ø 3 killings of journalists which can be clearly linked to their journalism Ø 46 attacks Ø 27 cases of police action including detentions, arrests and cases filed. Ø 12 cases of threats These are conservative estimates based on reporting in the English press. The major perpetrators as the data in this report shows tend to be the police and politicians and political workers, followed by right wing activists and other non-state actors Law makers became law breakers as members of parliament and legislatures figured among the perpetrators of attacks or threats. These cases included a minister from UP who threatened to set a journalist on fire, and an MLA from Chirala in Andhra Pradesh and his brother accused of being behind a brutal attack on a magazine journalist.
