LEZANT PARISH MAGAZINE ISSUE 114 AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2019 EDITOR: ROB PETCH TEL 01579 370151 EMAIL: [email protected] ADVERTISING and ACCOUNTS: Pam West TEL 01579 371167 EMAIL: [email protected] DISTRIBUTION: Jill Price TEL 01579 370835 EMAIL:[email protected] Cover picture : Remember the chestnut flowers from a couple of months back and Neil Burden’s explanation last month about the colour change showing they’d been pollinated? Well, now we have conkers swelling where once there were flowers. You can see the stalk which was the ‘support spire’ for the flowers: some of the baby conkers have fallen off, which is nature’s way of ensuring that the ones that do develop there will have enough nutrients to grow to a viable size in order to be successful seed. Perhaps there is a parallel here: too many people using up too much of the Earth’s resources means that some will die off prematurely. That sounds very harsh but I am thinking of course about the global heating which is being accelerated by our fossil fuel consumption: desertification and wildfires, sea level rise... Even people in this country are finding themselves with nowhere to go as their homes are swallowed by the sea. As this begins to happen more and more on a global scale and we see mass migration of people to avoid starvation and wars over water, what are we going to do... pull up the drawbridge? Change the way we live to make room? What would the Christian thing to do be? It will certainly make the current travails of Brexit seem like a storm in a teacup. What a dilemma. Anyone have some ideas? Please email them to me! WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO OUR STANDING STONES? Here’s a thing. One for the new Parish Archive group, perhaps. Did you know that there used to be a row of standing stones (technically, called an ‘alignment’) in the parish? As old as Stonehenge, as old as the pyramids. They were originally spotted in some high resolution RAF aerial photos. Yet they aren’t there now, because around 1980, the then owners of Greystone quarry found that they were in the way of quarrying works and bulldozed them to the edge of the field. Archaeological sacrilege! During a parish walk near the quarry some years back I was told by a past member of the parish council that the stones were still there, buried under some rubble at the side of the road, near the bungalows next to the quarry. We had a quick look over the hedge but couldn’t see them. So this is a plea: do you know where they are? Can we have them back, perhaps to put in a public open space and pointing at the solstice sunrise once again? I’m mentioning this because before long the quarry is going to swallow that road as it expands and those standing stones carved out over 5,000 years ago will end up in the crusher if we can’t get them back! A very good afternoon with delicious strawberries and, of course, the usual array of cakes. A relaxed afternoon for those who came with plenty friendship and a rather busier time for the chapel ladies who organised the Tea! See you again for next year’s Tea! The Church and Chapel are combining to have a stall at the Horticultural Show on the 10 th August with the theme The Fruit of the Spirit. Please take the time to come along and say hello and chat to Sheila and Richard and others who will be there to welcome you. There will be several activities for the children to enjoy together with photos showing how we have both occupied and enjoyed ourselves over recent years. Our Summer Sunday Lunch this year is on 25 th August when we will be offering our usual delicious lunch together with home made desserts – please come along and enjoy the food and the company. See advert on page 5. Our September charity coffee morning is in aid of Myeloma UK and will be organised by Leah Docherty and Ian Morrison. This is an excellent cause to support and we hope that lots of you will come along to the event and enjoy the coffee and the cake and excellent company as well as offering a donation to the charity. See ad on page 18. More to report in October! Jill P. ST. BRIOCHUS CHURCH, LEZANT Reverend Heather West had her Licensing Service (to be Priest in Charge of the Benefice of The Three Rivers and Altarnun with Bolventor) on the 26th June at St Martin’s Church, Lewannick. The Bishop of St Germans, the Right Reverend Dr Chris Goldsmith and the Archdeacon, the Venerable Audrey Elkington took part in the service which was attended by many other clergy and parishioners and friends from across the Benefice and beyond. Following the service, celebratory drinks and nibbles were enjoyed in the village hall. We have recently welcomed the Parish of Altarnun with Bolventor into the Benefice, in line with the reorganisation of the Deanery (Trigg Major). Hope this might be interesting! We will have more news on the arrival of the new Priest in Charge at Launceston later on. His Licensing Service is in August, so I’ll report back on that in October’s issue.
