Abstract The James N. Porter papers document Porter’s career in the disk drive and data storage industries, particularly his role as the founder and president of DISK/TREND, which published annual market study reports on the disk drive and data storage industry. Material dates from 1956 to 2010, with the bulk of material from 1970 to 2003. The majority of material in the collection consists of DISK/TREND’s profiles on companies active in the disk drive industry. A smaller portion of the collection contains material related to data storage industry conferences, including IDEMA’s DISKCON and DataStorage, two conferences Porter co-founded; storage industry market studies; Porter’s research files on various types of data storage technologies; records from his employment and consulting work outside of DISK/TREND; and unprocessed audiovisual material.

Biographical/Historical Note James (Jim) N. Porter was born October 3, 1931, in Sacramento, California. He received a bachelor’s degree in Advertising from San Jose State University.

Porter worked in marketing for the paper manufacturer Crown Zellerbach after the company received IBM’s RAMAC, the first computer to use a disk drive, in 1956. Impressed with the machine, Porter would show it off to office visitors, and it was after this experience around the RAMAC that his interest in drive technology took off. After Crown Zellerbach, Porter worked for Memorex from 1968 to 1971 in different marketing roles and as the manager of computer media product management. In 1971, Porter was hired as the director of marketing for Cartridge Television Inc., one of the first developers of home video cassette systems. He worked there until 1973, when he took the role of director of marketing for CMX Systems, a joint Memorex- CBS company that made and marketed computer-controlled videotape editing systems. Around this time, he also worked for Rockwell International.

In 1974, Porter started his own management consulting firm, working for various companies, including Memorex. In 1977, he founded the industry analyst firm DISK/TREND, which published annual market study reports on the disk drive and data storage industries. DISK/TREND was considered the industry standard for market studies, and Porter was in high demand to speak on panels and present his DISK/TREND reports at disk and storage conferences worldwide.

Porter was a founder and chairman of IDEMA (International Disk Drive Equipment and Materials Association), and was heavily involved in their annual DISKCON trade shows, both in the United States and in Asia. He also founded the DataStorage conference. Porter retired DISK/TREND in 1999. He continued speaking at conferences and shows until the end of his life. He died March 2, 2012.

Scope and Content of the Collection The James N. Porter papers contain records from Porter’s career in the disk drive and data storage industries, especially in his role as founder and president of DISK/TREND. The collection spans from 1956 to 2010 with the bulk of the collection ranging from 1970 to 2003, around the period of DISK/TREND’s active years.

The largest parts of the collection comprise DISK/TREND’s profiles on companies active in the disk drive industry. Porter filed and classified most of these companies as “manufacturers” (Series 1), but also kept separate files on “suppliers” (Series 5). The material in Series 1, “Disk drive manufacturer profiles,” was relatively more extensive and organized than other parts of the collection. For instance, each manufacturer profile includes DISK/TREND worksheets, which were used in Porter’s interviews with industry leaders and also in providing content for DISK/TREND publications.

Another significant part of the collection covers material that Porter collected and/or created from conferences, symposia, workshops, and other events taking place within the data storage industry. Two conferences that Porter co-founded and operated: DISKCON (run under IDEMA) and DataStorage, are heavily represented in this part of the collection.

The collection also holds storage industry market studies, which include reports from peer publications similar to DISK/TREND, analyst reports created for investment purposes, academic market studies authored under business schools, and a small amount of DISK/TREND reports. Porter’s research files on various types of data storage technologies are also held in this collection, along with records from his employment and consulting work outside of DISK/TREND. Lastly, there is a small amount of unprocessed audiovisual material.

Collection Contents Series 1, Disk drive manufacturer profiles, 1959-2010, bulk 1971-1999 This series contains DISK/TREND’s files on over 1,000 companies active in the data storage industry from 1959 to 2010, with the bulk of material from 1971 to 1999. Porter and other DISK/TREND employees organized each company profile using color-coded subcategories: DISK/TREND worksheets, general information, financial information, products-rigid, products- disk arrays, products-optical, products-optical library, products-flexible, products-flash, products- CD tower, and inactive (obsolete products). The first subcategory, “DISK/TREND worksheets,” primarily contains material authored by Porter and Robert H. Katzive, Vice President of DISK/TREND, for purposes of writing and organizing information included in DISK/TREND reports. Documents within DISK/TREND worksheets include checklists created for and during Porter’s interviews with storage companies; correspondence between Porter, Katzive, and disk drive company leaders; Porter and Katzive’s handwritten notes; and worksheets that track the different types of storage technologies each company manufactured. The second subcategory, “general information,” contains overviews and company backgrounders, articles from various publications that feature the company being profiled, press releases, and promotional material published by the storage manufacturers. “Financial information” includes annual reports, press releases relating to finance, and material relating to investment and shareholders. The remaining product-related DISK/TREND subcategories (listed above) focus on the different types of products sold by each company, with promotional material and press relating to each type of technology. The most common product subcategories were “products-rigid” and “products-disk arrays.” Porter made a distinction between disk drive “manufacturers” and “suppliers.” See Series 5, “Disk drive supplier profiles” for DISK/TREND’s material on companies that Porter classified as suppliers. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title with each company name as a title. Within the material for each company, separations between each subcategory were maintained. And within each subcategory, documents are ordered in Porter’s original reverse chronological order, with the most recently dated material appearing first.

Series 2, Conferences, courses, and presentations, 1977-2010 This series documents conferences, symposia, workshops, and other events related to data storage and other technical topics from 1977 to 2010. Porter attended most of these events as a member of the press, an analyst, or a speaker, and often as all three. The organization with the most material in this series is IDEMA, of which Porter was a founder and board member. There is a large amount of material from IDEMA’s U.S., Japan, and Asia-Pacific DISKCON conferences, plus a smaller number of items from other IDEMA symposia. In addition to presentations, proceedings, and programs, there is a good deal of administrative material related to the planning and operation of DISKCON, lists of attendees and speakers, and administrative material from various planning committees. There is also a large number of items from the DataStorage conference that Porter founded, including planning records, material from the conferences, presentations, and proceedings. Other conferences with a large amount of material include Comdex, Head/Media Technology Review, IIST, and Rothchild Technology Opportunity and Optical Drive and Media. Porter was a panelist or speaker at many of these events, and printed slides of his presentations are filed with the conferences at which they were presented. There are also a number of presentations based on Porter’s DISK/TREND Reports that do not appear to have been created for a particular conference or event; these are filed together. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title, and the folder titles are the names of the conference or course.

Series 3, Storage industry market studies, 1969-2012, bulk 1977-2003 This series contains market reports and research focused on various data storage industries including hard disk drives, floppy disks, optical memory, and peripheral storage devices. A small amount of these reports were authored by Porter under DISK/TREND, but the majority of this series was created by peer publications and newsletters similar to DISK/TREND in scope and audience. The publication with the largest amount of material in this series is Freeman Reports—a series of technical reports on data storage devices—with issues ranging from 1979 to 2007. Three other publications that are significantly represented are annual and quarterly TrendFOCUS market reports, Data Storage Review published by Business Research Team, and Rumors and Raw Data published by Business Research Consultants, Inc. Aside from data storage market reports published periodically to a general audience, some of these reports were written by market analysts and companies directly involved in data storage investments and acquisitions. Other market studies in this series were generated from academic work under various programs of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), University of Michigan Business School, the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University, and SCU Leavey School of Business (Santa Clara University). One item of interest is a poster published by Engage Capital and Coughlin Associates, which maps out prominent companies of the 2002 hard disk drive industry in a visual format. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title.

Series 4, Data storage background files, 1978-2010 This series consists of material Porter used while researching storage technology. Material dates from 1978 to 2010 and includes brochures, press releases, clippings, reports, presentations, articles, correspondence, periodicals, and handwritten notes. Research about optical storage and drives makes up a large portion of this series. Additional topics include disk arrays, disk history, flash memory, magnetic controllers and subsystems, and holographic storage, among others. Also included are records related to lawsuits involving William Lerach and tech companies; Porter was subpoenaed in these lawsuits to provide information he gathered for DISK/TREND. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title.

Series 5, Disk drive supplier profiles, 1976-2010 This series includes material related to disk drive suppliers that Porter researched for DISK/TREND’s published reports. Material dates from 1976 to 2010. See Series 1, “Disk drive manufacturer profiles” for DISK/TREND’s material on companies that Porter classified as manufacturers. Promotional material, press releases, correspondence about companies and products, articles, and specifications make up the bulk of the material. Companies of note include Fujifilm, Yamaha, Ampex, Imation, Maxell, Philips, Philips and DuPont Optical, Sony, and Verbatim. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title, and the folder titles are the names of the companies.

Series 6, Non-DISK/TREND employment and consulting, 1956-1986 This series contains material related to Porter’s work outside of DISK/TREND, including his consulting for and employment at other companies, from 1956 to 1986. The bulk of material is from Cartridge Television, IBM, and Memorex, and includes reports, market analyses and projections, notes, product development status reports, meeting minutes, planning and development records, personnel and human resources records, company overviews, annual reports, and sales and promotional material. Also included are records documenting Porter’s consulting work for Exxon, Data Electronics, BASF, General Systems International, Honeywell Bull, Xerox, Texas Instruments, Information Terminals Corporation, Newell Research Corporation, and CFI Memories. This series is arranged alphabetically by folder title.

Series 7, Unprocessed AV material, 1970-2002 This series consists of unprocessed audiovisual material from 1970 to 2002. Included are VHS tapes and a DVD; CDs; data backups stored on floppy disks and data cartridge tapes, some of which might contain digital text documents; audiocassettes containing conference proceedings from events such as Comdex '88, DataStorage '90, and OpticalStorage '90; and Cartrivision reels. There are also snapshots of Porter's disk drive exhibition. This series is unarranged.
