It does not exceed the prescribed word limit for the relevant Degree Committee. Nicholas Dixon November 2018 ii Thesis Summary The Activity and Influence of the Established Church in England, c. 1800-1837 Nicholas Andrew Dixon Pembroke College, Cambridge This thesis examines the various ways in which the Church of England engaged with English politics and society from c. 1800 to 1837. Assessments of the early nineteenth-century Church of England remain coloured by a critique originating in radical anti-clerical polemics of the period and reinforced by the writings of the Tractarians and Élie Halévy. It is often assumed that, in consequence of social and political change, the influence of a complacent and reactionary church was irreparably eroded by 1830.

  • “No Gretter Perile”: Over-Mighty Subjects and Fifteenth-Century Politics in Malory’S Morte Darthur
“No gretter perile”: Over-mighty Subjects and Fifteenth-Century Politics in Malory’s Morte Darthur Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Michael M. Baker, M.A. Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Karen A. Winstead, Advisor Richard Firth Green Ethan Knapp Copyright by Michael M. Baker 2013 Abstract Traditionally read as a deeply nostalgic text – one that looks back to Arthur’s Camelot as a Golden Age of English history and chivalry – Sir Thomas Malory’s Morte Darthur is, instead, a very contemporarily relevant text. Completed in 1469/70, at the mathematical center of the divisive Wars of the Roses (c. 1455-1485), Malory’s Morte considers problematic contemporary political issues that threaten the peace and stability of the realm. Chief among these are issues involving over-mighty subjects, identified by Sir John Fortescue in The Governance of England (c. 1471/75) as the greatest threat to fifteenth-century kings. Since K. B. McFarlane’s 1964 declaration that “only an undermighty ruler had anything to fear from overmighty subjects,” however, the over- mighty have been under-studied. It is important, though, when examining a text to consider the prevalent beliefs of its time; even if McFarlane’s statement is true, neither Fortescue nor Malory would have agreed with it. Malory’s Morte does not create perfect analogues to fifteenth-century persons or events (i.e., Lancelot is not the Kingmaker, the final battle near Salisbury is not Towton), but it does create many parallels to fifteenth-century political issues.

  • The Art of Thomas Hicks and Celebrity Culutre in Mid-Nineteenth-Century New York
THE ART OF THOMAS HICKS AND CELEBRITY CULUTRE IN MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY NEW YORK BY ©2010 Letha Clair Robertson Submitted to the graduate degree program in Art History and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Dr. Charles Eldredge, Chairperson Dr. David Cateforis Dr. Marni Kessler Dr. Chuck Berg Dr. Jonathan Earle Date Defended: 19 November 2010 The Dissertation Committee for Letha Clair Robertson certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: THE ART OF THOMAS HICKS AND CELEBRITY CULTURE IN MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY NEW YORK Dr. Charles Eldredge, Chairperson Date approved: 19 November 2010 ii ABSTRACT During the antebellum period, American audiences became fascinated, even obsessed, with celebrity. While celebrity was traditionally associated with fame and its classical ideals of virtue and honor, by the mid-nineteenth century these definitions began to shift as American audiences became enchanted by public personalities. The development of the mass media and the growth of the public relations industry fostered this new fascination. The invention of photography, and especially the inexpensive carte-de-visite, encouraged this interest as for the first time it allowed audiences to collect celebrity portraits cheaply. This posed a challenge for traditional portrait painters who wished to remain competitive in the new market of the celebrity image. This dissertation considers how mass media, photography, and celebrity culture affected traditional portraitists as exemplified through the career of Thomas Hicks (1816-90). Primarily active in New York City, Hicks integrated himself into artistic, political, and literary circles to acquire commissions.
