NGIA, 5935 S. 56th St., Suite B, Lincoln, NE 68516 or email to [email protected] We retain the right to refuse any advertisement or copy content deemed inappropriate or inconsistent with our goals and objectives to serve our members. 4 5 July/August 2016 TheVoice of the Nebraska Grocery Industry Executive Director’s Corner Approximately six years ago the Nebraska Association of Tobacco & Candy Distributors moved under the umbrella of the Nebraska Grocery Industry Association. The issues and concerns of the convenience store industry and distribution warehouses mirror those of the grocery industry. As a result we have successfully merged the two organizations and we enjoy an efficient, focused organization that represents and protects our interests. We thank those members who continue to support the organization that represents them and their business. Together we have accomplished so much! NGIA successfully fought off a tobacco By Kathy Siefken increase of $1.50 per pack during the 2016 legislative session. We also reduced the proposed Omaha cigarette tax from the initial increase of 65¢ per pack to 17¢ per pack. We were instrumental in passing legislation that prohibits cities from assessing additional taxes on food, fuel, liquor and tobacco. We have been a strong supporter of protecting our retailer’s ability to accept SNAP payments through letter writing, contact with our US Senators and Congressmen, and media articles. The 2017 Legislative Session will address additional retail and tobacco issues. We positively impact future legislators by contributing funds to those political candidates who support our vision and future. We also provide college scholarships that to applicants who are employees or immediate family members of employees of all dues-paying members. We are very proud of our success in the Nebraska Legislature, with regulatory agencies, and within the industry and we intend to continue to represent our industry into the future. But we need the support of all industry members to remain successful. We ask that you support NGIA through: 1. Participation in the events that are held, including the upcoming Hackers & Snackers Golf Extravaganza which is the fundraiser for the organization. This event will be held on Sept. 22 at Quarry Oaks Golf Club. 2. Maintaining NGIA as a dues paying member or joining the Association if you are not already a member. 3. Participation in the Annual Legislative Reception & Dinner in Lincoln on Jan. 19, 2017. This event provides an opportunity to network with your peers, catch up with old friends and make new friends, in addition to visiting with your state senator regarding issues that are important to you. 4. Contributions to the NGIA PAC which allows us to support those state senators who support business and who understand our industry. Details regarding all of the above can be found on the Association website at www.nebgrocery.com or you can contact the Association office at 800-433-6742. We look forward to working with you in the future and hope that you will consider sustaining or increasing your support of the organization that supports your business. • Wellness at Retail: the Continuing Story
Wellness at Retail: The Continuing Story Expanding the delivery of health and wellness services thru retail channels has been a long-term trend in the United States. In our last article, Wellness at Retail: An Introduction, we traced highlights of this trend, including: the evolution of the health food industry into mainline grocery, i.e. Whole Foods; the integration of traditional healthcare services into large format retail, i.e. the appearance of clinics in chains like Kroger and Target; and the collaboration of retailers and insurance companies in the promotion of healthy eating, i.e. Go365 by Walmart and Humana. Since then, this trend has continued and, like everything around us, been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Pharmacy, and grocery in particular, have emerged as cornerstone brick-and- mortar retail formats, compelled to protect employees while serving increased customer demand. These essential retail workers have emerged as frontline heroes, risking their lives by reporting to work, and the retailers have assumed leadership roles within their communities, in protecting the public by providing PPE to staff and requiring all shoppers to wear masks. Many retailers have initiated new health and wellness offerings or expanded existing programs during the current crisis. Major retailers like Walmart and CVS(1), as well as independents like SpartanNash(2), have assisted in providing testing. Online nutrition services are expanding rapidly as grocers, like ShopRite(3) and Stop & Shop(4), have added digital dietitians, nutrition coaching, recipe demonstrations and other services. And Weis Markets has taken it a step farther with the addition of a video-chat platform providing counseling on the management of chronic conditions, like diabetes and high blood pressure, along with other nutrition services.

For 12 days, participating SpartanNash stores and fuel centers will work with our store guests to raise money for our Special Olympics partners and the athletes that participate in training and athletic competition. Each store has a Special Olympics affiliate assigned to them – and 100 percent of all funds raised will go directly to that state’s Special Olympics partner at the conclusion of our retail scan campaign.
