  • IN VISUAL CULTURE Henrike Lehnguth, Docto
ABSTRACT Title of Document: INTO THE DARK CHAMBER OF TERROR: “THE WAR ON TERROR” IN VISUAL CULTURE Henrike Lehnguth, Doctor of Philosophy, 2011 Directed By: Professor Nancy Struna, Department of American Studies This dissertation analyzes fiction film representations of the “global war on terror” under special consideration of the ways in which visual representations have mediated the space that novelist J. M. Coetzee so aptly called the “dark chamber” and that I, building on Coetzee, term the dark chamber of terror where, away from bare view, ethical norms, and the regulatory structures of the law, the state and rivaling non-state powers like the al-Qaeda organization exert unchecked control and (lethal) violence over the bodies of those whom they perceive as ‘problem’ or ‘enemy’ subjects. I approach the visual representations of the dark chamber of terror in fiction film with an argument that they engage in different types of what I term visioning practices that each emerge out of a different relationship between the actual violent event that took place and its initial visual mediation in nonfictional terms. I differentiate between en-visioning practices , where fictional images fill the visual void left by the absence of actual recorded images from the dark chamber; re- visioning practices , where fictional images rewrite actual visual recordings of the dark chamber from an oppositional standpoint that strives to undermine the original narratives and meanings; and dis-visioning practices, an ambivalent form of re- visioning, where fictional images engage the dark chamber and prior visual representations of the dark chamber but negate their full implication.

  • A Mighty Heart
A Mighty Heart A new movie that takes its theme from our age of terrorism and successfully personalizes it is A Mighty Heart, based on the kidnapping incident of Wall Street Journal correspondent Daniel Pearl, who fell into the hands of Islamic fundamentalists in Pakistan in 2002, and his wife Mariane’s search for him. What makes the project intriguing is that it is directed by Englishman Michael Winterbottom, one of world’s most protean filmmakers. Winterbottom will try anything and even knows the territory, having made last year’s documentary Road to Guantanamo in Pakistan and Afghanistan, and having traced a South Asian immigration route also in In This World, a terrific docu-drama made in 2003. Winterbottom’s presence and eclectic taste (he also co-wrote the movie) makes this picture much more than a simple star turn for the over-hyped Angelina Jolie. In fact, Winterbottom uses Jolie—playing Pearl’s wife Mariane—as an actress and not a “Star.” Better yet, the movie is not all about her but is, in fact, mostly a fine police procedural set in a rough-and-tumble Karachi, Pakistan, filmed in a fluid, fast documentary style that wholly convinces. The film dispenses with little set-up and gets right to the kidnapping of Pearl (Dan Futterman), the Wall Street Journal man who was due to leave Pakistan right before he was taken. Then the director keeps the pace pulsing with strong and confident intercutting between the anxious home where Mariane Pearl and her support team is staying and the local police headquarters where a dogged captain (a splendid Irrfan Khan) and his team run down leads on the perpetrators.

a mighty heart torrent download A Mighty Heart. A Mighty Heart is a movie starring Angelina Jolie, Dan Futterman, and Irrfan Khan. Mariane Pearl embarks on a frantic search to locate her journalist husband, Daniel, when he goes missing in Pakistan. On January 23, 2002, Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl is to fly from Karachi to Dubai with his pregnant wife, Mariane, also a reporter. On the day before, with great care, he has arranged an interview in a café with an Islamic fundamentalist cleric. When Danny doesn't return, Mariane initiates a search. Pakistani police, American embassy personnel, and the FBI examine witnesses, phone records, e-mails, and hard drives. Who has him? Where is he? There's also the why: because of U.S. abuse of prisoners at Guantanamo, because of a history of Journal cooperation with the CIA, because Pearl is a Jew? Through it all, Mariane is clearheaded, direct, and determined. Downloaded 2211 times 10/22/2018 1:59:06 PM. Director. Tech specs. Movie Reviews. Telling the truth is generally considered to be the first step on the path to righteousness. It brings redemption to some and relieves the guilt of others. Many people have a hard time accepting the truth when faced with it. That difficulty in dealing is perhaps the main reason some run far away from the truth altogether. Given how troubling facing the truth can be in everyday reality, being subjected to it in celluloid on the big screen is a very hard sell. This is even more relevant when the film in question is based on an event that was played out to the point of emotional exhaustion in the media.

  • Mighty Heart, Mightier Spotlight Bigger Than Any Single Tragedy, Angelina Jolie Kidnaps Daniel Pearl's Movie by J
Film Mighty Heart, Mightier Spotlight Bigger than any single tragedy, Angelina Jolie kidnaps Daniel Pearl's movie by J. Hoberman June 12th, 2007 12:00 AM A skilled actor vanishes into a role; a movie star appropriates it. As presence trumps character, the star personifies Brecht's alienation effect, and whatever its ostensible subject, the movie becomes a vehicle—the latest installment in an ongoing career or, in the case of a great star, a public myth. Angelina Jolie is the major alienation effect in A Mighty Heart, although she's not the only one. The hectic pizzazz with which hired gun Michael Winterbottom directs this tale of terrifying terrorism is another distraction—and so is the movie's true-life premise. An addendum to last year's 9/11 movies and a sequel of sorts to Winterbottom's Road to Guantánamo, A Mighty Heart is based on one of the most disturbing events of the 9/11 aftermath—namely the case of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, abducted by jihadi extremists in Karachi and, five weeks later, brutally executed on video, in part because he was a Jew. A mondo-global, insanely urgent, staccato procedural in which each shot arrives like a bulletin, A Mighty Heart is characterized by sensational, quasi-documentary location work in swarming Karachi and a sense of near-constant frenzy. Pearl's briskly staged abduction sends the movie into controlled chaos. The crime triggers a dense montage of flashbacks and action cuts, accompanied by head-spinning techno-babble—a manhunt with a half-dozen agencies busily tracking e-mails and cell-phone calls.

Merri Shaffer Journalism in the Spotlight: An analysis of Hollywood's portrayal of the journalist in American films By: Merri Shaffer Cinema has an incredible power. It holds a broad, flexible role in the vast majority of societies and cultures. It can be used as a soapbox. It can be purely as an experiment of art. It can be used to entertain, educate, inspire and raise awareness, as well as be a tool of propaganda, escapism or just art. Along with literature, music and paintings, films have always had a complementary relationship with society - able both to affect it and reflect it. They create an investment in societal concepts, opening people up to issues and views.

He didn’t represent a country or a flag, just the pursuit of truth. He was there to hold up a mirror and force people to look at themselves. What better way is there to respect humanity?” – Mariane Pearl In the 5 years since Daniel Pearl’s death, nearly 230 journalists have been killed in the line of duty. On January 23, 2002, Mariane Pearl’s world changed forever. Her husband Daniel, South Asia Bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal, was researching a story on shoe bomber Richard Reid. The story drew them to Karachi where a go-between had promised access to an elusive source. As Danny left for the meeting, he told Mariane he might be late for dinner. He never returned. In the face of death, Danny’s spirit of defiance and his unflinching belief in the power of journalism led Mariane to write about his disappearance, the intense effort to find him and his eventual murderer in her memoir A Mighty Heart: The Brave Life and Death of My Husband Danny Pearl.
