DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/ah.296 RESEARCH ARTICLE Buildings for Bodies of Work: The Artist Museum After the Death and Return of the Author Maarten Liefooghe Critiques of the cult of artists, life-and-work narratives, and the authority of authors over the meaning of their works not only unsettle the conventions of literary and art historical studies. They also challenge the importance of the artist museum and its architecture. Adopting Roland Barthes’ discussions of the ‘death’ and ‘return of the author’ of the late 1960s and early 1970s as a critical lens, this article examines how the architecture of artist museums reflects and contributes to the discursive construction of the resilient figure of the artist-author. To do so, the article compares the cultist make-up of the 19th- century Thorvaldsen Museum-Mausoleum (opened in 1848) with the resolutely work-centred museums of Van Gogh (1973) and Roger Raveel (1999). The architecture of the last two examples is significantly different, however. The Van Gogh Museum seemingly negates its monographic orientation, while the Raveel Museum amends a white cube logic with a reserved interpretation of artistic individuality and site-boundedness. Parallel to the institutional interpretation of a museum’s monographic mission, and the curators’ representation of the artist-life-work nexus in exhibitions, architecture is yet another element in a museum’s assemblage of an artist presented as a dead or revived author to its visitors. -

KUNSTLEX juni 2020: TM Wolthers KUNSTLEX Udarbejdet af Anette Wolthers, 2020 Wolthers KUNSTLEXTM er udarbejdet i forbindelse med min research og skrivning af bogen: Kvindelige kunstnere i Odsherred gennem 100 år, publiceret af Odsherreds Kunstmuseums og Malergårdens Venner og Museum Vestsjælland i 2020. Bogen, der er på 248 sider, har også bidrag af museumsinspektør Jesper Sejdner Knudsen og formand for Venneforeningen Alice Faber. Bogen kan købes på de enkelte museer i Museum Vestsjælland eller kan bestilles på: [email protected] eller telefon 2552 8337. Den koster 299 kr plus forsendelsesomkostninger (ca. 77 kr.) Der var ikke plads i bogen til at alle mine ’fund og overvejelser’. Derfor har jeg samlet nogle af disse, så interesserede kan få adgang til denne viden i bredden og dybden, samt gå med ad de tangenter, der kan supplere bogens univers. Researcharbejdet til bogen Kvindelige kunstnere i Odsherred gennem 100 år er foregået 2016‐2019, og i denne proces opstod ideen om at lave mine mere eller mindre lange skrivenoter om et til et kunstleksikon. Så tænkt så gjort. Eske Kath Arena Eske Kath Arena
ESKE KATH ARENA ESKE KATH ARENA Arena is the chosen title for Danish artist Eske Kath’s second solo show with the gallery in Los Angeles. This new body of work will examine Kath’s interest in the forces of destruction and rebirth and the tension as an artist between chaos and control. Kath is painting on multiple surfaces for this show. Several pieces are painted directly onto raw linen wherein Kath has drawn compositional rules as the basis for his figuration. Foreground and background change position, and visible bits of linen and sketch lines become part of the finished work. The pattern of woven linen is exposed in these pieces, suggesting patterns of sand. As in all of Kath’s work, the single-family house is again depicted, in this work partially immersed in tides of (linen) sand. There are also paintings on blackboards, with houses in similar states of submergence by the ashen surface of the boards. Some pieces find houses in flight; against the dark surface of the blackboards suggestive of deep space. The surfaces of hard-bound books are also subjects of composition. Eske Kath (b. 1975, Denmark) studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Artist in Copenhagen, DK, graduating in 2003. In 2009, Kath was commissioned to paint a chamber ceiling in the Crown Prince of Denmark’s Amalienborg Palace. Kath’s work has been exhibited internationally, including Denmark, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Oslo, Frankfurt and Vienna. He is represented by Galerie Mikael Andersen in Copenhagen and Berlin, by Judith Charles Gallery in New York, and by Charlie James Gallery in Los Angeles. -
The Brewing Magnate's Forgotten Treasures
The Brewing Magnate’s Forgotten Treasures Friday March 2nd marks Carl Jacobsen’s 170th birthday with the opening of the exhibition, “From Buddha to the Baroque”. This lifts the veil from the brewing magnate’s unknown collections which contain many surprises. Admission on opening day will be free of charge. It was with Carlsberg beer that Carl Jacobsen put Denmark on the world map but he was also a passionate collector of art. Today he is known especially for Northern Europe’s largest collection of ancient art, which can be seen at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. With the exhibition ”From Buddha to the Baroque” the Glyptotek has been going through its own storage magazines and those of the National Gallery of Denmark, the National Museum of Denmark and the Thorvaldsen Museum on the hunt for Jacobsen’s hidden or forgotten treasures. On display for the first time in a century Now for the first time the public can experience examples of the full range of Jacobsen’s enormous collections under one roof. The exhibition will present more than 100 works, including statues of Buddha from Asia, Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, ancient Greek stone tools, medals and much, much more. Several of these collections have not been on view for a century: they are works of high quality, which, for the most part are unknown to the public. Among the treasures are a c 800 year-old Syrian “hand grenade”, a two-metre-high gilded statue of Buddha from Japan and the largest collection of obsidian blades outside Greece. Carl Jacobsen – a brewing magnate with a collector’s passion Carl Jacobsen bought his first work of art when he was only eight years old – a drawing by the Danish painter Martinus Rørbye. -

GANYMEDE BY BERTEL THORVALDSEN TREASURE FROM THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ICELAND CULTURE HOUSE HVERFISGATA 5 JUNE 2019 – 31 MAY 2020 Day and Night Originals made in Rome 1815 Biscuit, Size variable Hólavellir cemetery, Reykjavík The bas-reliefs Day and Night, made by Thorvaldsen in Rome in 1815, are undoubtedly the artist‘s most popular bas-reliefs, widely seen on gravestones in Icelandic churchyards. At the Thorvaldsen Museum the two pieces hang as a pair, as if to symbolise the two phases of the day, and also life and death. Night is depicted as a winged female figure or angel with her head bent and eyes closed, holding two sleeping infants (sleep and death) in her embrace. In the background an owl, the bird of the night, flies towards the observer. The ambiance is peaceful. Day is also a winged female figure, but now embodying strength and movement: Aurora, goddess of the dawn, strews roses on the earth as she glances over her shoulder at the guardian of the light who accom- panies her, holding up a flaming torch to symbolise the sun and light. In the Hólavellir cemetery, other reliefs by Thorvaldsen may also be seen on grave- Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) stones, such as images from the baptismal font of Reykjavík Cathedral. Sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844) was one of the most renowned artists in Europe of his time. He sought inspiration in the classical art of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, and is regarded as one of the leading exponents of neoclassical sculpture, together with Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. -
