i Stadiums of Status: Civic Development, Race, and the Business of Sports in Atlanta, Georgia, 1966-2019 By Joseph Loughran Senior Honors Thesis History University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill May 1, 2020 Approved: ___________________________________ Dr. Matthew Andrews, Thesis Advisor Dr. William Sturkey, Reader i Acknowledgements I could not have completed this thesis without the overwhelming support from my mother and father. Ever since I broached the idea of writing a thesis in spring 2019, they not only supported me, but guided me through the tough times in order to create this project. From bouncing ideas off you to using your encouragement to keep pushing forward, I cannot thank the both of you enough. I would also like to thank my advisor, Dr. Matthew Andrews, for his constant support, guidance, and advice over the last year. Rather than simply giving feedback or instructions on different parts of my thesis, our meetings would turn into conversations, feeding off a mutual love for learning about how sports impact history. While Dr. Andrews was an advisor for this past year, he will be a friend for life. Thank you to Dr. Michelle King as well, as her guidance throughout the year as the teacher for our thesis class was invaluable. Thank you for putting up with our nonsense and shepherding us throughout this process, Dr. King. This project was supported by the Tom and Elizabeth Long Excellence Fund for Honors administered by Honors Carolina, as well as The Michel L. and Matthew L. Boyatt Award for Research in History administered by the Department of History at UNC-Chapel Hill.

  • Post World War II Developments of Georgia (1945-1970)
SS8H10: The student will evaluate key post-World War II developments of Georgia from 1945 to 1970. a. Analyze the impact of the transformation of agriculture on Georgia’s growth. b. Explain how the development of Atlanta, including the roles of mayors William B. Hartsfield and Ivan Allen, Jr., and major league sports, contributed to the growth of Georgia. c. Discuss the impact of Ellis Arnall. Agricultural Transformation After World War II During the war years, many people had moved away from farms to work in wartime industries. This led to a significant growth of cities. Synthetic fabrics such as rayon and nylon were introduced, the demand for cotton fell. Peanuts, soybeans, and corn were later planted in place of cotton. Agricultural Transformation After World War II Poultry became an important source of income for farmers. The average size of a farm in Georgia in 1940 was 110 acres. Georgia’s population was rural and 34% was urban. By 1970, 60% of Georgia’s population lived in the cities, and 40% was rural. Development of Atlanta Returning veterans were able to attend college on the G.I. Bill or to buy houses. Enrollment in colleges & universities soared, and the suburbs (residential areas around cities) sprang up. Businesses continued to move into the state. Georgia’s mild climate and low tax rates lured many northern companies to the area. Development of Atlanta As the state’s economy diversified, more people moved into the state-especially to Atlanta. By 1954, some 800 new industries had appeared in Atlanta, and almost 1200 national corporations had Atlanta offices.

ANNEX I: Literature study precedent Olympics (1992-2008) Figure A. geographical locations and dates of the five preceding Olympic Games Structure of case analysis In figure A the geographical locations and dates of all five preceding Olympic Games are illustrated. Annex I consists of five case analysis which helped to extract lessons from five Olympic processes. All five cases are divided into the four strategic activities by Mintzberg (1997) and thereby after each subparagraph the relation to the model by Daamen (2010) is given by indicating (in cursive grey style) one or more distinct resources in an urban area development process. The strategic model helps to provide the case analyses with a framework to understand, evaluate and compare all processes to extract some valuable lessons. These lessons are the result of positive and negative experience of one or more cases. By doing so the lessons can be better applied in different contexts, thus are more generic applicable.
