Enclosed is a reply form which includes a ballot representing the final slate of candidates for the 1989 Board of Directors election. A short biographical sketch of each candidate has been prepared to assist you in making your decision. You may also nominate up to three individuals for the 1990 Board elections.

At the Membership Meeting, please present your ballot card for admission. If you do not have a ballot card with you when you come to the Membership Meeting, your name will be checked against the TransAfrica membership list. If you decide to mail your ballot to the national office, please do so by June 6, 1989.

Only current members are eligible to attend the Membership Meeting, nominate candidates for the Board of Directors, and/or vote for Board members. If your membership has expired, please use the enclosed form to renew it.

HARRY BEIAFONTE -- Artist, Producer, and Human ~ights Activist. Mr. Belafonte has a long record of corrmitment and service to improving the conditions of oppressed people around the ~rld. He was named to the Board of Directors of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and has been Chairman of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Merrorial Fund. He was appointed by President Kennedy and reappointed by President Johnson to the Advisory Cornnittee of the Peace Corps. He has contributed significantly to the education of many African students seeking an education in the United States. Arrong his many other accomplishments, Mr. Belafonte has played an Lrnportant role in the Free South Africa Movement. Be currently serves as UNICEF Special Ambassador. QIARLE.5 COBB -- Executive Director of the United Church of Christ Canm.ission for Racial Justice. Or. Cobb has brought a visible black presence to the denomination. His many accomplishments include being the first African-Arrerican to run for mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts, and serving as co-founder and past President of the National Conference of Black Churchmen. He is a recipient of the NAACP award for Outstanding Carmunity Service, frequently lectures on university campuses, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Black United Fund and the Congressional Black Caucus' "International Rela±.ions" and "Legislative Support" Brain Trusts. URI'LAND COX - Vice President, Goverrurent Affairs, U.S. International Cultural and Trade Center Carrnission. Mr. Cox is former Special Assistant to Mayor Barry, responsible for developing a comprehensive program for international business and trade for the District of Columbia. He has extensive background as an organizer and served as Secretary-Geileral of the Sixth Pan-African Congress. He also ~rked with SNCC in the 1960s, with labor unions, and as a comnunity organizer in Alabama and Mississippi. His diverse background includes ~rking as Co-Director of the Emergency Fund for Southern Africa, teaching Black Studies at the college level, and researching and monitoring U.S. policy with the Center for National Security Studies.

RONl'.LD V. DEI.LUMS CD-CA) - - Congressrran, United States House of Representatives. Currently serving his tenth term of office, Rep. Dellums is Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, Chair of the House Armed Services Subcorrmittee on Research and Developrrent, and a rrernber of the Defense Policy Panel. Throughout his House career, Mr. Dellums has been a leader in the Congressional effort to terminate U.S. support of the racist regime in South Africa. Mr. Dellums has also been on the forefront of legislative struggles for social and economic justice, and was the principal initiator of the Congressional Black Caucus's "Quality of Life" Budget.

RICHARD GORDON HATCHER -- President, ~ichard Gordon Hatcher and Associates. Richard Hatcher was Mayor of Gary, Jndian~ from 1967 to 1987. Mr. Hatcher has been a member of the governing bodies of some of the nation's leading civil rights and urban­ interest organization, including U.S. Conference of Mayors, National Conference of Black Mayors, National Urban Coalition, and National Conference of Locally Elected Black Officials. Mr. Hatcher represented the United States at the funeral of Mzee Jano Kenyatta, first President of Kenya. He has been the recipient of many awards and honors and has published a numl;er of important articles. WILLARD JOHNSON -- Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Johnson's academic VJOrk dealing with p::>litical and economic development processes in both African and American COITU11unities reflects a basic interest in the em90werment and advancement of victimized peoples. Dr. Johnson has worked with rrany community, public service, and professional organizations. He was one of the founders and a mernber of the Board of Directors of the African Heritage Studies Association and Association of Concerned African Scholars and was appointed to the U.S. National Carmission for UNESCO for two terms. He has a distinguished record of fellowships and research awards and has published widely on African and foreign affairs topics.

WILLIAM LUCY -- International Secretary-Treasurer, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO. Mr. Lucy holds the second highest off ice of the more than one million member AFSCME. Prior to his election, he served as Executive Assistant to the AFSCME President. Active in his union for rrore than twenty years, Mr. Lucy also serves on the Board of Directors of the African-American Institute, Americans for Derrocratic Action, and the National Black United Fund. He is also a me..'llber of the National Leadership Conference on Civil Rights and several other labor and co!TU11unity organizations. Mr. Lucy is a founder and President of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU). PERCY ELLIS SUTIDN -- Air Force Officer, Veteran, Attorney, and Businessrran. A two­ term member of the State T.egislature and Chief Elected Official of the Borough of for almost 12 years, Percy Sutton is former President of the New York NA.ACP, a founder and first Co-Chairrran of the National Council of Black Elected Officials, a founder of the Joint Center for Political Studies, and a founding member of the Board of Directors of PUSH. Mr. Sutton is a long-time Pan-Africanist and ·activist in the African Freedom Movement.

JAMES TURNER -- Associate Professor, Cornell University. Mr. Turner is a tenured Associate Professor of Afro-American Studies and founder and former Director of the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University. He is a member of the Arnerican Scx::iological Association, Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History, and National Conference of Black Political Scientists. He is also a member of the Executive Board of the African Heritage Studies Association .and a member of the Overseas Liaison Committee of the American Council of Education. Mr. Turne~ has published in several of the m:i.jor black professional journals and has traveled widely in Africa and the Caribbean.

W\XINE WATERS -- Assemblywom:i.n, California T.egislature. Assemblywom:i.n Waters was the first woman in California history to be elected to chair the Assembly Dem:x::ratic Caucus. Appointed in 1985 to the newly created Assembly Public Investments, Finance and Bonded Indebtedness Ccmnittee, Ms. Waters presented to the Governor a bill requiring state pension funds to cease investing in businesses which had investments in South Africa. A legislative leader who is recognized nationally, Ms. Waters serves on the Board of Directors of "Ms." and "Essence" m:i.gazines, the Council of State Governments, the Lupus Foundation of America, and the National Women's Political Caucus.

ROBERT L. WHITE -- President, National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees (NAPFE). .A labor leader and civil rights activist, Mr. White serves as a director of the NAACP Special Contribution Fund, Air Atlanta, the Industrial Bank of Washington, and National Coalition on Black Voter Participation and Voter Education Project. He is also Vice Chair for Finance of the National Black Leadership Roundtable and a member of the International Sp::>nsors Council of Howard University, the International Platform Association, and the Advisory Board of the United Bank of Washington.
