For the second year running, Manchester City FC and FC Barcelona meet in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League – with the English side hoping for a different outcome than 12 months ago when Barcelona won 4-1 on aggregate. • The clubs have common ground beyond last season's encounter. City's squad features Spaniards Jesús Navas and along with six other players signed from Spanish football including Yaya Touré, recruited from Barcelona in 2010. Additionally, they have a director of football, Txiki Begiristain, who knows Barcelona better than most. • This is only City's second appearance in the round of 16, but for Barcelona it is the 11th in a row. Their record at this stage over the past decade is eight wins and two defeats. The Azulgrana have qualified for the quarter-finals in each of the last seven seasons. Previous meetings • The teams met for the first time in a competitive fixture last term. Barcelona won the first leg in Manchester 2-0, Lionel Messi (penalty) and Daniel Alves scoring. Messi and Alves struck again in a 2-1 second-leg victory, sandwiching Vincent Kompany's goal. City had a man sent off in both games: first Martín Demichelis, then Pablo Zabaleta. • The lineups in Manchester on 18 February 2014 were: Manchester City: Hart, Zabaleta, Kompany, Demichelis, Clichy, Touré, Fernandinho, Navas (Nasri 58), Silva, Kolarov (Lescott 58), Negredo (Džeko 74). Barcelona: Valdés, Alves, Piqué, Mascherano, Alba, Xavi, Busquets, Fàbregas (Sergi Roberto 86), Alexis Sánchez (Neymar 74), Messi, Iniesta. • Barcelona were the visitors on 10 August 2003 for City's inaugural match in a stadium built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Nicolas Anelka and Trevor Sinclair scored either side of Javier Saviola for Barcelona, who featured Xavi Hernández in their starting XI and Andrés Iniesta as a substitute. • Touré played against a City team including Pablo Zabaleta when they won 1-0 at Barcelona in a pre-season friendly in August 2009. Match background Manchester City • City reached the last 16 on the back of an impressive escape act in Group E. They had taken only two points from their first four fixtures but then beat FC Bayern München and AS Roma to snatch second place. • Their last-gasp 3-2 comeback victory over Bayern on matchday five was just their third win in their last ten European home fixtures. • City's home record against Spanish clubs is W2 D2 L1. Sergio Agüero has scored in his last two home games for City against Liga visitors – the 1-1 draw with Real Madrid CF (2012/13) and 2-1 success over Villarreal CF (2011/12). • While City are seeking to make the quarter-finals for the first time, in Manuel Pellegrini they have a coach who has been there with Villarreal (2006, 2009) and Málaga CF (2012). Barcelona • Four-time European champions Barcelona are pursuing an eighth successive quarter-final appearance. • Barcelona lost their first away match in this campaign at Paris Saint-Germain (2-3) but subsequently won at AFC Ajax (2-0) and APOEL FC (4-0). • The Blaugrana's victory at City last year was their first in five trips to Manchester – the first four were at against Manchester United FC. It was also their first success on English soil since a 3-1 UEFA Champions League final triumph over United at Wembley in May 2011. • Barcelona's record away to English opposition is W7 D8 L14. Coach and player links • During nine seasons coaching in with Villarreal, Real Madrid and Málaga, Pellegrini managed only four victories against Barcelona. The Chilean lost both Liga 'clásicos' as Madrid coach in 2009/10 (0-1 a, 0-2 h) and his overall record against Barcelona reads P22 W4 D4 L14. • City's director of football, Begiristain, filled the same role at Barcelona between 2003 and 2010. He was a member of the Blaugrana's 1992 European Cup-winning squad and also landed four Liga titles, the European Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Super Cup. • During three campaigns with Barcelona (2007–10), Touré made 74 Liga outings and scored four goals, winning two

8 Manchester City FC - FC Barcelona Tuesday 24 February 2015 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester league championships and the 2009 UEFA Champions League. • Zabaleta spent three years at Barcelona's city rivals RCD Espanyol (2005–08) and featured in four Liga derbies (W0 D2 L2). • Agüero hit five goals in ten Liga games versus Barcelona for Club Atlético de Madrid (2006–11). His first home match against Barcelona ended in a 6-0 defeat in May 2007. • Frank Lampard claimed three goals in ten appearances against Barcelona as a Chelsea FC player, beating them in the 2011/12 semi-finals and 2004/05 round of 16, but losing in the 2008/09 semi-finals and 2005/06 round of 16. • David Silva faced Claudio Bravo when his Spain side – also including Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Iniesta – had their 2014 FIFA World Cup elimination sealed by a 2-0 reverse to Chile. Bravo's Chile subsequently went out on penalties to a Brazil team containing City's Fernandinho as well as Neymar and Alves. • Luis Suárez struck both Uruguay goals past Joe Hart in the 2-1 victory that ousted England from the 2014 World Cup. With Liverpool FC, Suárez scored once in six games against City (W2 D3 L1). • Gaël Clichy was an unused Arsenal FC substitute in the 2006 UEFA Champions League final defeat by Barcelona. Clichy and Samir Nasri later played in Arsenal sides eliminated by Barcelona in 2009/10 and 2010/11. • Navas lined up alongside Alves and Adriano in the Sevilla FC team that overcame Barcelona 3-0 in the 2006 UEFA Super Cup. • Gerard Piqué spent four years in Manchester as a United player from 2004–08, making 23 appearances but never facing City. Match facts Manchester City • Agüero, Clichy, Edin Džeko and Zabaleta are all a booking away from a ban. Touré completes a three-match suspension. • City have played 13 games since the end of the group stage, their record reading: W7 D4 L2. • The Citizens' 4-1 win at Stoke City FC on 11 February was their first victory in six matches in all competitions. • Agüero registered twice against Stoke, ending a six-game scoring drought. He also converted a second-minute penalty in Saturday's 5-0 win against Newcastle United FC. • Saturday's clean sheet was City's first in 11 fixtures in all competitions, since a 3-0 triumph over Crystal Palace FC on 20 December. • January signing Wilfried Bony started every match – scoring two goals, both in the quarter-finals against Algeria – as Ivory Coast won the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea. He made his City debut as a second-half substitute against Newcastle. • Touré was also ever-present for Ivory Coast, his one goal coming in the semi-finals against DR Congo. The Stoke game was the only match City won during his absence. UEFA Champions League squad changes • In: Wilfried Bony (Swansea City AFC) • Out: Stevan Jovetić, Matija Nastasić (FC Schalke 04, loan) Barcelona • Barcelona have won 13 of their 16 games in all competitions since matchday six, drawing one and losing two, including Saturday's 1-0 loss at home to Málaga CF. That was Barcelona's second Camp Nou reverse of the season, equalling the mark for each of the last two seasons; they have not lost three times at home since 2008/09. • Before the weekend the Blaugrana had won their last 11 fixtures, since losing 1-0 to Real Sociedad de Fútbol on 4 January. • The Catalan club defeated SD Huesca (12-1 on aggregate), Elche CF (9-0) and Club Atlético de Madrid (4-2) en route to the Copa del Rey semi-finals, where they lead Villarreal CF 3-1 after the home first leg. The return is on 4 March. • Messi registered his 23rd Liga hat-trick, equalling Cristiano Ronaldo's record, as Barcelona beat Levante UD 5-0 at home on 15 February on the occasion of his 300th top-flight appearance for the club. • The Argentina striker has scored 14 goals – including another hat-trick, against RC Deportivo La Coruna on 18 January – in 2015. • Thomas Vermaelen is out for the rest of the season, while Douglas is a doubt for the first leg because of a torn thigh

12 Manchester City FC - FC Barcelona Tuesday 24 February 2015 - 20.45CET (19.45 local time) Match press kit City of Manchester Stadium, Manchester Head coach Manuel Pellegrini Date of birth: 16 September 1953 Nationality: Chilean Playing career: CF Universidad de Chile Coaching career: CF Universidad de Chile, CD Palestino (three times), Chile Under-20, CD O'Higgins, CD Universidad Católica, LDU de Quito, CA San Lorenzo de Almagro, CA River Plate, Villarreal CF, Real Madrid CF, Málaga CF, Manchester City FC • The former centre-back began his coaching career in 1988 with the sole club of his playing days, Universidad de Chile, before spending the next 16 years working with sides in Chile, Ecuador and Argentina. • Took over at Villarreal in 2004, guiding them to third place in the Liga in his debut season and securing a place in the UEFA Champions League for the first time. His side also reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup. • The following campaign, Villarreal defied expectations by reaching the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, losing 1-0 on aggregate to Arsenal FC. Guided team to second place in the 2007/08 Liga, a club record, and the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals the following season, again knocked out by Arsenal. • Joined Real Madrid on 2 June 2009, the Merengues winning a then club record 96 points in the Liga but still finishing second behind FC Barcelona, prompting Pellegrini's dismissal in May 2010. That November he succeeded Jesualdo Ferreira as coach of Málaga and in the following campaign oversaw a fourth-placed league finish, the club's best ever. • In an echo of his feats with Villarreal, he then took the Andalusian team through UEFA Champions League qualifying and all the way to the quarter-finals. In summer 2013, joined Manchester City on a three-year deal and won his first European silverware in his debut season with the and League Cup. Luis Enrique Date of birth: 8 May 1970 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Real Sporting de Gijón, Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona Coaching career: FC Barcelona B, AS Roma, RC Celta de Vigo, FC Barcelona • Known for his versatility, Luis Enrique spent the bulk of his playing career with Spain's two most successful clubs having started out at hometown side Sporting Gijón. • Won the Liga and Copa del Rey with Madrid and Barcelona − whom he surprisingly joined on a free transfer from the Merengues in 1996 − and the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Super Cup at the Camp Nou, where he played under, among others, Sir Bobby Robson, Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard. • A scorer of 12 goals in 57 appearances for Spain and an Olympic gold medallist on home soil in 1992, Enrique moved into coaching with Barcelona B in 2008, succeeding his former Azulgrana team-mate Josep Guardiola. • Appointed coach of Roma in June 2011 but held the post for just one season after a disappointing campaign in which the capital club lost in the UEFA Europa League play-offs to ŠK Slovan Bratislava and finished outside the European qualification places in Serie A. • Resurfaced at Celta in summer 2013, leading the Galician side to a ninth-place finish in the Liga in his only season in charge. Left in May 2014 and was soon announced as Gerardo Martino's replacement at Barcelona on a two-year contract.

UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • In 2012/13, Chelsea FC became the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and lost 4-3 on aggregate in the second round to PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United FC (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • SS Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six in 2007/08 aged 43 years and 252 days. Alessandro Costacurta is the oldest outfield player; the Milan defender was 40 years and 211 days when he played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07. • Francesco Totti is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 38 years and 59 days, in AS Roma's 1-1 draw at PFC CSKA Moskva on 25 November 2014. Ryan Giggs (37 years 290 days) was the previous record holder. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared; he was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos FC's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Lionel Messi became the first player to score five goals in a match in Barcelona's 7-1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 7 March 2012, a feat matched by FC Shakhtar Donetsk's Luiz Adriano at FC BATE Borisov on 21 October 2014. Ten more players, also including Messi, have scored four times in a game, most recently Zlatan Ibrahimović for Paris Saint-Germain on matchday three in 2013/14. • Cristiano Ronaldo set a new record for a UEFA Champions League stage with nine goals in 2013/14, whiich Luiz Adriano matched in 2014/15. Zlatan Ibrahimović (2013/14), (2004/05), Filippo Inzaghi and Hernán Crespo (both 2002/03) managed eight. • Barcelona have finished as group winners on 16 occasions, two more than Manchester United and Real Madrid. • FC Bayern München hold the record for successive wins in the UEFA Champions League proper with ten, from 2 April 2013 to 27 November 2013. That surpassed the previous mark of nine, set by Barcelona between 18 September 2002 and 18 February 2003. RSC Anderlecht's 12 straight defeats (10 December 2003 to 23 November 2005) is also a competition record. • Six teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96), Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage) and Real Madrid (2011/12 and 2014/15). • Sixteen teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, most recently Olympique de Marseille in 2013/14. • Real Madrid scored 20 goals in the 2013/14 group stage, equalling the competition record held jointly by Manchester United (1998/99) and Barcelona (2011/12). Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage, a tally matched by Real Madrid in 2012/13. • Only RC Deportivo La Coruña (2004/05) and Maccabi Haifa FC (2009/10) have failed to score in a group stage. • FC BATE Borisov conceded 24 goals in the 2014/15, a new record. The previous mark, 22, was held by GNK Dinamo Zagreb (2011/12) and FC Nordsjælland (2012/13). The next highest total is 19, shared by Galatasaray AŞ (2014/15), MŠK Žilina (2010/11), Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC (1995/96). • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal (2005/06), Manchester United (2010/11) and AS Monaco FC (2014/15) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, a mark FC Steaua Bucureşti surpassed on matchday six in 2013/14. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is six points: FC Zenit in 2013/14. Since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, eight teams have made it through with seven points: Legia Warszawa (1995/96),

Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Liverpool (2001/02), FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus (both 2002/03), Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen (2005/06) and FC Basel 1893 (2014/15). • SSC Napoli failed to qualify from their group with 12 points in 2013/14, the highest total of any team not to reach the next stage when the top two in each section progressed. Dynamo Kyiv (1999/2000), Borussia Dortmund (2002/03 – both second group stage), PSV Eindhoven (2003/04), Olympiacos FC and Dynamo Kyiv (both 2004/05), SV Werder Bremen (2006/07), Manchester City FC (2011/12), Chelsea FC and CFR 1907 Cluj (both 2012/13) and SL Benfica (2013/14) all missed out with ten points. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United lost the 2011 final in London and 12 months later Bayern were beaten in the showpiece in their own stadium, the Fußball Arena München.
