e-mail: newburyoperatic50ciety@ ic24.nct www.newburyoreraticsociety.co.uk Newbury Operatic Society is a Registered Charity. No. 2613 70 The Producer. . Jeanette Maskell Jeanette has been interested in the theatre since she was a teenager. Starting her theatrical career as a dancer going on to becomc a well known choreographer in the NewbUlY area. During her years with Ncwbury Operatic Society, she has been in thc chorus, taken numerous leading roles and worked back stage doing lighting, crcwing and props. Recently she has turned her hand to directing, giving her the chance to do what she does best, ' boss people around ' ! As the artistic director of our Young Stars group she ha s been responsible for coaching the children in all aspects of stage work. A task which gives her great pleasure. Jeanettc has enjoyed working on The Zoo & H.M.S. Pinafore immensely, bearing in mind that they are two shows with completely different identities.

Musical Director. Michael Evans LRAM , ARClyl, ATeL, GRSM. Michael studied music at the Royal Acadcmy of Music with Michael Head, Ernest Read and Sir John Barbirolli. In 1964 he was appointed Head of ~"'usie at Bulmershe School, Reading and, from 1974-1987, was Music Advisor for Oxfon.lshirc. IIc has conducted the Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshirc Youth Orchestras at the Roya l Albert Hall and the Festival Hall. Michael has also worked extensively with severely physically handicapped children at a special school near Aldershot. Michacl has playcd the organ at St. Edward's Cathedral, Jerusa lem and pcrformcd on radio and tclcvision. He has acted as Musical Director for ovcr 150 musicals and operettas with societies in Oxford, Reading, Maidenhead, Slough and of course Newbury. When not teaching piano he is organist at St.Augustincs Church, East I-l endrcd and Musical Director to St. MalY 's Chureh choir, Chieveley and the Downland Choristers.

The Chairman's message. For most of the Society'S history we could not have performed "The Zoo", music by Arthur Sulli va n with words by Bolton Rowe, because it was lost. So, having performed "Trial by Jury" last year as part of the Corn Exchanges' tenth anniversalY celebrations we thought we would try something 'new' to accompany the ever popular "HMS Pinafore". Pinafore's humour relics on the British obsession with social class and the inevitable mix-up of two babies at birth, but of course all turns out for the bes t in the encl, as it always does in the world of G&S. So tonight we are not just performing but Sullivan and Rowe as well. (Rumour has it that Rowe was a pseudonym for a church musician who thought that composing the lyrics of a popular piece was not quite dignified). \Vell we have cnjoyed performing both works and are very grateful to Gilbert & Sullivan, and Bolton Rowe, whoever he was.

Our next production is right up-to-date; "Into the Woods" by Sondheim, which replaces our usual summer conccrt. I hope you will enjoy it , as it is the first time we h8vc staged a full show in the summer at the Corn Exchange on 2nd and 3rd July. THE ZOO
