During the three trips conducted to Northern Cyprus in 2007, we found that three frog and toad species (Anura), 11 lizards (Lacertilia), 3 turtles (Testudinata) and 9 snakes (Ophidia) inhabit the northern part of the Cyprus Island. The distributions of a total of 26 reptile and amphibian species were observed and some ecological information on their biotopes was summarized, and the taxonomic states of some of the species determined discussed. Key Words: Northern Cyprus, herpetofauna, snakes, lizards Cyprus, with 9251 km2 area, is the part of the island has a mountain chain third largest island after Sicily and which is called Pentadactylos, made of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea. It is mesozoic calcareous rocks, runs in east- located in 34o33’-35o42’ northern latitudes west direction and has the highest point and 32o16’-34o36’ eastern longitudes. -

Travelling to Cyprus since his early childhood and deeply fascinated by living David J. On the basis of intensive zoological reading, he conducted his first field studies while still at school. Dr. David Sparrow is a Singapore-based photographer. He gained BSc (Hons) (1964) and PhD (1970) degrees in chemistry from the University of Birmingham, England. He worked in the chemical industry for 34 years during which time he co- authored, edited, reviewed and refereed numerous sci- entific articles, papers and books. Hans-Jörg Wiedl (“Snake George”). Born 1943 in Innsbruck (Austria), he grew up in the wilderness of Häselgehr in the Lechtal (Tirol), now a National Park. As an UN peacekeeper in Cyprus in 1973/1974, he developed his deep concern for the conservation of the herpetofauna of Cyprus. In 1986, he moved permanently to Cyprus, and established the “Snake George Reptile Park” in 1995. -

Tis study was designed to investigate the cytotoxicity and haemotoxicity of the Western barred (zebra) spitting cobra (Naja nigricincta nigricincta) venom to help explain atypical and inconsistent reports on syndromes by Namibian physicians treating victims of human ophidian accidents. Freeze-dried venom milked from adult zebra snakes was dissolved in phosphate bufered saline (PBS) for use in this study. Haemorrhagic and necrotic activity of venom were studied in New Zealand albino rabbits. Oedema-forming activity was investigated in 10-day-old Cobb500 broiler chicks. Procoagulant and thrombolytic activity was investigated in adult Kalahari red goat blood in vitro. -

Chapter 9 Amphibians and Reptiles of the Mediterranean Basin Kerim Çiçek and Oğzukan Cumhuriyet Kerim Çiçek and Oğzukan Cumhuriyet Additional information is available at the end of the chapter Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.70357 Abstract The Mediterranean basin is one of the most geologically, biologically, and culturally complex region and the only case of a large sea surrounded by three continents. The chapter is focused on a diversity of Mediterranean amphibians and reptiles, discussing major threats to the species and its conservation status. There are 117 amphibians, of which 80 (68%) are endemic and 398 reptiles, of which 216 (54%) are endemic distributed throughout the Basin. While the species diversity increases in the north and west for amphibians, the reptile diversity increases from north to south and from west to east direction. Amphibians are almost twice as threatened (29%) as reptiles (14%). Habitat loss and degradation, pollution, invasive/alien species, unsustainable use, and persecution are major threats to the species. The important conservation actions should be directed to sustainable management measures and legal protection of endangered species and their habitats, all for the future of Mediterranean biodiversity. Verbreitungskarten aller nachgewiesenen Arten sowie eine aktuelle herpetologische Faunenliste werden erstellt. Folgende Arten wurden regelmäßig und wiederholt festgestellt: Bufo viridis, Hyla arborea, Pelophylax cerigensis, Mauremys rivulata, Hemidactylus turcicus, Laudakia stellio, Ophisops elegans, Lacerta trilineata, Anatolacerta oertzeni, Ablepharus kitaibelii, Chalcides ocellatus, Trachylepis aurata, Blanus strauchi, Typhlops vermicularis, Dolichophis sp., Platyceps najadum, Hemorrhois nummifer, Zamenis situla, Natrix natrix, Telescopus fallax. Der taxonomische Status der Springnatter wird diskutiert. Aufgrund mehrerer aktueller Funde wird Mediodactylus kotschyi ergän- zend zur Herpetofauna von Rhodos hinzugefügt und das Auftreten folgender Arten, deren Vorkommen in der Literatur regelmäßig für Rhodos angegeben wurde, in Frage gestellt: Testudo graeca, Pseudopus apodus, Natrix tessellata. Sep. 2021 The Evolution of Defensive Strategies in Cobras Bryony Jones Supervisor: Dr Wolfgang Wüster Thesis submitted for the degree of Masters of Science by Research Biological Sciences The Evolution of Defensive Strategies in Cobras Abstract Species use multiple defensive strategies aimed at different sensory systems depending on the level of threat, type of predator and options for escape. The core cobra clade is a group of highly venomous Elapids that share defensive characteristics, containing true cobras of the genus Naja and related genera Aspidelaps, Hemachatus, Walterinnesia and Pseudohaje. Species combine the use of three visual and chemical strategies to prevent predation from a distance: spitting venom, hooding and aposematic patterns. -

Published online at www.vertebrate-zoology.de on June 22, 2011. > Abstract The present study consists of both locality records and of literary data for 37 species and subspecies of snakes reported from Jordan. Within the past decade snake taxonomy was re-evaluated employing molecular techniques that resulted in reconsideration of several taxa. Thus, it is imperative now to revise the taxonomic status of snakes in Jordan to update workers in Jordan and the surrounding countries with these nomenclatural changes. The snake fauna of Jordan consists of 37 species and subspecies belonging to seven families (Typhlopidae, Leptotyphlopidae, Boidae, Colubridae, Atractaspididae, Elapidae and Viperidae). Families Leptotyphlopidae, Boidae and Elapidae are represented by a single species each, Leptotyphlops macrorhynchus, Eryx jaculus and Walterinnesia aegyptia respectively. The families Typhlopidae and Atractaspididae are represented by two and three species respectively. Species of the former genus Coluber were updated and the newly adopted names are included. Family Colubridae is represented by twelve genera (Dolichophis, Eirenis, Hemorrhois, Lytorhynchus, Malpolon, Natrix, Platyceps, Psammophis, Rhagerhis, Rhynchocalamus, Spalerosophis and Telescopus) and includes 24 species. Family Viperidae includes fi ve genera (Cerastes, Daboia, Echis, Macrovipera and Pseudocerastes), each of which is represented by a single species, except the genus Cerastes which is represented by two subspecies. -
