During the three trips conducted to Northern Cyprus in 2007, we found that three frog and toad species (Anura), 11 lizards (Lacertilia), 3 turtles (Testudinata) and 9 snakes (Ophidia) inhabit the northern part of the Cyprus Island. The distributions of a total of 26 reptile and amphibian species were observed and some ecological information on their biotopes was summarized, and the taxonomic states of some of the species determined discussed. Key Words: Northern Cyprus, herpetofauna, snakes, lizards Cyprus, with 9251 km2 area, is the part of the island has a mountain chain third largest island after Sicily and which is called Pentadactylos, made of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea. It is mesozoic calcareous rocks, runs in east- located in 34o33’-35o42’ northern latitudes west direction and has the highest point and 32o16’-34o36’ eastern longitudes. -

Palestine - Walking Through History
Palestine - Walking through History April 04 - 08, 2019 Cultural Touring | Hiking | Cycling | Jeep touring Masar Ibrahim Al-Khalil is Palestine’s long distance cultural walking route. Extending 330 km from the village of Rummana in the northwest of Jenin to Beit Mirsim southwest of Al-Haram al-Ibrahimi (Ibrahimi Mosque) in Hebron. The route passes through more than fifty cities and villages where travelers can experience the legendary Palestinian hospitality. Beginning with a tour of the major sites in Jerusalem, we are immediately immersed in the complex history of the region. Over the five days, we experience sections of this route, hiking and biking from the green hills of the northern West Bank passing through the desert south of Jericho to Bethlehem. Actively traveling through the varied landscapes, biodiverse areas, archaeological remains, religious sites, and modern day lively villages, we experience rich Palestinian culture and heritage. Palestinians, like their neighboring Arabs, are known for their welcoming warmth and friendliness, important values associated with Abraham (Ibrahim). There is plenty of opportunity to have valuable encounters with local communities who share the generosity of their ancestors along the way, often over a meal of delicious Palestinian cuisine. The food boasts a range of vibrant and flavorsome dishes, sharing culinary traits with Middle Eastern and East Mediterranean regions. Travelling to Cyprus since his early childhood and deeply fascinated by living David J. Sparrow things, he has long been interested in the island’s nature, Hans-Jörg Wiedl especially in reptiles and amphibians. On the basis of intensive zoological reading, he conducted his first field studies while still at school. Civil service at the Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg (Frankfurt/M.) gave him the chance to bring further ideas to fruition. Since 2008, he has been studying biology and philosophy at The Amphibians the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. David J. Sparrow. and Reptiles of Cyprus Born in 1946 in the UK. Dr. David Sparrow is a Singapore-based photographer. He gained BSc (Hons) (1964) and PhD (1970) degrees in chemistry from the University of Birmingham, England. He worked in the chemical industry for 34 years during which time he co- authored, edited, reviewed and refereed numerous sci- entific articles, papers and books. He has had a lifetime fascination with snakes, and this project gave him the opportunity to combine this interest with his passion The Amphibians of Cyprus and Reptiles for photography. Hans-Jörg Wiedl (“Snake George”). Born 1943 in Innsbruck (Austria), he grew up in the wilderness of Häselgehr in the Lechtal (Tirol), now a National Park. As an UN peacekeeper in Cyprus in 1973/1974, he developed his deep concern for the conservation of the herpetofauna of Cyprus. In 1986, he moved permanently to Cyprus, and established the “Snake George Reptile Park” in 1995. -

Comparison with observations done in 2008-2013 showed significant declines in vertebrate biodiversity in this area, which has increasingly become urbanized, with an increase in temperature and a decrease in annual rainfall over the past four decades. Chapter 9 Amphibians and Reptiles of the Mediterranean Basin Kerim Çiçek and Oğzukan Cumhuriyet Kerim Çiçek and Oğzukan Cumhuriyet Additional information is available at the end of the chapter Additional information is available at the end of the chapter http://dx.doi.org/10.5772/intechopen.70357 Abstract The Mediterranean basin is one of the most geologically, biologically, and culturally complex region and the only case of a large sea surrounded by three continents. The chapter is focused on a diversity of Mediterranean amphibians and reptiles, discussing major threats to the species and its conservation status. There are 117 amphibians, of which 80 (68%) are endemic and 398 reptiles, of which 216 (54%) are endemic distributed throughout the Basin. While the species diversity increases in the north and west for amphibians, the reptile diversity increases from north to south and from west to east direction. Amphibians are almost twice as threatened (29%) as reptiles (14%). Habitat loss and degradation, pollution, invasive/alien species, unsustainable use, and persecution are major threats to the species. The important conservation actions should be directed to sustainable management measures and legal protection of endangered species and their habitats, all for the future of Mediterranean biodiversity. Jänner 2009 The herpetofauna of the Island of Rhodes (Dodecanese, Greece) Die Herpetofauna der Insel Rhodos (Dodekanes, Griechenland) THOMAS BADER & CHRISTOPH RIEGLER & HEINZ GRILLITSCH KURZFASSUNG Die Herpetofauna von Rhodos wird aufgrund von Literaturdaten, Sammlungsmaterial des Naturhistorischen Museums in Wien sowie Ergebnissen diverser herpetologischer Exkursionen aufgelistet. Verbreitungskarten aller nachgewiesenen Arten sowie eine aktuelle herpetologische Faunenliste werden erstellt. Folgende Arten wurden regelmäßig und wiederholt festgestellt: Bufo viridis, Hyla arborea, Pelophylax cerigensis, Mauremys rivulata, Hemidactylus turcicus, Laudakia stellio, Ophisops elegans, Lacerta trilineata, Anatolacerta oertzeni, Ablepharus kitaibelii, Chalcides ocellatus, Trachylepis aurata, Blanus strauchi, Typhlops vermicularis, Dolichophis sp., Platyceps najadum, Hemorrhois nummifer, Zamenis situla, Natrix natrix, Telescopus fallax. Der taxonomische Status der Springnatter wird diskutiert. Aufgrund mehrerer aktueller Funde wird Mediodactylus kotschyi ergän- zend zur Herpetofauna von Rhodos hinzugefügt und das Auftreten folgender Arten, deren Vorkommen in der Literatur regelmäßig für Rhodos angegeben wurde, in Frage gestellt: Testudo graeca, Pseudopus apodus, Natrix tessellata. Aktuelle Einzelfunde gelangen von Chamaeleo chamaeleon, Malpolon monspessulanus, Testudo grae- ca und Testudo hermanni, deren Status diskutiert wird. SUPPLEMENTARY METHODS 7 Prairie Rattlesnake Genome Sequencing and Assembly 8 A male Prairie Rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis viridis) collected from a wild population in Colorado was 9 used to generate the genome sequence. This specimen was collected and humanely euthanized according 10 to University of Northern Colorado Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee protocols 0901C-SM- 11 MLChick-12 and 1302D-SM-S-16. Colorado Parks and Wildlife scientific collecting license 12HP974 12 issued to S.P. Mackessy authorized collection of the animal. Genomic DNA was extracted using a 13 standard Phenol-Chloroform-Isoamyl alcohol extraction from liver tissue that was snap frozen in liquid 14 nitrogen. Multiple short-read sequencing libraries were prepared and sequenced on various platforms, 15 including 50bp single-end and 150bp paired-end reads on an Illumina GAII, 100bp paired-end reads on an 16 Illumina HiSeq, and 300bp paired-end reads on an Illumina MiSeq. Long insert libraries were also 17 constructed by and sequenced on the PacBio platform. Finally, we constructed two sets of mate-pair 18 libraries using an Illumina Nextera Mate Pair kit, with insert sizes of 3-5 kb and 6-8 kb, respectively. 19 These were sequenced on two Illumina HiSeq lanes with 150bp paired-end sequencing reads. Short and 20 long read data were used to assemble the previous genome assembly version CroVir2.0 (NCBI accession 21 SAMN07738522). -
