Due to the oppression that Iraqi people witness during the American intervention, Iraqi writers adopted the theme of violence. In an attempt to support the abuse his society endures, Saadawi uses ‘intertextuality’. This dissertation will investigate the relationship between intertextuality and violence in Frankenstein in Baghdad (2013). This text has been chosen purposefully because it expresses the way the linguistic aspect strengthens postmodern thematic concern. Moreover, this work shows how intertextuality works in favour of violence. This dissertation aims to show the national commitment of the writers whose countries are under oppression. In order to achieve the previously listed points, this thesis will be divided into three main chapters. The work will be introduced by a theoretical part that deals with both violence and intertextuality within the postmodern borders. The second chapter will deal with translated source proximate type of intertextuality that offers the author the chance to borrow a violent character from Shelley’s Frankenstein that really intensifies the thematic concern, violence. In the last chapter, the other types of intertextuality as well as the other postmodern techniques collaborate to intensify the threat and abuse in the Iraqi society. Finally, this dissertation attends to show the way writers as an intellectual class, through their depiction, try to change what could not be changed by the other classes. iii Résumé : La littérature n'est pas un simple mot sur les lèvres des écrivains ou un outil divertissant pour les paresseux, elle est un miroir réfléchissant pour mettre une certaine période de l'ère sociale. En raison de l'oppression que le peuple Irakien a vécu sous L’intervention des Etats-Unis. Le compatriote et l’écrivain Irakien Ahmed Saadawi a pris un travail qui vise à démontrer la relation existant entre l'intertextualité et de la violence dans le roman Frankenstein à Baghdad, qui a eu pour effet que l'intertextualité dans ce roman le corps de la violence. De l'auteur Britannique Mary Shelley, qui a été caractérisée par un débat sur la violence et la destruction sur Baghdad. Grâce à cet engagement public de l'écrivain Arabe et les questions de travail Irakiens l'étude est divisée en trois chapitres. Premier chapitre englobe le sujet de au-delà de la modernité et se qu'il a traîné de la violence. Le deuxième chapitre comprenait le type principal d’intertextualité de service à la question de la violence. Enfin, le dernier chapitre met en lumière les différents types d'intertextualité et d'autres techniques au-delà de la modernité que le travail est l'autre pour faire ressortir l'atmosphère de violence acceptée dans ce texte. It is a whole reflection of the social conditions, the economic prosperity, and the political progress. Literature widely acknowledges the moral values and the ills of any society. Each text has its own characteristics that make it belong to a specific literary movement and not another. Among the literary movements, postmodernism is the most controversial one. In fact, postmodernism that emerge as an intellectual tendency it has been developed to be a progress that deals with all human aspects among which literature. Almost the majority of contemporary writers use the same literary techniques that make them belong to the same literary movement which is postmodernism. However, themes adopted by the postmodernist writers differ from one to another with the exception of sharing the common subject of violence. Postmodernism is a vast phenomenon. Although, it seems that its literary characteristics belong only to the Western setting. Nevertheless, there are many Arabic texts that experience the literary aspects of postmodernism. In duality the Arabic works of literature deal with both the postmodern stylistic techniques and the major thematic concern of the postmodern era which is violence. If violence is a universal matter for the postmodernist writers, then it is a national commitment for the Iraqi writers during the American intervention. Therefore, this dissertation will examine the existence of the postmodern literary devices in Arabic Literature and particularly showing how one specific postmodern 1 device serves the thematic side. To put it another way, this thesis will interrogate the way the linguistic postmodern aspect, “intertextuality”, supports violence in the Iraqi text Frankenstein in Baghdad. The text of Ahmed Saadawi Frankenstein in Baghdad conveys several messages. In his text the Iraqi writer intends to show the progress of Arabic literature and the way it goes with and influenced by the world wide literature. The more significant than that, Saadawi aims to reflect the chaotic environment and the sense of distress the Iraqi people suffered from during the American intervention through the borrowing of different items like stories and expressions from a wide variety of texts especially the borrowing of a violent character, Frankenstein, from Shelly’s

    Ahmed Saadawi, Frankenstein in Baghdad translated by Jonathan Wright (Penguin, 2018) Baghdad is rocked by war and Iraqis flee the city under the frenetic rampage of American occupation, sectarian violence, and a wilting economy. Hadi, a junk dealer and storyteller of the Bataween neighborhood, scans the scene of a suicide car bombing. Hadi collects more than rubbish: amongst the smoke, dust, and the bloody debris of human bodies, he stoops to pluck the remnants of a nose from the wreckage, wraps it in a canvas sheet, and leaves the scene. Curating the remains of human bodies blasted asunder by suicide bombs, Hadi sutures bloody remnants to form a complete corpse, stowed away in his crumbling flat. Necromania is far from the reason Hadi pursues his gory task: ‘I made it [the corpse] complete so that it wouldn’t be treated as trash, so it would be treated like other dead people and given a proper burial’ (27). The nose from that day’s bombing was the crowning remnant that perfected the corpse. Hadi is peculiarly obsessed with imposing an order of wholeness on his disparate and dispersed corner of the Islamic world. He’s preoccupied with what happens at the periphery of suicide bombings: ‘It [a bomb] cut electricity wires and killed birds. Windows were shattered and doors blown in. Cracks appeared in the walls of the nearby houses, and some old ceilings collapsed. There was unseen damage too, all inflicted in a single moment’ (21). At the periphery of the rubble are human remains that are carelessly regarded as debris by Baghdad emergency teams.

I draw on the theoretical framework of the Russian philosopher and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin (1895–1975), the ethics philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1906–1995), and the Keywords: German-American philosopher and political thinker Hannah Arendt (1906– Dystopia; 1975). Saadawi’s unnamed monster, “The Whatsitsname,” comes into being Frankenstein; via an accidental if honorably intentioned act, when the main character, Hadi, Grotesque; Justice; compiles remnant corpses that he finds in the streets of Bagdad into one body Monster; Other; Violence with the aim of conducting “a proper burial” in order to dignify the dead. Interestingly, while the monster is the enemy in the eyes of the Iraqi government, he is a savior for the ordinary people— their only hope of putting an end to the violence and achieving justice. In this paper, I argue that Saadawi draws on the metaphor of Frankenstein’s monster not only to capture the dystopian mood in post-2003 Baghdad, but also to question the tragic realities, and the consequence of war, as well as the overall ramification of colonialism.

    The 15th International Gothic Association Conference Lewis University, Romeoville, Illinois July 30 - August 2, 2019 Speakers, Abstracts, and Biographies A NICOLE ACETO “Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut”: The Terror of Domestic Femininity in Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House Abstract From the beginning of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, ordinary domestic spaces are inextricably tied with insanity. In describing the setting for her haunted house novel, she makes the audience aware that every part of the house conforms to the ideal of the conservative American home: walls are described as upright, and “doors [are] sensibly shut” (my emphasis). This opening paragraph ensures that the audience visualizes a house much like their own, despite the description of the house as “not sane.” The equation of the story with conventional American families is extended through Jackson’s main character of Eleanor, the obedient daughter, and main antagonist Hugh Crain, the tyrannical patriarch who guards the house and the movement of the heroine within its walls, much like traditional British gothic novels. Using Freud’s theory of the uncanny to explain Eleanor’s relationship with Hill House, as well as Anne Radcliffe’s conception of terror as a stimulating emotion, I will explore the ways in which Eleanor is both drawn to and repelled by Hill House, and, by extension, confinement within traditional domestic roles. This combination of emotions makes her the perfect victim of Hugh Crain’s prisonlike home, eventually entrapping her within its walls. I argue that Jackson is commenting on the restriction of women within domestic roles, and the insanity that ensues when women accept this restriction.

When she wrote the introduction to the sec- ond edition of the novel, its first adaptation, Richard Brinsley Peake’s Presumption; or, the Fate of Frankenstein, had already been staged at the English Opera House. Quite amused by the play, Shelley wrote to Leigh Hunt that “Frankenstein had prodigious success as a drama” (Shelley 1980, 378), but she could not imagine the extent to which her ‘Creature’ would become a staple of our culture, spawning countless revisitations and fuelling an inexhaustible scholarly debate. Stem- ming from an international conference held at the Ca’ Foscari Uni- versity of Venice in 2018, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, 1818-2018 contributes new insights to the existing scholarship, confirming the status of the novel as a contemporary classic.     AWEJ for translation & Literary Studies volume, 1 Number 1, February 2017 Pp.158-170 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.24093/awejtls/vol1no1.11 The Monster Unleashed: Iraq’s Horrors of Everyday Life in Frankenstein in Baghdad Hani Elayyan Liberal Arts Department American University of the Middle East Egaila, Kuwait Abstract This paper analyzes Frankenstein in Baghdad, the winner of the 2014 International Arabic Fiction Prize by Iraqi novelist Ahmed Saadawi. I argue that by borrowing the story of Mary Shelley’s monster in Frankenstein, Saadawi manages to pinpoint the roots of the terrorism that has plagued Iraq since the American occupation. Terrorism emanates from fear. Fear is the monster that has been unleashed by the collapse of central authority which resulted in what Judith Butler has called ‘a precarious life’ in which sudden and violent death is always looming. In addition, the struggle for power among the new players in the Iraqi scene leads to selfishness, demagogy, and exploitation. The novel stresses the need to acknowledge that no one is free of blame. By acknowledging that that nobody is purely a victim or a victimizer, and by taking responsibility for one’s deed, there might be hope for a way out of the horrors of the civil strife and carnage. China, 43007 Ahmed Al-Sadawi is the first Iraqi writer to win the seventh International Prize for Arabic Fiction for his novel Frankenstein in Baghdad. Previously, novels about the Iraq war were written mainly by Americans, the works categorized as “post 9·11 literature.” Ahmed transforms Western image Frankenstein into Baghdad Frankenstein to denounce hegemonism, terrorism and sectarianism. The Baghdad monster and its maker related to the book title have been widely discussed. However, the “mad” woman Elishva has been overlooked while her story line is equally ingenious and important. Focused on Elishva, an old woman who waits for her son to return for over twenty years but suddenly leaves within a day, this paper explains her choices and the reasons why Ahmed arranges such a character and destiny. In this way, this paper explores the truth about religion through the recurring religious picture in the novel and the truth about body by means of Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception, with the purpose to display the novel’s artistical condemnation of the destructiveness of war. In the end of this paper Elishva-centering community of shared destiny will be discussed to stress her true nature and others’ false attitude toward violence-invaded life.
