    MOUSSE 55th Venice Biennale. Edson Chagas at the Angolan Pavilion June 12~2013 Golden Lion for the Best National Participation to Luanda, Encyclopedic City, the first pavilion of Angola at the International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia. The International Jury assigned the prestigious award “for the curators and artist who together reflect on the irreconcilability and complexity of site”. The Pavilion – commissioned and supported by the Ministry of Culture of Angola – hosts the photographic works by the Angolan artist Edson Chagas with an installation and a graphic project curated by Paula Nascimento and Stefano Rabolli Pansera (Beyond Entropy Ltd) in collaboration with Thankboys. The Pavilion is sponsored by Bai, Banco Privado Atlantico, and Ensa. Through Luanda, Encyclopedic City continues the research initiated by Beyond Entropy at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition 2012 and develops a reflection on the theme of “Encyclopedic Palace” through the work of Edson Chagas. The Encyclopedic Palace has been given an impossible task: no building can contain a universal multiplicity of spaces, possibilities, and objects. When a building tends towards the encyclopedic, it becomes a city. The city includes multiple conditions in the coherence of form— even though this is an urban, conflict-ridden form. Edson Chagas focuses on the complexity of Angola’s capital, Luanda, which derives from the presence of unpredictable spaces and the coexistence of irreconcilable programs: city and country, infrastructure and habitations, garbage tips and public spaces. Luanda is an encyclopedic city. How can the knowledge of a city be organized through the taxonomy of its spaces? Central to Edson Chagas’ work is a reflection on the ways in which images are used to give form to the way the city is experienced.

The first issue was launched exactly one year ago during the 11th Dakar Biennale and significantly extended the form and purpose of our online art magazine, contemporaryand.com. Together, the online platform and the print issues represent and embody different ways of narrating the story of contemporary art from African perspectives, a story without a single history or center. In this issue we talk to artists, curators and academics about alternative routes of communication: cartographies of migration and shifting political borders introduce our focus on migration, whether through the immersive work of Nigerian sound artist Emeka Ogboh, or the presence of the migrant in the multimedia work of Guy Wouete and Serge Alain Nitegeka. We listen to photographers documenting young people who have left their home countries under difficult circumstances, drawn by the expectation of a better life. During the past few weeks, our own center was Lagos, where we had the amazing chance to hold our first critical writing workshop together with a smart group of instructors and over 30 young art critics from Nigeria.     Magazine > AFRICAN SPOTLIGHT: EDSON CHAGAS RENAISSANCE MAN: EDSON CHAGAS The Angolan Artist Explores Space, Form, and Experience at the 55th Venice Biennale Artist Edson Chagas’ work is the centrepiece of the Angolan Pavilion—and the highlight of this year’s Venice Biennale. Taking part for the first time at the biannual art event, Angola was awarded the Golden Lion for ‘Best National Participation’ for its exhibition Luanda, Encyclopaedic City. The exhibition is built around 23 pillars of stacked posters printed with photographs from Chagas’ series Found not Taken. The often-gritty images depict cast-off items that gain new meaning through the context in which they were found—and in some cases, placed—by the artist. The Angolan pavilion is hosted at the 16th Century Palazzo Cini, a small museum in the heart of Venice where Renaissance masters adorn the walls. Against the haloed refinement of this venue, the take-away posters iterate the disposability of the artworks and how space redefines an object’s meaning—while also serving to emphasize the contrast between Africa’s accelerated development and Europe’s classical history. Since Angola’s three-decade-long civil war ended in 2002, the former Portuguese colony has become the fastest growing economy in Africa. This rapid development has brought with it an inevitable, gentrified sprawl. Formerly useful items lie abandoned, reminiscent of a time when wealth was less abundant and ingenuity meant survival to many Angolans. Although the photographs selected to be part of Luanda, Encyclopaedic City focus solely on the artist’s native city, Lost not Taken is an ongoing documentation of cities Chagas visits worldwide.
