The Police are praising the public after a wallet was snatched from an elderly lady in Alexandra Street on Tuesday. A male Maori lifted the wallet from the 71-year- old victim as she crossed the road after withdrawing cash from the national bank ATM. The offender ran up Bank Street and behind Kiwi Bank. A National Bank staff member who heard the woman calling for help ran up Roche Street and saw the offender approach. He grabbed the man and asked for the stolen items back. They were eventually returned, but the offender broke free and ran down market Street to a waiting silver Mitsubishi with a large rear spoiler. The wallet and contents were returned intact to a shaken, but grateful, victim. Te Awamutu Police say other members of the public were able to give valuable feedback about the incident and are confident the offender will be located and arrested.

BY COLIN THORSEN

It has taken Te Awamutu Sports Stags only two years to become Waikato third division rugby champions. The Chris Bowman coached Qubik Stags extended their record to 19 wins from 20 games downing Hinuera 21-10 in the final at Albert Park on Saturday. ‘‘All of our squad have played with passion and commitment to take us to where we are today in only our second season of exist- ence,’’ says Bowman. ‘‘The team atmosphere has been awesome all season, especi- ally on bus trips for our away games.’’ It was Te Awamutu Sports’ third Waikato championship in recent years, following in the footsteps of the triumphant U85kg team coached by Robin Ray and champion U19 side of 2006 coached by Wayne Wirihana and Mark Fleming. Wirihana was the Stags’ team trainer this season and has been involved in all these three champion teams in some role or another. Penalties were traded early in the final for a 3-all scoreline. The first of three Stags’ tries came in the 30th minute when prop Dave Muipi went on a bullocking run of 50 metres and TC180811CT01 offloaded to No. 8 Dwight Havie for TOP TEAM: Waikato third division champions Te Awamutu Sports Stags (and supporters) after beating Hinuera in Saturday’s final. the five pointer. Te Awamutu’s Compton Pikari shot a final round three-under-par 69 to win the prestigious ASB Cam- bridge Golf Classic. The 16-year-old went into the last round trailing Rotorua’s Peter Lee by four shots. Lee was unable to recapture the scintillating form he showed breaking the course record with 65 in the second round — finishing with a disappointing final round 74 to be pipped by one shot. Pikari was in sublime form throughout the tournament, recording three sub par rounds out of four — shooting 74, 70, 71, 69 for a 72-hole aggregate total of 284. Cambridge club manager, Alan Castle told the Courier that he had been watching the progress of young Pikari for the last few years. ‘‘He’s improved out of sight. Te Awamutu’s Federation II league soccer team were on the wrong end of a 4-0 hiding away to high flyers Ngongotaha. The win confirmed the hosts as league champions. Te Awamutu coach, Billy Carter reports that the scoreline could have been much worse had it not been for the heroics of Kevin Buckle in goal. Time and time again Buckle was sublime thwarting the Ngongotaha attack. He received accolades not only from his team, but also the opposition and spectators. Carter commented that it was by far Buckle’s best performance of the season and only a pity that the scoreline and result could not have ended on a better note for Te Awamutu. The loss sees them end the season in fifth place in the div- ision two league. Carter was full of praise for his squad and their efforts for the season with limited resources. He says plans are now underway to strengthen the squad for the 2012 campaign. The men’s Waikato B division side hosted Waihi at the Stadium, losing 2-0. Player of the day was Craig Crockett.
