'Through Thick and Thin' A 150th anniversary year history of Johnson Poole & Bloomer 1844-1994 SULA RAYSKA MA FRICS SETTING THE SCENE Next!' The rather timid young man knocked on the door and entered the room. He looked nervously at the three partners of the firm, wondering what difficult questions they would have thought up for his interview. The preliminary polite questions about his journey were soon over. 'Why do you want to come and work for Johnson, Poole & Bloomer?' asked one of the three in a voice which gave nothing away. 'Well, I know that it's an old established firm and the leading practice of mineral surveyors and geotechnical engineers in the country', he replied, hoping this was the right answer. 'Do you know how old? Do you know anything of its history?' 'No, n-n-not exactly', came the stammered reply. The senior partner stood up and walked to the window, glancing as he rose at an old photograph on the wall which showed a rather large man in a top hat, leaning against a fence with one of his cronies. Henry Johnson 1823-1885 'You'd better listen to me then, and I'll tell you how it all Founder of started', he said, as he looked out across the industrial Johnson Poole & Bloomer landscape of the Black Country. 'The story that I'm going to tell you', he began, 'is one of enterprise and hard work over the last hundred and fifty years. But the real beginning was some 300 million years ago when the coal-bearing or Carboniferous measures were formed and left a generous quantity of coal all over the area now known as Staffordshire.

  • Black Country Secondary Schools, Published in 2008, 2009 and 2010, Were Well Received
Contents Introduction 3 Using the Families of Schools document 7 Black Country in context 11 Family pages 16 Contextual family pages 34 Annex 1 – What it all means: footnotes and explanations 39 Annex 2 – School contact details 45 2 Introduction 1. Families of Schools: the fourth edition The first three editions of Families of Schools for Black Country Secondary schools, published in 2008, 2009 and 2010, were well received. We have been working with schools and education professionals across the Black Country to develop this fourth edition for 2011. As with previous years, this edition includes GCSE results with and without English and maths, a Contextual Value Added (CVA) measure and contextual families focusing on English as an Additional Language (EAL) and mobility. 2. How have families been grouped? Schools are grouped into families based on an average of prior attainment data and context data. Prior attainment data is the Average Key Stage 2 (KS2) Point Score (APS) for all pupils in Year 7 to Year 11 matched to Key Stage 4 data. Context data includes: • Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI) data, calculated by linking individual pupil postcodes to IDACI data and compiling an average figure for each school1. • The proportion of pupils eligible to receive Free School Meals (FSM). • The IDACI and FSM school averages are combined to give an overall indicator for the School Environment (SE). • The percentage of pupils whose first language is known or believed to be other than English (EAL). • A mobility measure, defined as the percentage of pupils in Year 10 or Year 11 who have joined the school within the last 2 years (L2Y).

Published reports are likely to list the names of the contributing institutions, but individual institutions will not be identified in the main text without their consent. The evidence used to inform the judgements made included: visits to lessons, discussions with pupils and staff, review of documentation and pupils’ work. Features of good practice observed Enterprise education is embedded in the whole curriculum at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. The clear enjoyment students get from enterprise-related activities and the confidence with which they are able to discuss their knowledge, understanding and experience. The very strong focus on preparing students for their adult life after school and, in particular, the excellent contribution the school makes to their future economic well-being. The commitment of all staff and the good use of both teaching and non-teaching staff in providing enterprise education for students.
