We apply the unique perspective of public audit to help Parliament and government drive lasting improvement in public services. The National Audit Office scrutinises public spending on behalf of Parliament. The Comptroller and Auditor General, Amyas Morse, is an Officer of the House of Commons. He is the head of the National Audit Office which employs some 900 staff. He and the National Audit Office are totally independent of Government. He certifies the accounts of all Government departments and a wide range of other public sector bodies; and he has statutory authority to report to Parliament on the economy, efficiency and effectiveness with which departments and other bodies have used their resources. Our work leads to savings and other efficiency gains worth many millions of pounds: £890 million in 2009-10. Chair: Welcome to the Public Accounts Committee on 1 June 2020. We are here today to look at the very important issue of water supply and demand management, and I thank the National Audit Office for its excellent Report on this. This is a concern that has been running for a long while, because if something is not done to manage our water supply and the demand for it, we will run out of water in the next 15 years. The Committee on Climate Change predicts that the demand for water in England will exceed supply by between 1.1 billion and 3.1 billion litres a day by the 2050s, but we are losing a lot through leakage—around 20%— which I know many colleagues around the House have concerns about. -

World Development Movement 66 Offley Road, London SW9 0LS +44 20 7820 4900 • [email protected] www.wdm.org.uk Exposed: How the UK govgovernmenternment has colluded with thethe UK finance sector agaagainstinst legislation to curb food speculation 2 Introduction Excessive speculation in the commodity markets has increased volatility in global commodity prices, and has played a significant role in the sharp food price spikes of the last few years. Recognising this, European legislators have proposed legislation to curb speculation, as part of a major reform of European financial regulation called the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID). The UK government has attempted to block strong regulation at every step of the process. Research by the World Development Movement reveals that government ministers have whipped up opposition to the legislation, urging the finance sector to lobby against the proposed measures. This research exposes how: 1. Shortly after the European Commission announced its intention to review MiFID in autumn 2010, UK government ministers and officials had a series of meetings with the financial services industry during which it shared the government’s position and encouraged the industry to take action. -

EM: Well, our party is a broad church. It always has been. It’s about meritocracy. And for me, our party’s also about social mobility. It’s about anybody can come from anywhere and achieve the highest post in the land, so long as they are prepared to work hard enough, so long as they can get a good team together and so long as you’ve got a vision that reaches out to the country. And that’s why I’m travelling the country all the time as part of a pub road show with blue collar Conservatives to really hear what people want us to do. Once we’ve delivered Brexit, what do they want after that? And they want money in schools, they want money going to police and they also, which I’ve announced today, is the public sector pay guarantee, because people want to know that they’re going to have a fair crack of the whip too. AM: But we’re not there yet. We’re not out of the EU yet. And your position on that is essentially that there’s not going to be another negotiation, they’re not really going to renegotiate, so we have to be prepared to leave at the end of October with no deal, if necessary. -

The declared objectives of the new organization were the maintenance of international peace and security, the development of friendly relations and international co-operation in solving international problems, as well as the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms.1 These goals were to be achieved through the work of the various organs of the UN, most importantly the Security Council, the General Assembly and the International Court of Justice. -
