Una tappa breve, ma ricca di bellezze paesaggistiche che si snoda seguendo per diversi tratti il percorso della Via Cassia, l’antica strada consolare tracciata dai romani nel I secolo A.C. Il dolce paesaggio collinare dei Monti Volsini, dei quali il Poggio del Torrone (690 metri) costituisce il massimo rilievo, regalano ai pellegrini splendidi panorami sul Lago di Bolsena. Pascoli, meravigliose foreste accompagnano i pellegrini nell’avvicinamento a Montefiascone. Gli incantevoli giochi d’acqua creati da fiabeschi corsi d’acqua e cascatelle offrono, invece, un piacevole sottofondo musicale attraversando il Parco Archeologico e Naturalistico di Turona. Nonostante le numerose fonti, tuttavia, si consiglia di riempire altrove le proprie borracce, per l’elevato contenuto di arsenico e fluoro dell’acqua locale. Nel parco si possono ammirare ancora i resti di antichi insediamenti etruschi, ma sono le città di partenza e di arrivo della tappa a stupire i pellegrini con i monumenti, la loro bellezza urbanistica e i borghi, ricchi di storia, tradizione e sapori.

Bolsena

Adagiata sulla sponda settentrionale dell’omonimo lago, Bolsena è nota anche come “la città del miracolo eucaristico”. Il Castello e Borgo San Rocco sono i due rioni più antichi dei quattro in cui è suddivisa la città ed è qui che si trovano i principali luoghi di interesse per i pellegrini della Francigena. Tra questi, meritano di certo una visita la Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara, sede del museo territoriale del Lago di Bolsena. Edificata dal XII da Papa Adriano IV, la fortezza è il principale punto di attrazione del quartiere, il più l’antico di tutta la Tuscia, che si caratterizza per il suo impianto a vicoli stretti e le atmosfere medievali.

Tra le architetture religiose, si segnalano la Chiesa di Santa Cristina, in stile romanico e risalente all’XI secolo, elevata a Basilica Minore da Papa Paolo VI nel 1976. Al suo interno si possono ammirare opere di Benedetto Buglioni, Sano di Pietro e Giovanni de’ Ferraris. Il luogo di culto più significativo è la Cappella del Miracolo, edificata in stile barocco nel 1639, ma ultimata solo nel XIX secolo, per celebrare il miracolo avvenuto nel 1263, quando da un’ostia sgorgò una notevole quantità di sangue. L’evento prodigioso portò un anno dopo all’istituzione della festività del Corpus Domini e la sua estensione a tutta la cristianità, dopo che il Papa Urbano IV fece trasferire nel duomo di Orvieto le prove del miracolo.

Bolsena

Lying on the northern shore of the lake of the same name, Bolsena is also known as “the city of the Eucharistic miracle”. The Castle and Borgo San Rocco are the two oldest of the four districts in which the city is divided and it is here that the main places of interest for pilgrims of the Francigena are found. Among these, the Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara, seat of the territorial museum of Lake Bolsena, is certainly worth a visit. Built by Pope Adrian IV in the 12th century, the fortress is the main attraction of the district, the oldest in the whole of Tuscia, which is characterized by its narrow alleyways and medieval atmosphere.

Secondo le narrazioni di Sant’Antonino da Firenze e, ancora prima, di Giovanni Villani (Nuova Chronica) Pietro da Praga era un religioso boemo pieno di dubbi. Pensava che la presenza del Cristo nell’ostia e nel vino dell’eucarestia fosse solo simbolica e non reale. Per fugarli si recò in pellegrinaggio a Roma, ma sulla via del ritorno, proprio a Bolsena le certezze riacquistate tornarono a vacillare. Era l’estate del 1263. Celebrando la messa nella chiesa di Santa Cristina, al momento della consacrazione l’ostia comincio a sanguinare copiosamente. Pietro, allora, avvolse l’ostia nel corporale e si rifugiò confuso nella sacrestia, ma alcune gocce caddero sul pavimento. Pietro si recò, quindi, Chiesa di Santa Cristina / Santa Cristina Church ad Orvieto, dove si trovava Papa Urbano IV, riportando il prodigio al Pontefice. Parco Archeologico e Naturalistico di Turona

Il percorso della tappa si addentra nel territorio del Parco Archeologico e Naturalistico di Turona. Le vestigia archeologiche fanno riferimento a un insediamento etrusco sulla sommità del colle più alto. Di esse, oggi, rimangono solo poche tracce. I reperti dell’area sepolcrale della Capriola sono visitabili al Museo Territoriale del Lago di Bolsena.

Ben più rilevanti sono i ruderi dei mulini risalenti al XIV secolo che scandiscono il cammino di una passeggiata lungo il Fosso d’Arlena, che con le sue acque e le numerose cascatelle caratterizza il territorio. Dal punto di vista naturalistico, il parco presenta molte specie botaniche tipiche dell’ambiente collinare del Monti Volsini: ginestra, ligustro, caprifoglio, olmo, nespolo, ulivo, vite, coltivati nei campi che qui chiamano Rojje.

Dal punto di vista faunistico, invece, si segnala la presenza di aironi cinerini e merli acquaioli. Nei numerosi corsi d’acqua si possono trovare anche anguille che risalgono i torrenti che alimentano il Lago di Bolsena.

Archaeological and Naturalistic Park of Turona

The route of the stage enters the territory of the Archaeological and Naturalistic Park of Turona. The archaeological remains refer to an Etruscan settlement on the top of the highest hill. Today, only a few traces of them remain. The remains of the Capriola burial area can be visited at the Museo Territoriale del Lago di Bolsena.

Much more important are the ruins of the mills dating back to the fourteenth century that mark the path of a walk along the Fosso d’Arlena, which with its waters and numerous waterfalls characterizes the territory.

From a naturalistic point of view, the park presents many botanical species typical of the hilly environment of the Volsini Mountains: broom, privet, honeysuckle, elm, medlar, olive tree, vine, cultivated in the fields that here they call Rojje. From the faunistic point of view, instead, we point out the presence of grey herons and water merlons. In the numerous watercourses you can also find eels that go up the streams that feed Lake Bolsena.

Montefiascone

Montefiascone sorge in posizione dominante a oltre 600 metri di quota. La vista dai Monti Volsini si allarga sul Lago di Bolsena fino a raggiungere il Mar Tirreno e la Maremma. Comune storico della provincia di Viterbo e vocato alla produzione di vini, Montefiascone si caratterizza per la Rocca dei Papi e la Cattedrale di Santa Margherita con la sua monumentale cupola, una delle più grandi d’Italia. La Rocca venne edificata su originario insediamento etrusco in epoca medievale, a partire dal tempo delle invasioni barbariche e la sua storia è indissolubilmente legata a quella dei papi di Roma, che proprio di Montefiascone fecero una sede vescovile e un rifugio sicuro. Tra le architetture religiose, spicca la cattedrale a pianta ottagonale di Santa Margherita (XV secolo), nella cui cripta sono conservate le spoglie della ragazza di Antiochia martirizzata sotto l’imperatore Diocleziano. La chiesa, voluta dai Farnese, vide all’opera artisti come il Bramante e Sangallo Il Giovane, ma fu completata solo nel XVII secolo, a causa di guerre, pestilenze e incendi che rallentarono i lavori. Non meno importante è la chiesa di San Flaviano, del XIV. Al suo interno si possono ammirare pregevoli affreschi di scuola romana e toscana e la tomba di Giovanni Defuk, il cui nome è associato al vino locale, l’Est Est Est, che con i piatti a base di pesce di lago, fa di Montefiascone anche un rinomato centro enogastronomico nella Tuscia.

Montefiascone

Montefiascone rises in a dominant position at an altitude of over 600 metres. The view from the Volsini Mountains extends over Lake Bolsena until it reaches the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Maremma. Montefiascone is a historic town in the province of Viterbo and dedicated to the production of wines. It is characterized by the Rocca dei Papi and the Cathedral of Santa Margherita with its monumental dome, one of the largest in Italy. The fortress was built on the original Etruscan settlement in medieval times, from the time of the barbarian invasions and its history is inextricably linked to that of the popes of Rome, who made Montefiascone a bishopric and a safe haven. Among the religious architectures, the octagonal cathedral of Santa Margherita stands out (XV century), in whose crypt are preserved the remains of the girl from Antioch martyred under the emperor Diocletian. Est Est Est!

Ogni anno, nel mese di agosto, Montefiascone celebra con la Fiera del Vino, il gioiello enologico del territorio: l’Est Est Est. Il nome di questo delizioso vino bianco deriva dal commento entusiastico di un vescovo, Giovanni Defuk, o meglio di un suo messo. Nel 1111, durante la sua marcia di avvicinamento a Roma, Defuk chiese al proprio attendente, Martino, di indicare con la scritta Est, le locande dove si poteva bere del buon vino. Giunto a Montefiscone, all’assaggio del vino locale, Martino applicò la tripla Est (C’è) al vino locale. Anche Defuk ne rimase conquistato. Ma il suo amore per l’Est Est Est gli fu fatale, perché ne bevve tanto da morirne. Come ultimo desiderio, Defuk chiese che la sua memoria venisse onorata ogni anno versando del vino sulla sua tomba (nella chiesa di San Flaviano). E questa è l’origine del corteo storico e dell’evento celebrati ogni estate.
