“The Mighty One Has Done Great Things”

“All generations shall call me blessed, for He who is mighty has done great things for me.” (Luke 1:48-49) In this pray- er Mary proclaims that God is the One to be praised and adored, and she thanks him for the great things He has done for her. What has God accomplished in her life?

God created Mary without original sin. “Through the centuries, The Church has become ever more aware that Mary, ‘full of grace’ through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception; that is what the dogma of the confesses as proclaimed by Pius IX in 1854. Mary is enriched from the first instant of her conception…redeemed in a more exalted fashion, by reason of the merits of her Son.”(Catechism of the , CC 491-492)

God, through Mary’s consent, and the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, blessed her as the Mother of Jesus. “At the announcement that she would give birth to ‘the Son of the Most High” without knowing man, by the pow- er of the Holy Spirit, Mary gave her consent “behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to your word,” and became the Mother of Jesus.” (CCC 494)

Mary cooperates in the work of God’s salvation “As St. says, “Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race. The knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by Mary’s obedience: what the Eve bound through her disbelief, Mary loosened by her faith.” Comparing her with Eve, they call Mary “The Mother of the living. And frequently claim, “Death through Eve, life through Mary.” (CCC 494)

Mary is our Mother in the order of the grace of God By her complete adherence to the Father’s will, to his Son’s redemptive work, and to every prompting of the Holy Spirit, the Virgin Mary is the Church’s model of faith and charity…Her role in relation to the Church and to all humanity goes still further in a wholly singular way she cooperated by her obedience, faith, hope, and burning charity in the Savior’s work of restoring supernatural life to souls. For this reason she is a mother to us in the or- der of grace. (CCC 967-968)

Mary’s Assumption reflects God’s promise of eternal life The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians: In giving birth you kept your virginity; in your Dormition you did not leave the world, O Mother of God, but were joined to the source of Life. You conceived the Living God and, by your , will deliver our souls from death. (CCC 966)

The Mighty One has done great things!
