Fall is upon us – and that means flu season. This is just a reminder that the best way to stop the spread of infection is through careful and frequent hand washing using soap and warm water or applying foaming Microsan. You will find two dispensers within Mollie Nye House . . . one in the activity room and the other in the receptionist area.

In the spirit of giving, LVSA is collecting items for the North Shore Youth Shelter run by Hollyburn Family Services. We will be collecting “NEW ITEMS” (male & female) during the month of November such as socks, toques, scarves, pajamas, underwear, as well as personal hygiene products, e.g. toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, floss, comb. These items can be deposited in the container near the reception desk, unwrapped, at Mollie Nye House, (Look for the big red sock). A volunteer will deliver these items on Dec 3rd to the Hollyburn Family Services offices on Esplanade in .

Daylight Savings ends on Sunday, Nov. 4th. Do not forget to turn your clocks back one hour when retiring the night before, reclaiming the hour you lost in the spring.

Nov. 11th Remembrance Day Service in Lynn Valley will be held at the Veterans Plaza at 11 am sharp. See you there. Veterans Plaza is located at the south end of Lynn Valley Park tucked between the Archives building and the Lynn Valley pre-school building. LVSA will be placing a wreath again this year.

On Oct. 26th, Trivia Night was well attended and thanks again to Stephanie Varju & Janet Dysart for doing a great job organizing the trivia. Kudos to the committee members who made it a fun evening for all the attendees. Thanks to Van Pet of Lynn Valley Town Centre and Westlynn Meats of Lynn Valley Centre for their generous donations of door prizes.

This year, due to a price increase from the catering company, The Banqueting Table, the cost for the delicious Christmas meal and entertainment by the Parkgate Singers will be $23. Starting January 2019 the cost for our monthly hearty lunch will be $13. Some good news for you! The 2019 LVSA membership fee will remain at $20.

HEARTY LUNCH FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9 Catered by The Banqueting Table – Chili, Garlic Bread, Salad and Dessert Cost: $10 for ALL Attendees Deadline for sign up MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5 Speaker: Kevin Vallely – Rowing the Northwest Passage For those LVSA members who have attended the first two speaker events, the chance to learn more about the issues facing our world today is an opportunity not to miss.

The LVSA would like to thank Janet Dysart who has been instrumental in securing first-rate speakers to deliver the latest information on the impact of climate change—an issue of great concern affecting the sustainability of our planet. Pictured at right is Janet with guest speaker Deborah Kennedy of The Nature Trust of BC.

It is not too late to join us at the upcoming Hearty Lunches in November and January 2019 when we present the third and fourth speakers in the series, “Impacts of Climate Change”. See next page for details. You will not be disappointed!

Impacts of Climate Change” Speaker Series 2018/2019

Friday, September 14 – Deborah Kennedy Nature Trust BC – Conservation and Climate Change Friday, October 12 – Glen Parker NS Streamkeeper – Climate Change Challenges to Streams Friday, November 9 – Kevin Vallely Explorer and Adventurer – Rowing the Northwest Passage Friday, January 11, 2019 – Speaker TBA – Impacts to our Forests – Drought, Cold and Fire

September 2018 - Deborah Kennedy is Development and Communications Manager for Nature Trust BC. This organization, part of the larger Nature Trust Canada, is dedicated to conserving BC’s biological diversity through securement and management of ecologically significant lands. It is the oldest and largest provincial land trust in BC. They acquire ecologically significant land usually through purchase or donation, then care for this land in order to protect nature with its diversity of wildlife and plants and their critical habitats. The Nature Trust of was established in 1971 with a $4.5 million grant from the Federal Government in honour of BC’s Centennial. Since then, the brightest minds in conservation science and business have built The Nature Trust.

October 2018 - Glen Parker is Treasurer for North Shore Streamkeepers and comes from a career as an engineer in the petroleum industry. His global work has made him acutely aware of how humans have impacted the world, and how we have an urgent need to face climate change with knowledge and proper management. Working in and around our local streams in our neighbourhoods, we can assist the fish population to thrive. A recent off-channel at Lynn Creek, just above the new Highway Interchange, will provide a resting area for salmon during the high season of low water flow and also during the high flows. This project was the product of neighbours, both industrial and the Port of Vancouver, coming together with conservationists such as the North Shore Streamkeepers.

November 2018 - Kevin Vallely is a man of adventure and discovery, as well as a Lynn Valley resident. His career as an architect gives him the freedom to travel and to witness the issues facing the ecological world. His adventure resume is stacked with compelling expeditions to all parts of the world including skiing Alaska’s 1,860-kilometre Iditarod Trail and scampering over Vancouver Island’s West Coast Trail in record time (10 hours, 13 minutes). In this gripping first-hand account, we will hear how four seasoned adventurers navigated a sophisticated, high-tech rowboat across the Northwest Passage. One of the “last firsts” remaining in the adventure world, this journey was only possible because of the dramatic impacts of global warming in the high Arctic, which provide an ironic opportunity to draw attention to the growing urgency of climate change.

January 2019 – TBA - We will have a speaker with forestry knowledge to show us why our forests are burning, why cedars are dying, why we should worry about interface wildfires--the impacts of drought, cold and fire.

TWO STORIES BY OUR MEMBERS ( (BOTH WARNINGS OF SENIOR SAFETY)

Card Scam at by Lorraine Campbell

One of our members recently shared an experience with me that she had at Capilano Mall. She was at the self-checkout at Walmart using a debit/credit card for her purchases. As she was walking out the door, a very distinguished gentleman rushed after her saying, “Madam, you dropped this $20 bill." With much flourish, he insisted it was hers. She thought not but checked in her wallet and sure enough the $20 she did have was still there. She said "No, it is not mine. You keep it." He went on and on, gushing over her, purposely distracting her, while an accomplice lifted her card from her wallet. Very soon after, an attempt was made to withdraw $900 from her bank account which fortunately was denied as the amount was too high. Beware the scam!

Using Cell Phones for Emergencies by Mary Robinson

Over ten years ago, I went out my front door to put something in the garbage. I tripped on some stairs and sprained my foot. Luckily, I had my cell phone in my pocket and was able to call a family member and got help. Last summer, one of our members fell in her yard and could not get up. Because she had her phone with her, she was able to call me for help. This summer, another member fell outside and no one came to help her. She had hurt her ankle and had to crawl home. If she had been carrying her phone, she could have called someone for help. Most of us have cell phones. Many of us do not ensure they are always charged and do not necessarily carry them when we go out, especially when we just go out to our own yards or go for a short walk. Also, many of us do not have contacts in those phones, neighbours, family members or others close by whom we could call if something happens. I would like to offer other seniors help with their phones. I would be willing to sit down with a small group to help put contacts into cell phones. Please contact me if you would like more info. Helping Keep Seniors Connected

For seniors who need a ride there is a new program for you. The North Shore Seniors RideLine has been developed to keep seniors connected. We act as an information hub, bringing together the different transportation options available for seniors on the North Shore. We match older adults to bus or car rides in order to keep them connected with friends, services and favourite activities or day to day needs that we take for granted such as going shopping or getting to a medical appointment. When existing transportation options don’t work, we can offer rides directly with a supportive, flexible and caring door-to- door service.

If you need a ride, we will find the right ride for you. The RideLine: 604-345-9626

Brimging People Together North Vancouver, BC www.lvss.ca (604) 987-5820

Hello Readers!

Lots of updates for you this newsletter.

The Board of Directors of LVSS has decided to raise the drop in rates as of January 1st 2019. LVSA members will pay $3.00 and non-members will be $5.00. Rental rates and other activities are also increasing.

LVSS is tasked with operating Mollie Nye House on behalf of the District of North Vancouver (DNV). However, DNV funds only one-third of what it actually costs to keep “the House” running, so we must source revenue from our programs, services and activities while continuing to seek grants and donations for specific projects.

It has been some time since rates were addressed, and I hope no one feels this is a hardship. Any questions, please leave a message for me at the office.

On a happier note, Bright Christmas will take place on Saturday, December 1st at 7p.m. – all welcome!

Our Traditional Tea will be one-sitting on December 15th at 2 pm.

Watch for posters and ticket sales and an opportunity to volunteer for one or both!

Lastly, we have partnered with the Lynn Valley Community Association to prepare Christmas Cards for local school children. We will be cutting out shapes then the children will write Christmas messages. The cards will be delivered to isolated seniors in our community. A great way to connect everyone!

Join us on Tuesday 13th November from 3- 5 pm in the Dining Room if you would like to give us a hand. All welcome!!!

Check our websites or the notice boards for more information on activities. www.lvss.ca www.molllienyehouse.com
