Aerial Survey of Graham Land, the Falkland Islands Aerial Survey of Graham Land* The Falkland Islands & Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition 1955-57 P. G. ABSTRACT: The paper describes the recent expedition during the two Antarctic summers of 1955/56 and 1956/57 carried 01tt by Hunting A erasurveys Ltd. under contract to the United Kingdom Government. Employing two Canso amphibean aircraft and a ship-based helicopter, the expedition completed full vertical air photo coverage of an area of 35,000 square miles over the peninsula of Graham Land and adjoining archipelago in the British sector of the Antarctic. Using a 950-ton freighter converted as a helicopter base, parties of ground surveyors were landed along the coast and islands of Graham Land, where they completed over 200 miles offully-observed triangulation to serve as ground control for the preparation of photogrammetric maps covering the area photographed .. these are now under preparation by the Directorate of Overseas Surveys. The author, who organized and led the expedition, describes the equipment and methods employed for both photography and ground control, with special reference to the photogrammetric problems involved. The Graham Land peninsula (or Palmer peninsula, as you prefer to call it in the United States) extends for 800 miles from the main mass of the Antarctic continent and is divided from South America by 600 miles of tempestuous sea known as Drake Strait. (Figure 1). A central plateau of ice between 4,000 and 8,000 feet above sea level forms the backbone of the peninsula, which descends abruptly on either flank in a complex system of mountain ridges di­ vided by innumerable glaciers and deeply indented by fjords. The eastern coast of Graham Land is permanently blocked by pack ice that is compacted under great pressure by the prevailing easterly gales.     British Antarctic Survey History The United Kingdom has a long and distinguished record of scientific exploration in Antarctica. Before the creation of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), there were many surveying and scientific expeditions that laid the foundations for modern polar science. These ranged from Captain Cook’s naval voyages of the 18th century, to the famous expeditions led by Scott and Shackleton, to a secret wartime operation to secure British interests in Antarctica. Today, BAS is a world leader in polar science, maintaining the UK’s long history of Antarctic discovery and scientific endeavour. The early years Britain’s interests in Antarctica started with the first circumnavigation of the Antarctic continent by Captain James Cook during his voyage of 1772-75. Cook sailed his two ships, HMS Resolution and HMS Adventure, into the pack ice reaching as far as 71°10' south and crossing the Antarctic Circle for the first time. He discovered South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands although he did not set eyes on the Antarctic continent itself. His reports of fur seals led many sealers from Britain and the United States to head to the Antarctic to begin a long and unsustainable exploitation of the Southern Ocean.     SECTION THREE: Historic Sites and Monuments in Antarctica The need to protect historic sites and monuments became apparent as the number of expeditions to the Antarctic increased. At the Seventh Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting it was agreed that a list of historic sites and monuments be created. So far 74 sites have been identified. All of them are monuments – human artifacts rather than areas – and many of them are in close proximity to scientific stations. Provision for protection of these sites is contained in Annex V, Article 8. Listed Historic Sites and Monuments may not be damaged, removed, or destroyed. 315 List of Historic Sites and Monuments Identified and Described by the Proposing Government or Governments 1. Flag mast erected in December 1965 at the South Geographical Pole by the First Argentine Overland Polar Expedition. 2. The research was part of a larger-scale investigation of Operation Deep Freeze – organic carbon dynamics in glacier systems. 50 Years 8 Victoria Upper Glacier abuts permanently ice-covered “Lake Upper Victo- ria”, and it is likely that the glacier overran organic matter in lake sediments International Polar Year (IPY) during previous advances. During January and November, 2003, ice was sampled 2007–08 News 9 across the transition between meteorically derived glacier ice and underlying McMurdo Dry Valleys, basal ice at the terminal ice cliff at VUG. Two shallow ice cores were also collect- October–November 2004 12 ed from the glacier surface. The objectives were to compare and contrast organic carbon abundance and characteristics between glacier and basal ice from the Report on the IX SCAR same glacier.
