    CHAPTER II HISTORY ANCIENT PERIOD The archaeological discoveries prove that the region of Panipat was inhabited by human beings from very earlier times and had been the centre of vigorous cultural and political activity. We know from the hymns of the Rigveda (VII, 18,19; V.52,17) that the Bharatas of the Saraswati Valley held sway up to the Yamuna river and defeated Ajas, Sigrus and Yaksus1. The archaeological heritage of Panipat region can be divided into pre-historic, proto-historic and historical phases. The extent of archaeological sites of Panipat district, numbering 63, can be classified into Pre-Harappan, Harappan, Late Harappan, Painted Grey Ware (PGW), Grey Ware, Early Historical, Early Medieval and Medieval periods2. Alexander Cunningham and Rodgers were the first archaeologists who collected some relics specially coins from a few sites of Panipat. But it was in the year 1952 that B. B. Lal of Archaeological Survey of India discovered Painted Grey Ware and Northern Black Polished Ware from the mounds of Panipat and Sonepat. S. B. Chaudhary also discovered the Painted Grey Ware at Baholi, 13 kilometres to north-west of Panipat3. Subsequent archaeological explorations conducted by a number of archaeologists and recent explorations along the right bank of River Yamuna conducted under the supervision of C. Dorje have resulted to the discovery of Dull Red Ware in Garsh Sanrai in Panipat Tehsil and Red Ware, Red Polished Ware and Dull Red Ware in Jaurasi Khalsa in Samalkha Tehsil of Panipat district. These explorations have brought to light several ancient mounds containing the relics of bygone history4.

    CHAPTER II HISTORY Ancient Period Kurukshetra is as old as the history of India. The history of the area in which Kurukshetra district lies can be traced back, howsoever dimly at times to the ancient Aryan Past. According to Dr. R.C. Majumdar, “it was a religion-cultural centre even before the immigration of the Aryans into India” 1. The pre-Harappans and the Harappans were the earliest people inhabiting the district as is gathered from the discovery of their pottery from some sites in Kurukshetra and its adjoining areas2. It is not possible to attempt any reconstruction of these earliest inhabitations on the basis of this slender evidence. The next phase of the material culture of the district is marked by the discovery of Later-Harappan Ware (c.1700-1500 B.C.) from as many as sixty three sites 3, some of which have been systematically excavated. A brief account of the excavated sites and the valuable evidence which they have brought to light is as follows.- The ancient mound near village Daulatpur is of a moderate size; rising to a height of nearly 6 metres. It lies by the side of nullah, branching off from the Chutang (ancient Drishadvati ). It is approached via Kurukshetra-Saharanpur road and is about 15 Kms. from Thanesar. The earliest settlement at the site represents a late phase of Indus Civilization (c.1700-1500 B.C.). The period was characterized by the use of typical sturdy, red coloured pottery, painted in black and decorated with geometric and linear designs. Its history is replete with religious, cultural and heroic incidents which have had a bearing on Indian history. As per the Hindu mythology, the present Kaithal was once known as Kapisthal (the habitation of the monkeys). The ancient place is known as Kapil Muni’s Ashram and it is located on Kaithal-Narwana Road. Kapil Muni who wrote Sankhya Shastra, delivered a discourse here on the subject to his mother Devbuti. Kalayat town’s name seems to be derived from Kaplayat. Mahabharta and Vamana Purana referred to a tirtha known as Kapila Hrada popularly known as Kapil muni tirtha. There are two brick temples which date back to circa 700 A.D. Temples are the only surviving examples of excellent Hindu architecture that prevailed during that time built with carved bricks without any mortar. The temple built in Panchaartha style of arvhitecture has a roughly square shaped shrine. The most striking and attractive feature of the temple is the arrangement of the carved bricks.     GGAZETTEER OF KARNAL Revenue and Disaster Management Department, Haryana CHANDIGARH (INDIA) 2016 BACKGROUND HARYANA DISTRICT GAZETTEERS The first Gazetteer of Karnal was published in 1892, followed by 1918 (some people consider Ibbetson's Report in 1883 itself to be the first Gazetteer-type text). After that, the next one appeared in independent India, in 1976. This current one would then be, its fourth edition. Karnal was a very important British town, yet, it has surprisingly attracted very little research and visibility in popular perception and deeper understanding of an evolving town. Given this backdrop, this Gazetteer assumes an important role in policy making and knowledge inventory for future. The idea of a Gazetteer is a living document of memory, of storytelling, of governance, of interventions, of highs and lows, of wins and losses. It dissects into the soul of the region. It offers a unique lens to see one's society, and generates a discourse on institutions and history. It amalgamates human emotions and physical infrastructure. We have tried to adhere to the core philosophy of a Gazetteer. Peeping into the soul of a city is not an easy task to begin with. But once you're in it, you're totally in. The overwhelming power through which a city subsumes you within itself makes it very difficult to view it from outside. This was done through a group of highly committed scholars and students who lived and breathed the city. Collecting information from various government departments, coupled with extensive research through secondary sources led to populating raw data and information, to help distill the city as a living monument of memory and culture.

We evaluated the impact of the organic and conventional farming of basmati rice on water quality during the rainy season (July to October) of 2011 and 2016 at Kaithal, Haryana, India.
