Distribution, warning, and monitoring

This information has been summarised from the Introduction to Tropical (2nd Edition) which can be accessed, free of charge, on the MetEd/ COMET website (requires free registration).

There are six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) together with five Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres (TCWCs) around the world. These centres have been designated as regional warning centres for tropical cyclones (including tropical depressions). Together, these centres cover all regions of the global tropics affected by tropical cyclones.

Although the US Navy/Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) is not a designated warning centre, its forecasts and archive information are also widely used. There are also other centres that are not designated centres, but make more localized forecasts including the , The Shanghai Weather Bureau, and the Korean Meteorological Agency.

The RSMCs and TCWCs have responsibility to provide advisories and bulletins with up–to–date basic meteorological information on all tropical cyclones to their regions, including track and intensity observations and forecasts. They may also include a detailed discussion of the underlying reasoning leading to the forecasts and other information that is available to that centre (e.g., satellites, computer forecast model outputs). These and the above-mentioned national centres also prepare comprehensive best track archives of tropical cyclones in their warning area.

Summary . Tropical Cyclone warnings are provided by Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres (RSMCs) and Tropical Cyclone Warning Centres (TCWCs). . Other organisations provide further data and/or localised forecasts . RSMCs and TCWCs provide advisories, bulletins, and basic meteorological information on all tropical cyclones to their regions. . At a minimum they provide track and intensity observations and forecasts.
