2014 ARS National Miniature Rose Show and Conference Hosted by the West Jersey Rose Society in Mount Laurel, NJ By Bill Kozemchak

The West Jersey Rose Society hosted the 2014 National Miniature Rose Show and Conference at the Hotel ML in Mount Laurel, NJ on July 25-27, 2014. The conference opened Friday morning with an arrangement seminar run by Gary Barlow and Lew Shupe with some local and district designers/arrangers assisting. There were about 35 people attending this seminar and they were impressed with another fine seminar run by Gary and Lew. The seminar focused on modern and oriental designs with several demonstrations and opportunities for the participants to create their own designs followed by brief pointers about the key elements that make up a beautiful design. At the end of the seminar, each participant also received a miniature container suitable for an oriental or modern design.

The official opening of the conference began with a casual reception following a social hour where attendees gathered to see friends from around the country and a visitor, Dawn Eagle from New Zealand. ARS President Jolene Adams, Vice President Pat Shanley and Laura Pfender from ARS Headquarters were there to represent the ARS. Gus Banks, Convention Chair welcomed everyone to New Jersey and the 2014 ARS Miniature Rose Show & Conference. Many people commented on how much they enjoyed the buffet stations. There were stations for pasta, quiche, meat (with local favorites- cheesesteaks, hamburgers, meatballs and sausage with peppers and onions) and pie with three different types. When the buffet ended, many people stayed in the Terrace Room and socialized, while others headed to the hospitality room for drinks, snacks and desserts.

At 10 pm Friday evening, the showroom was opened for exhibitors to enter their photographs and arrangements. Horticulture entries were accepted Saturday morning starting at 5 am and ending at 10 am. There was some concern about the size of the show because of the date which was challenging for a lot of areas of the country, but the tables started filling up nicely with very good quality roses, designs and photographs. The show opened to the public at 1 pm after judging ended. There were 278 horticulture entries, 78 designs and 52 photography entries.

The ARS Board approved the Frank Benardella National Challenge Trophy earlier this year and it was available for the first time in Mount Laurel in Frank’s home state of New Jersey. A lot of support from all over the country made this possible for the Penn-Jersey District to spearhead this effort and have it done to meet all the deadlines. The specifications for the class are seven different exhibition miniature blooms in separate containers. This was thought to make it available to many rose exhibitors, while still maintaining a challenge to have seven different excellent blooms. There were four entries in the class this year and all of great quality. Penn-Jersey’s own Michael & Sally Wrightstone were the first winners of this new national trophy with the following roses: ‘Renegade’, ‘Bee's Knees’, ‘Soroptomist International’, ‘Joy’, ‘Dr. Tommy Cairns’, ‘Ty’ and ‘Edisto’. This included two roses bred by Frank. The Wrightstones were also winners of the Harm Saville Challenge Bowl, Miniflora King, Prince and Duchess, Miniature Duchess, Miniflora Spray Queen and Miniflora English Box. It was a very impressive show for them. Bob & Sandy Lundberg were winners of the Top Gun Award with a beautiful collection of nine minifloras. They also won Miniflora Queen with ‘’ and Miniflora Stages of Bloom. Sandy also scored Best of Show in the photography section. The Basket Challenge was won by James & Brenda Richardson as well as Miniature Prince. The Miniature Queen of Show was won by Richard Anthony & Brenna Bosch with ‘Joy’. They also won Miniature King, Miniature English Box, Miniature Frame and Palette, Miniflora Frame and Palettte and Miniature Open Bloom. Miniature Spray Queen was won by Bruce & Liz Monroe with ‘Gourmet Popcorn’ and they also took Miniature Spray King. Tom Mayhew won the Miniature Spray Princess. Dr. Suni & Rafiq Bolar took the Miniature Princess, the AOE Collection, Hybridizers Challenge, Hall of Fame Challenge and Miniature Bowl. The Bolar’s son Adam Bolar won Best Novice with a beautiful spray of ‘Joy’. Don Myers won the Judges Class with’ Memphis King’. Also making appearances on the Head Table were Anne & Jim Hering, Donna & Glen Smith, Gus Banks and Elton Smith. Sandy Lunberg won Best of Show in Photography with a stunning photo of ‘Crystal Palace’. Gus Banks took two classes, Suni Bolar, Rhea Bolar and Karin Patrick each took one. Jim Redington won the Novice Class.

The Rose Vine Volume 47, Issue 4 August, 2014

The Ralph Moore Arrangement Trophy went to Nancy Redington for her Vista arrangement. She also won the ARS Silver Award, ARS Mini Princess, Mini Keepsake and a total of five classes. Ann Smith won the J. Benjamin Williams National Arrangement Trophy with her ‘Regina Lee’ arrangement and the Mini Court of Etiquette award. The Penn Jer- sey Challenge was won by Svetlana McCoy with her ‘Madeline Spezzano’ design, Mini Oriental and a total of four class wins. The ARS Gold Award and ARS Mini Artist's Award went to Georgie Dettinburn. Elton Smith won the ARS Bronze Award. Cathy Button won the Royalty Award. ARS Mini Duchess went to Joan Singer. Tim Hahn was the Best Novice and Pat Lawrence won the Judges Class. Jim Redington won for Class 19.

There were two excellent afternoon programs. Dr. Suni & Rafiq Bolar started with “Rose Hybrididzing 101” and Richard Anthony followed with “The Miniflora- Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”. At 4:15 pm the Head Table horticulture and photography winners were announced by Bill Kozemchak and the design section winners were an- nounced by Lillian Walsh, National Chair of Arrangement Judges. Both were assisted by Judy Goss who was in charge of tabulation. The crowd gathered again at 6 pm for social hour and dinner followed.

At dinner Penn-Jersey District Director Nancy Redington presented June Benardella with the first keepie block for the Benardella National Trophy inscribed for her on this special occasion. June and both her daughters Karen and Jane were able to be present for the inaugural presentation of the trophy. June and Nancy then presented Michael & Sally Wrightstone with the trophy. Nancy Redington and Bill Kozemchak then presented the Saville Challenge Trophy and the Top Gun Award to the Wrighstones and the Lundbergs respectively. Lillian Walsh and Iliana Okum then presented the Ralph Moore Arrangement Trophy to Nancy Redington and the J. Benjamin Williams arrangement trophy to Ann Smith. The West Jersey Rose Society presented Brenna Bosch with the ARS Bronze Medal for outstanding service to their society.

Jim Hering presented the Miniature Hall of Fame award to June Benardella for Frank’s ‘Soroptimist International’, another nice honor to the man for whom this conference was dedicated. Dennis Bridges also received a Miniature Hall of Fame award for ‘Incognito’. Unfortunately Dennis was unable to attend.

ARS President, Jolene Adams, then presented Gus Banks, Elaine Adler, Terry Palise, Pat Bilson, Iliana Okum and Bill Kozemchak with Presidential Citations for their work on the National Miniature Convention, the Benardella Trophy, and support of the Penn-Jersey District and the American Rose society.

Laura Pfender announced the ARS Fall Nationals “Roses in the Piney Woods” in Tyler, Texas on October 16-19, 2014 with a nice video and invited everyone to attend. Jim Hering also invited the crowd to attend the 2015 “Sing a Song of Roses” ARS Combined Spring Convention and Miniature Rose Conference and Rose Show in Columbus Ohio, on June 11-14, 2015.

Following dinner the Hospitality Room was opened again to give attendees one last chance to gather before they went on the garden tours or left to head home. People gathered Sunday morning to board the bus for the garden tour. The first stop was Tom & Rosemarie Mayhew’s beautiful garden in Langhorne, PA. It is set in a slightly wooded area and contains between 700 and 800 roses. The group stayed for about an hour and drinks refreshments were served while they were there. The bus then traveled about 25 minutes to the garden of Bill & Kathy Kozemchak. This sunny garden contains just over 1,000 roses and 750 varieties including many climbers and arbors. Drinks and refreshments were also served there as well as pizza, which seemed very popular.

The conference was a great success thanks to many volunteers from the West Jersey Rose Society and others from around the Penn-Jersey District. This district is blessed with many members who are always willing to help out wherever and whenever they are needed, and this dedication has seemed to encourage new members to do the same. The staff at the Hotel ML also deserves a lot of credit making things run smoothly for the weekend.
