Thomas Theorem and the Matthew Hfed?
The Thomas Theorem and The Matthew Hfed? ROBERT K MERI'ON, Cohmbiu University and Russell Sage Foundation Eponymy in science is the practice of affixing the names of scientists to what they have discovered or are believed to have discovered,’ as with Boyle’s Law, Halley’s comet, Fourier’s transform, Planck’s constant, the Rorschach test, the Gini coefficient, and the Thomas theorem This article can be read from various sociological perspectives? Most specifical- ly, it records an epistolary episode in the sociointellectual history of what has ’ The definition of epw includes the cautionary phrase,“or are belkvedto have discovered,” in order to take due note of “Stigkr’s Law of Eponymy” which in its strongest and “simplest form is this: ‘No scientific discovery is named after its original discovereV (Stigler 1980). Stigler’s study of what is generally known as “the normal distribution” or “the Gaussian distribution” as a case in point of his ixonicaBy self-exemplifyingeponymous law is based in part on its eponymous appearance in 80 textbooks of statistics, from 1816 to 1976. 2 As will become evident, this discursive composite of archival dccuments, biography of a sociological idea, and analysis of social mechanisms involved in the diffusion of that idea departs from the tidy format that has come to be p&bed for the scientific paper. This is by design and with the indulgent consent of the editor of SocialForces. But then, that only speaks for a continuing largeness of spirit of its editorial policy which, back in 1934, allowed the ironic phrase “enlightened Boojum of Positivism” (with its allusion to Lewis Carroll’s immortal The Hunting of the &ark) to appear in my very fist article, published in this journal better than 60 Y- ago. -
A Theological Reading of the Gideon-Abimelech Narrative
YAHWEH vERsus BAALISM A THEOLOGICAL READING OF THE GIDEON-ABIMELECH NARRATIVE WOLFGANG BLUEDORN A thesis submitted to Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Arts & Humanities April 1999 ABSTRACT This study attemptsto describethe contribution of the Abimelech narrative for the theologyof Judges. It is claimedthat the Gideonnarrative and the Abimelechnarrative need to be viewed as one narrative that focuseson the demonstrationof YHWH'S superiority over Baalism, and that the deliverance from the Midianites in the Gideon narrative, Abimelech's kingship, and the theme of retribution in the Abimelech narrative serve as the tangible matter by which the abstracttheological theme becomesnarratable. The introduction to the Gideon narrative, which focuses on Israel's idolatry in a previously unparalleled way in Judges, anticipates a theological narrative to demonstrate that YHWH is god. YHwH's prophet defines the general theological background and theme for the narrative by accusing Israel of having abandonedYHwH despite his deeds in their history and having worshipped foreign gods instead. YHWH calls Gideon to demolish the idolatrous objects of Baalism in response, so that Baalism becomes an example of any idolatrous cult. Joash as the representativeof Baalism specifies the defined theme by proposing that whichever god demonstrateshis divine power shall be recognised as god. The following episodesof the battle against the Midianites contrast Gideon's inadequateresources with his selfish attempt to be honoured for the victory, assignthe victory to YHWH,who remains in control and who thus demonstrateshis divine power, and show that Baal is not presentin the narrative. -
Charismatic 1996 Ch H, Summer Squall – Bali Babe (Drone)
Old Friends Charismatic 1996 ch h, Summer Squall – Bali Babe (Drone) 1999 1999 Kentucky Horse Derby o f the Winner Year When Charismatic started in the 1999 Lexington Stakes (G2), few at Keeneland imagined a colt whose only wins were in two claiming races had a chance. He and Jerry Bailey surprised the crowd with a strong outside move that left the rest behind. When trainer D. Wayne Lukas brought the big chestnut colt to Louisville, even fewer figured him for a Kentucky Derby winner. He went off at odds of 31.30. Riding him for the first time, Chris Antley kept clear of the jostling pack, and when asked in midstretch, Charismatic answered with his powerful outside run, giving owners Bob and Beverly Lewis their second Derby in three years, following Silver Charm’s in 1997. Even so, Charismatic wasn’t favored in the Preakness. But again he gave Antley what had become his signature move, a confident, commanding run from outside the mid- pack, proving beyond doubt that he was the best three year old in America. Now the colt who’d twice been offered for a claiming tag and the jockey who’d battled drugs and weight captured people’s love for underdogs who beat the odds. But the try for the Triple Crown finished in a career-ending injury. Antley’s quick action, and the care provided by the Lewis family, enabled Charismatic to heal. In his 17 starts Charismatic achieved 5 wins, 2 seconds, 4 thirds for $2,038,064. At Lane’s End Farm he sired Sun King before moving to JBBA’s Shizunai Stallion Station in Japan. -

Will Justify Win the Triple Crown?
Will there be a Triple Crown Winner this year? Mike E. Smith on Justify, Kentucky Derby On May 5, Justify won the Kentucky Derby. There are 2 more thoroughbred horse races that he has to enter and win in order to win the Triple Crown of thoroughbred Racing ... the Preakness and the Belmont. Can he do it? What are his chances? The three races that make up the Triple Crown are the (1) Kentucky Derby, the (2) Preakness Stakes, and the (3) Belmont Stakes. Kentucky Derby races began in 1875; Preakness races began in 1870; and the Belmont began in 1867. But in all of those years since these races began only 12 horses have won all three. Triple Crown winners Year Winner Jockey 2015 American Pharoah Victor Espinoza 1978 Affirmed Steve Cauthen 1977 Seattle Slew Jean Cruguet 1973 Secretariat Ron Turcotte 1948 Citation Eddie Arcaro 1946 Assault Warren Mehrtens 1943 Count Fleet Johnny Longden 1941 Whirlaway Eddie Arcaro 1937 War Admiral Charles Kurtsinger 1935 Omaha Willie "Smokey" Saunders 1930 Gallant Fox Earl Sande 1919 Sir Barton Johnny Loftus Even though all three races have been in existence since 1875, let's start considering our data when the first horse won all three races in 1919 ... Sir Barton won. 1. How many years have elapsed between 1919 and now? There are different ways to look at what might be the most usual gap between winners. We could figure out the gap that occurs most often (mode); or what the mean number of years of a gap is; or what is the most central measurement (median) of the various gaps. -

American Sociology and the Genealogy of its Missing Women on Wikipedia Wei Luo, Julia Adams and Hannah Brueckner “People just don't vanish and so forth.” “But she has.” “What?” “Vanished.” “Who?” “The old dame.” … “But how could she?” “What?” “Vanish.” “I don't know.” “That just explains my point. People just don't disappear into thin air.” --- Alfred Hitchcock, The Lady Vanishes (1938)1 INTRODUCTION In comparison to many academic disciplines, sociology has been relatively open to women since its founding, and seems increasingly so. Yet many notable female sociologists are missing from the public history of American sociology, both print and digital. The rise of crowd- sourced digital sources, particularly the largest and most influential, Wikipedia, seems to promise a new and more welcoming approach. -

On the micro level, conflict generates conditions for intense interaction rituals, and internal solidarity fuels external conflict. Perceived atrocities reciprocally increase ideological polarization between opponents, while confrontational tension/fear makes violence incompetent and produces real atrocities. Conflict groups seek allies, drive out neutrals, and mobilize material resources. -
