24 25 26 Concert in Toulouse S 27 S 28 29 30

A WORD Before moving to Toulouse I always associated June AIT Escambi with the beginning of summer with its high temperatures and long daylight hours, a time of lots of weddings and Father's Day. Since moving to France, though, I've come more and more to Tuesday, June 16th associate June with music. 18h30-22h00 To coincide with the end of the school year and right at before most people will leave on long summer holidays, most community musical groups plan end- “ C’EZ SAVOY“ of-season concerts in June, along with lots of professional offerings. There's even a national day restaurant dedicated to music on June 21st called “Fête de la 9, rue Clémence Isaure, Toulouse, Musique” which is often translated as “Make Music Day” because of a pun with “fête” (party/holiday) near place de la Bourse and “faites” (make) and the fact that amateur music right near the metro/parking performance is so strongly encouraged on this day. If Esquirol you've never wandered around downtown Toulouse (or any other significant French city) on the evening -MAP- of June 21st, I highly recommend it--unless you're uncomfortable with crowds. There are musicians of Lots of fun drinks and all sorts playing music of all styles, amateur and snacks in an authentic professional, for free throughout the city. Cajun style atmosphere! There's also a wonderful Baroque concert on the 19th in Léguevin and the 26th in Toulouse this year that I RSVP not required and we can't recommend enough. More details on page 6. welcome all friends of AIT

So find some music you like and make sure the A/C is working so you can “stay cool” in every sense all month long.

Private Walks With Elyse

If you have ever enjoyed a walk with Elyse, you will know that they are events that stick with you for years. I took a tour with her when my parents visited 9 years ago and I still retell her stories about Toulouse to anyone who listens.

Did you know that Elyse offers private tours? If you have family or friends visiting for the summer, or just want to learn more about your adopted city, you can book a walk around Toulouse.

“Ponds, Peacocks and Puzzles' - the history of public parks in Toulouse!” Thursday June 11th, 10 am to 12:30 – with coffee break Exit Metro line B François Verdier 20 euros per adult, 50 euros for three people

Toulouse is always so lovely in the months leading up to summertime; and what better a way of enjoying the city than by strolling through its gardens, taking in the greenery, the statuary and the lovely sprays of water coming off the fountains. Did you know that Toulouse, that medieval walled city, was one of the first in France to create public garden spaces open to all? Did you know also that we have a “royal” garden here, just as we were supposed to have a “royal square”! But where is the king? Our gardens, are surprisingly, not French ones, but English gardens, and the story of how that came about it fascinating. (And what is the difference anyway?) Do you know that Toulouse has a large collection of sculpture in its gardens, from some of its most illustrious artists? Why is the Grand Rond referred to by old timers as the Bolengrin (sounds like the name of an opera, but it isnt)? Sitting in the Grand Rond we can almost expect to see gentlement in their bowlers strolling by! Come and join me for this lovely, mostly bucolic, and informative walk through our oldest green spaces. Ponds, peacocks and puzzles await you as we follow the path of the old medieval walls that take us to the Grand Rond the Royal Gardens, and the wonderful and immensely interesting Jardin des Plantes! Contact me to reserve a spot - bring your cameras with you and prepare to have a real feast for the eyes!! Write to Elyse at [email protected] to confirm your participation in this walk.

***For three people booking together the rate is 50 euros.

“Water and Wine' Secrets of the Canal – its water and its wines! When: Tuesday, June 23 Where: Corner of Allées François Verdier and the Grand Rond (line b) Time: 10h to 12h30 Fee: 25 euros (walk and wine tasting)

What a wonderful way to spend a summer morning in June! Take a walk along the Canal du Midi and find out where and how the Canal was used as part of the commerce that made Toulouse so wealthy starting in the 17th century. Did you know that the center of Toulouse was a major distribution point for wine and that the Canal had barges filled with barrels? The lively waterway was used as a commercial port until mid way into the 20th century. Come with me and see some of the lovely riverboat homes and the strange structures that are vestiges of the “old” ways on the Canal. From the lovely shaded section of the Canal to the commercial port there are stories to tell and some lovely things to see, not the least of which is the strange fantasy of the Labit museum! And, after working up a nice thirst, come and join me for a wonderful WINE TASTING at the most complete and expert cavist in Toulouse, which, imagine, is also along the Canal!! We will have the chance to taste 4 different wines and hear the expert talk about their choices – some good wines for the summer will be waiting for you there!***

***Please note, this is a pre-paid visit as we must have a minimum of 10 participants for the wine tasting to happen. So make your reservations now and come and join me for this great Water and Wine Walk. Contact Elyse at [email protected] to reserve your spot now or leave a message on the Facebook page Elyse Rivin, or send a message to www.toulouseguidedwalks.com Hope to see you all there – I'll drink to that!!!!

CALLING ALL SINGERS. Are you a male? Have you had any musical experience in singing? Can you just carry a tune? Maybe your just the new "American Idol" in your shower? Looking to try something new? I'm looking for you.

I'd like to start a barbershop quartet in France and since a quartet is made of 4 men and I'm only 1, I need three others. A barbershop quartet is made up of a bass, a baritone with a good range, a lead or a tenor II for the melody and a high tenor that almost always sings in falsetto. If you're interested, give me a holler. I'll let you in on the details and we can see if it's right for you.

CONCERT For a wonderful local cultural experience, I strongly recommend my friends' concerts in the Léguevin church on June 19th and at the Montaudran church in Toulouse on June 26th, both at 8:30 pm. Any of you who have heard my octet Octambule will recognize Marie-Laure and Lise and their fantastic voices already. They will be performing Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater," Purcell's "Music for a While" and "Agnus Dei" from Bach's Mass in B with a string quartet, organ and spinet. Their concert in L'Union last month got rave reviews, and I myself will be attending the one on the 19th in Léguevin. Hope to see some of you there!
